For the past week or so, Jonah and I have been debating the idea of moving. We love our apartment in East L.A., but after Cupcakes and Cashmere moves to our new office (!!), Jonah and my offices will be just a block from each other! The bad news is: Our commute will be 45 minutes—nothing crazy by L.A. standards, but Jonah's been doing it for about two years now, and it's definitely far from ideal. Last week, I posed this question to Instagram: Should we stay in the apartment and neighborhood we love, or move to a one we aren't as crazy about, to be walking distance from our offices? The comments were split nearly 50/50. Jonah's seeing two apartments today that look promising, but we still aren't sure if we'll make the jump. I guess only time will tell! Side note: I can't wait for you all to see photos of the new office. Here's what I'm loving this week:
There's a scene in Big Little Lies where Jane's (Shailene Woodley) boyfriend interrogates a waiter when ordering fish at a restaurant. Is it wild caught? Is it line caught? Is it freshwater? The scene is meant to convey his nerdiness and dedication to sustainability, and part of me wanted to shout, "Dude, just order the fish" (possibly because I was projecting—at $4, I don't think the chicken I was eating led a fruitful life before it reached my plate). But the longer I thought about it, the more I realized: We should all be obnoxious like Corey when it comes to knowing where our food is from. To be clear: I'm not nearly at his level. I buy wild salmon and organic whenever possible, but have never once asked a waiter about "indoor recirculating tanks." After a quick Google, I came across this incredibly helpful guide (from the aquarium Corey works at in the show, go figure!). You can search for fish, or view a list of their recommended seafood—I just downloaded the app for my next grocery stop!
On a weekend trip to Santa Barbara this weekend, my friend took me to what she described as "the best bakery in the world" and it didn't disappoint—we purchased the last available loaf at OAT, a sour dough with Kalamatta olives. It was so delicious, we ate it on the drive back to her apartment (which is about a minute...). In the bakery, we met two women from L.A. who told us they do they two-hour drive every month just to stock-up on bread from OAT which they eat every morning for breakfast with the super-crunchy nut butter, Nuttzo. You all know how I feel about nut butter (and my dedication to Wild Friends), but I may have to give Nuttzo a try if it's anywhere near as delicious as OAT's bread was. P.S., If you live in L.A., my favorite bakery here is Bub and Grandma's, available at the Hollywood Farmers Market.
Earlier this week, Jonah's mom watched the Icelandic film Woman at War on a flight. She was so enthusiastic about it, we spent half an hour talking about it, before I remembered to ask her about the trip itself! Last night, Jonah and I sat down to watch it (it's available to stream on Hulu) and loved it. It's incredibly unique, about an environmentalist who declares a one-person war on the aluminum industry in Iceland. Watch it here, or rent it on Amazon.
Jess is the one who first told me about The Rewatchables Podcast a few months ago, after she'd listened to the episode about "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." The way she sold it to me, as a smart, binge-able podcast about all the movies you could watch on repeat, actually didn't initially appeal to me—why listen to a podcast instead of watching the actual movies? I finally dove into it this weekend, listening to their episode on "Inglorious Basterds" on our two-hour drive to Santa Barbara. Of course I shouldn't have doubted Jess—it was so much more entertaining than I thought it would be, and has reminded me of the number of movies I really do need to rewatch. Listen here!
