The List: I Can't Believe I Only Just Learned About This Ingredient

Plus shrimp, grits, and best friend movies on Netflix.

Hello from Charleston! Technically, as I'm writing this, it's Thursday evening and I'm sitting at my kitchen nook while I wait for my first attempt at grits to cook (What can I say? I'm feeling inspired!). But by the time you read this, I'll have eaten sticky buns at WildFlour Pastry and dinner at The Darling Oyster Bar, gone on a ghost tour (!), and hopefully had my first-ever shrimp and grits and she-crab soup. I have a feeling I'm going to be very full and very happy. I'll be popping up on @shopcupcakesandcashmere's Instagram a few times while I'm there to share some of my favorite finds with you (including lunch at the number one place you all recommended to me! Can you guess where I'm headed?). Until then, here are some things I'm loving this week:

I know we're all still not over Taylor's latest release (#Kaylor theories and all), but allow me to draw your attention to Lizzo's new catchy-as-hell, soul-pop album, Cuz I Love You. For me, it was love at first song, then only grew deeper from there with her body positivity lyrics in Juice, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, don't say it cuz I'm cute!" I've been listening to it on repeat, only pausing so I can listen to Jade Bird's new album. Enjoy!

Lately there's been an influx of movies on Netflix that celebrate female friendships, and I am here for it. Last week, I watched Someone Great, which in addition to a beyond-lovable cast led by Gina Rodriguez, is a perfect addition to the "Girls' Night Out" genre (joining Girls' Trip and Bridesmaids). It's funny, loveable, and the message isn't "love is all you need," but "friends are all you need" which is something I can totally get behind. Other recent BFFs movies I'm loving include the quirky Breaker Upperers, Amy Poehler's Wine Country (out everywhere May 10), and the teenage dram-edy Dumplin. If you're looking for a series, try The Bold Type on Hulu. And if you haven't gotten your fix of badass women, consider the documentary Knock Down the House about the women who challenged big-money politicians for Congress in 2018.

Speaking of badass women... I recently came across a fund-raising site that functions like Kickstarter, but is for women-led projects! You can support female fire fighters in New York, this cheese grotto maker (I actually own one and love it), and a small local yoga studio, or even start your own here! There aren't a ton of campaigns yet, but I hope it takes off. Who run the world? Girls!

Has date syrup been around forever, or am I just the last person to find out about it? Either way, it's genius and I'm so happy to finally have it in my life. The concept is super simple. My healthiest friend (also a certified nutritionist) is always telling me to use dates as a sweetener, but then I slurp a slimy chunk up halfway through my smoothie and swear them off for another few weeks. The syrup version allows me to sweeten things, without the choking hazard. I've been using this Date Lady Syrup anywhere I'd use honey, on yogurt, in salad dressings (similar to pomegranate molasses), over carrots before roasting them, in oatmeal, by the spoonful... it's that good.
