Chiara Totire traded in her lab coat for a sleek black trench when she dropped everything and moved from her hometown, Bari, Italy, to Milan to pursue a career in fashion. Moving to a fashion capital like Milan was a natural first step to break into the fashion industry, and now Totire's a stylist at Vogue Japan, working alongside fashion icon Anna dello Russo. Her minimalist, rockstar style has caught the attention of Coveteur and All the Pretty Birds, not to mention us! Here are some of our favorite looks from this Italian it-girl:
When we're having trouble deciding on what to wear, we usually opt for neutrals—black, white, navy, or tan. But Totire shows us that neutral doesn't have to be boring, it's just about picking the right pieces that have compelling details. Rather than a solid black boot or skirt, Totire's are two-toned. And forget the classic black sweater—Totire goes bold.
While we've previously reserved matching sets for Grandma, Totire makes a convincing argument for raiding her closet. A set has the ease of a jumpsuit, but with an added benefit: If you don't feel like being matchy-matchy, you can break it up. To achieve a completely different look, Totire could pair her lettered skirt (bottom-left image) with a plain black tee—but that wouldn't be nearly as fun.
Consider this permission to wear black and navy together. Totire pairs a navy blue sweater with black leather pants and a gray scarf in a perfect, neutral ensemble. She also layers a tan outfit with a black sweater and black pumps. Even though the all-black-everything outfit is trending right now, there's something cool and refreshing about an outfit that mixes a variety of neutral colors.
Whether you're wearing a big, black hat because you're heading to brunch in Silver Lake or to tame a bad hair day, we can all agree on one thing: they're in. And don't be fooled, this trend isn't just for winter—summer straw can be found in black, too.
The sky's the limit when it comes to tennis shoes, and we aren't complaining. We love how Totire styles them in outfits that would normally call for sandals, heels, or boots.
Everything in balance: Aside from embracing all-neutral outfits, Totire also sports playful jackets and vests that add variety to her wardrobe. Often her layers make the outfit feel complete—each one adds something unique to her look.
