When we published this post in March, our team was eager to begin addressing important topics and speaking to experts and new voices about everything from environmental issues to women’s rights, to institutionalized racism—and then the pandemic hit. When we took the pulse of how you were all feeling in the immediate wake of coronavirus and sheltering in place—through Instagram questions, polls, and conversations in our Facebook group—the majority of you asked that we focus on levity. But recently, the energy has shifted.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen your comments and DMs asking us to approach these subjects, and we’ve been ready as well and are on the same page. We’re here to dive in, with you leading the conversation. It’s never going to be a perfect time to discuss these topics, but we’re realizing that we can’t simply wait. So we’re here to fulfill the promise we made to you in March.
In light of current events, and most recently the killing of George Floyd, it’s clear that the first topic you want addressed is racism: what it’s like to be a marginalized minority and person of color in America right now, and how to avoid being part of the systemic problem.
We’ve been so scared to mess up, but that’s not a reason to not talk about these things. We are going to make mistakes along the way, and encourage and invite you to offer feedback as we go so that we can do better. These subjects are important to us, so we’re providing the platform, but we want you to drive the conversation. Who are the experts you want to hear from? What can we, as a community, do to be a part of the solution? And we want you to let us know the format that will resonate most—is it long-form essays, interviews, a list of resources, video?
Your part: Emailing us, DMing us on @emilyschuman and @shopcupcakesandcashmere, replying to us in comments, responding to our Stories and polls, and sharing resources, experts, and thoughts with us at any time.
Our part: Casting our net far and wide, listening to and acting on your feedback, and sharing our process with you along the way.
We hear you and we’re ready to start facilitating this conversation. Recipes, interior design, and ear parties aren’t going anywhere, but we look forward to incorporating new topics into our content that we hope will continue to elevate your everyday life. This is only the first topic we’ll be talking about—thank you for being a part of this learning process and helping lead the conversation.
