How I Get Ready for a Weekday Morning With Sloan

And the simple way we connect each day.

G and I trade-off each morning with who is helping Sloan get ready for school so that the other can sleep in, workout, or just have a leisurely morning to themselves. On mornings when I'm helping Sloan, I get up around six. The first thing I do is splash water on my face, and put on my Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance SerumCaudalie Vinosource SOS Intense Moisturizing CreamEve Lom Radiance Antioxidant Eye Cream, and Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40. (P.S., I'm still in the market for a Retinol! Any tips for brands you love that don't make you red, irritated, and dry by the next morning?)

I used to brush my teeth after I had my coffee (I use this toothpastetoothbrush, and floss), but I have a four-year-old who now knows about things like morning breath, and calls me out on it, which is lovely.

Often, she's already eaten breakfast: Kix, which we set up for her the evening before in this bowl. A reader also recently told me about this mini milk jug, which we're planning on buying her since a quart of milk is still too heavy for her when it's on the fuller side.

G and I take turns making each other coffee, as a little Act of Service (his main love language). This morning, G had already made mine. I used to take my coffee the same way for years, with a splash of whole milk, but I now use Laird Superfood Creamer and I'm back using Collagen Peptides. I stopped using collagen powder because I felt like I could taste it slightly in my coffee, and it's just one additional step, but when I'd been using it consistently a while ago, people asked me all the time what I was doing with my skin, so I'm trying to add it back into my routine!

While I'm getting ready in the morning, I fill up my water tumbler (with reusable straw), which has been a game-changer. Whenever I would get a single-use plastic cup and straw from a restaurant, I found that I drank so much more water that I would often keep the "single-use" cup for about a hundred more uses until it eventually disintegrated (or got mistaken for trash and recycled). I finally bought a reusable insulated tumbler with a straw for the office, then another one for home. It's amazing how much more water I've been drinking.

While Sloan gets dressed (she now selects what she wears every day), I make her lunch (usually a whole-wheat English muffin with cream cheese, dried pea crisps, dried blueberries, and cucumbers in this bento box). I added in a granola bar and some raspberries this morning, in case she's especially hungry.

Sloan also tells me how she'd like to do her hair each morning—sometimes entirely in her face, other days in braids (like she requested this morning). I finished it with a glittery spray from Dry Bar (similar here).

Once she's totally set, I spend a few minutes getting ready by myself (getting dressed and putting on makeup), while she entertains herself by reading, coloring, or playing a game. While doing my makeup, I'm usually filming a tutorial, listening to a podcast, or talking on the phone with my mom (as I did today!). This morning, I threw on a James Perse white teeAGOLDE cut-offs, Cupcakes and Cashmere slides, and a blazer from The Fifth Label

P.S. For those of you asking, my go-to foundation is Clé de Peau's The Foundation. It's definitely a splurge, but I think it completely transforms the way my makeup looks!

I don't know if this happens to any other moms (I have a feeling it does!), but when I ask Sloan about her day, over dinner or after school, she simply says, "Good." Lately, we've been playing Candy Land several times a day, in the morning and evening. It's such a sweet time for us to connect, and she always opens up more about what's actually going on in her life—who she sat next to at school, what she learned, what her friends are up to. It's also a nice way for her to learn how to be a good sport and not be upset if she loses.

After a few games, we fly out the door and listen to Lion King the whole way to school, before I head into the office and start my workday!
