Sweet Lady Jane is one of the best spots for dessert in L.A. and my favorite treat they make is their triple berry shortcake. It has three tiers of yellow cake with a different berry tucked inside each whipped cream layer (I used strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries). It's surprisingly light and fluffy and the ideal thing to make for a summer barbecue. I didn't use a recipe, but simply used a box mix for the cake and topped it off with homemade whipped cream frosting (recipe here).
