I wasn't always a burger fan. Outside of the occasional double-double to commemorate a road trip, I rarely ate them—until I discovered Ashley Rodriguez's burger sauce. The day was August 26th, 2015 (I know because I left a hyper-enthusiastic comment the next morning on her recipe), and I remember sitting with Jonah on our fire escape, spooning more sauce onto every bite. After finishing our burgers, we looked at each other and knew instantly we had to fry up two more. They were just that good! The recipe was simple, but the combination of mayonnaise, relish, mustard, garlic, ketchup, soy sauce, and honey, was a revelation. Imagine In N' Out's secret sauce, or a traditional Thousand Island dressing, but so much better—with more flavor, a better balance, and fresher.

Back then, I favored a freshly ground burger with 80/20 ratio of meat to fat (it makes all the difference, and don't smash your burgers! It only pushes the fat out of them), but these days I skip the beef in favor of a Beyond Burger or vegetable-blended veggie burger. The sauce takes about a minute to make—I just add the ingredients to a Mason jar, then shake it, and make sure to serve extra alongside the burger since I'll inevitably spoon more on as I eat it. While we rarely eat two burgers in a row, we always buy enough patties and buns to give us the option, just in case... Here's the full recipe*, and a link to Ashley's blog, Not Without Salt, and cookbook Date Night Tonight, which I still reference all the time!

Ingredients:

1/3 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons dill relish
2 teaspoons yellow mustard
1 garlic clove
2 tablespoons ketchup
1/2 teaspoon soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon honey

**Ashley's recipe includes a cheese sauce, but I find that the secret sauce, with lettuce, tomato, raw onion, and a slab of cheddar cheese melted onto the burger between toasted buns is all I need!
