Owning a new home provides the opportunity to start new traditions and after several years of hosting an annual Halloween party, I felt like making a slight change this season. I still want to celebrate the holiday, but this year I'm inviting a small group over to enjoy a build-your-own soup bar, while we pass out candy. I've featured this Rick Bayless Sopa Azteca recipe before and it's the perfect base for layering on your favorite toppings and also makes for a nice complement to classic quesadillas. It's definitely going to be a more subdued celebration, but there's something about an intimate and cozy setting that's so appealing (plus it will be a great way to kick off the evening before taking our little one trick-or-treating in years to come).
