Fashion director and stylist Viviana Volpicella is hard to miss. Her bright and bold prints, brilliant smile, and funky accessories dominate every fashion month—thanks, in part, to the fun-loving vibe she exudes at shows and events notorious for taking themselves too seriously. Born in the Italian port town, Bari, she now works as a fashion stylist with the agency Close Up Milano, creating editorials that are as full of life as she is. Here are some of our favorite looks:
Volpicella's breezy layers make us want to over-haul our closets immediately, and trade in neutral layers for colorful hues. Until then, we'll be investing in an affordable, but often overlooked accessory: a bright red handkerchief. We love how she ties it around her neck to add a bright detail to a neutral sweater or create a focal point of a breezy dress.
At fall shows, you can often find Volpicella in an ankle-skimming or long coat that's just as much a part of the outfit as whatever underneath is. While she favors bold coats and vests, she's careful not to wear anything that would overpower her outfit—just look at her neutral brown layer in the top right.
Volpicella has said that her entire world is tropical: "For me it's summer year-round." It only makes sense then that she looks so natural and vibrant in playful patterns inspired by fruits, flowers, and foliage. We particularly love the way she matches different but complementary patterns in the top center image to create a daring outfit that somehow works.
Wearing too much animal print is often considered a fashion faux pas—but not when Volpicella does it. We love how she limits her animal prints to one piece to create a striking, but completely replicable outfit. We also have her to thank for showing us how well neon orange pairs with cheetah print.
Of all the trends Volpicella embraces, this is probably our favorite. We love how no matter the shape—pencil, A-line, mini—no color is too bright or too bold (just look at that skirt in the bottom-center!). Balanced with a matching or neutral-colored top, like a black or white blouse or a navy sweater, the skirts exude a warmth and vibrancy that isn't overwhelming.
Consider this a PSA from Volpicella: Never stop playing dress-up with jewelry. In searching for photos of her, we rarely found her without some kind of playful adornment on her wrist—chunky chain bracelets in a multitude of colors, hearts and stars, beaded cuffs. They add a fun touch to even the most lively of outfits.
