Mascara is one of those beauty products I feel like every woman has a favorite of. Not every girl I know wears red lipstick, or foundation, but I don't know any who don't have a mascara she loves and swears by. So, I decided to poll my friends for their faves, and try them out for size.
The Friend: Brooke Stites
The Mascara: Diorshow Iconic Overcurl
What She Said: With mascara, two things are important for me: coverage and stamina. My lashes are blonde from root to tip so they need full coverage in order to actually notice my eyes. I really like the fat brush of the Dior wand - it holds a lot of mascara so I can cover all of my lashes with one dip in the tube. I also like the dexterity I have with the curve of the brush. As for stamina, I’ve tried a lot of mascaras and have found that with most of them, the mascara has flaked off my lashes by late afternoon. With Dior, my mascara holds up all day and my lashes look as good at the end of the day as when I leave the house in the morning; no flaking. Bonus is that it washes off with my cleanser without too much rubbing and no tugging at my lashes.
My Take: I'd heard so many rave reviews about this particular mascara that I was surprised that I didn't love it. The big brush really gripped my lashes well and it was nice that the majority of them were coated in one stroke. I felt like my lashes looked thick, but not long, which is something I always look for since mine are on the shorter side.

The Mascara: Kevyn Aucoin The Volume Mascara
What She Said: My love for the Kevyn Aucoin Volume Mascara rests on the sole fact that it requires zero make-up remover. All it takes is a bit of warm water and the tubes slip off each lash with ease. The only downside is that I have mistaken the residual black tangled tubes left in my sink as spiders on many occasions. But seriously, this mascara is almost to good to be true. It provides crazy length while keeping a natural thickness. My only beef is that they don't make it in brown.
My Take: I've used this mascara on and off for years and it's still one of my favorites. The small wand is easy to manage and really helps separate all of my lashes. And, like Cristina mentioned, the fact that it washes off with just regular face wash (and no extra swipes of eye makeup remover), is a major plus when I'm exhausted at night.
The Friend: Jenny Greenwald
The Mascara: LashBlast Volume by CoverGirl (the regular, not the waterproof).
What She Said: I've used this mascara for ten years (something I can't say about any other product I use). It gives me crazy-long, defined (never-clumpy), Snuffleupagus eyelashes. It stays put during the day (no raccoon eyes), but it washes off with my face wash (no scrubbing, additional makeup remover, or soaking necessary). The black/brown color is perfect for daytime. And I'm into the punchy orange packaging.
My Take: I liked the big brush that really grabbed the base of my lashes and didn't clump. I was really happy with how natural my eyelashes looked, but didn't love how many coats it took in order to deposit a good amount of mascara.

The Mascara: Benefit They're Real Mascara
What I Said: I first started using this mascara a while ago after I saw a friend wearing it and assumed she was wearing falsies. I like how it thoroughly coats all my lashes, makes them look really pigmented and long. The brush also ensures that it never clumps.
My (New) Take: After trying on and then removing four other mascaras, it's possible that my eye was simply a bit sensitive. But once I applied this mascara, I found the brush to be a bit too pointy/aggressive with its little spikes. And while I still like the rich pigmentation, it simply didn't curl and lengthen the way I'd hoped for.
The Friend: Alina Gonzalez
The Mascara: Too Faced Better Than Sex
What She Said: I wrote about this mascara in great depth in my beauty bag post, but to reiterate here: it stays wet (my old favorite, DiorShow, was the bomb but dried out so fast), makes lashes one billion times longer (scientific fact), and also somehow looks natural. I wear it every day.
My Take: When I first looked at the wand, I thought it was going to deposit way too much mascara - it just intimidated me. But I was really pleasantly surprised - it went on smoothly, coated every lash and made them deeply pigmented, thick, but still flirty and feathery.
Final verdict: My favorite was Alina's Too Faced 'Better Than Sex' mascara. While the others had specific things they did best, this one combined them all into one crazy-perfect formula. I've always felt like mascaras never quite coated the base of my lashes well (which made them not look quite as long and dark) and this one really gets in there with the hourglass-shaped brush. I thought I'd be a little more loyal to my two old favorites, but as soon as I tried the Too Faced mascara, they were as good as dead - I slipped that little pink tube right into my make-up bag and now look forward to applying it every morning.
