How to Do My Hair Stylist's Signature Messy Waves

A step-by-step video for a sexy, undone look.

When it comes to blow-outs, I have my technique for a sleek look down to a science, but have always struggled with consistent beachy waves. While I used to prefer a sleeker wave (see this 2013 video), I've found myself gravitating towards a more undone look in recent years, which my hair stylist Donovan at Ramirez | Tran salon is an expert at. His signature messy waves are voluminous and have just the right amount of a tousled look while still feeling intentional. Without fail, any time I shoot an outfit post or take an Instagram after visiting Donovan, I'm flooded with comments about how I got such a perfect beachy, messy wave. After years of visiting him, I asked him to share with you how to achieve his signature messy waves. (Full disclosure: This is for me as much as it is for you—I can't wait to replicate this at home!) Watch the video here, then scroll down for the products Donovan used:
