Work in Progress
After I started working from home, I realized that I needed to transform my desk into a fully functioning office space. I made drastic improvements last year (see my original desk here), but since the area is so small, I needed to relocate any unnecessary items (namely my vintage globe and phone). Here are the simple steps I took to ensure that my work space is clean, pretty and most importantly, inspiring.
{These file folders are aesthetically pleasing and functional}
{I now have room for current magazines, a paper weight and my notepad}
{For a fun, rustic touch I made bows out of raffia}
{I treat myself to bright flowers and keep plenty of pictures nearby}
{I spray painted an old chalkboard white and added ribbon to my lamp}
{There’s something so nostalgic about classic, #2 pencils}

I like the filing station’s and your paperweight!

I loved your desk makeover the last time around, but it keeps getting better! There’s no use trying to maintain a pretty space that’s less than functional, so I’m sure those file folders are coming in handy. Personally, I’m a couch worker, and it’s terrible for my posture. Oh, lap top hunch! I gave up on using my desk–it’s gone from desk to house plant stand. It’s literally covered in terra cotta pots, a lamp and old photos. Oh well.

very cozy. I just love it

looks great. living in nyc i’m always trying to rearrange my desk, bedside table, kitchen, basically everything under my roof to figure out the best use of space. when i moved into this apartment i was really stumped. i headed over to the flea market and got these great pieces (http://www.lovelifeandlollipops.com/2010/04/flea-market-finds/) which helped hugely, but i think they need a little reorganizing!).

I love your desk Emily! I really need to get my own desk for my apartment. I’m currently working off my kitchen table and I really don’t like all the clutter! I love the chalk board too, I think that’s a must have for people who love making lists! (myself included)
The chalkboard is my favorite part! I dream of having a large one in my kitchen someday.

So adorable Emily! I think you did a lovely job, especially working mostly with what you had before and doing small changes for little cost, like the ribbon and raffia. And you’re too cute with your #2 pencils! I work from home too, you’re inspiring me to do a post on my work space, maybe soon. Thank you for the pretty look into your life, love the ideas!

those desktop files are great. i’ve got to pick up some.
I have that desk! Isn’t it great? We just moved my office into the den, out of necessity (Devon needs a bigger space and my old office was adjacent to our family room). I am currently making it work and will update with pics when it’s finally finished. VERY nicely done…love the ribbon on the lamp!
The whiteboard is just darling! Also, fresh flowers always make me feel like I’m getting a bit of the outdoors even when I’m cooped up indoors. Beautiful to look at, as always

I love your office space! Ever since a couple of years ago, I have had mine all planned out. I want a big oak desk with 1 drawer in the middle like yours. I have been making over my desk, too, so as to make it “graduate school ready.” It’s a challenge to make it uncluttered and clean, yet still aesthetically pleasing and feeling like me. What a good example we have here! Looks very Emily.
I love love love all the little details of your new work table esp the chalkboard and the file folder!!
That file system is amazing! My boyfriend wants me to get rid of my ugly metal cabinet, so maybe this is the perfect alternative!

Your office space looks so cheerful and inviting Emily! I love seeing the transformation from your old brown desk (with the Dell laptop!) to what it is now. The Parsons desk has always really appealed to me too.

Loving this new work space!! What kind of flowers are these? I love them!
wow it looks gorgeous!

there are flowers and pencils.
hey! the workspace is so functional and pretty! Just wondering though, what do you do with all of your old magazines? I can’t get myself to toss them! Any suggestions?
Okay, you’re NOT allowed to be so cute anymore.
Love this! As a professional organizer, I know how important it is to have a functional yet beautiful workspace. The Parson’s desk by West Elm is an inexpensive way to glam up a space, while the brocade file boxes from The Container Store, effortlessly dress up what would otherwise be something to try and hide – ugly files. Kudos!
Love what you’ve done. So inspiring. And for Jean regarding old magazines – I can never toss them either! I started to use them rolled up to keep my boots standing straight and perfectly molded in my closet. It’s great for the toss-away ones, the collectors you probably don’t want smelling like shoes though.
PS – LOVE the file folders so much!!

It seems like nothing in your life goes untouched…everything is so stylish! Those flowers are gorgeous & I love those file folders (love The Container Store)! And I have a whiteboard but the chalkboard is cuter. Lastly, yay for the MacBook!
