Words of Wisdom
This morning I’m scheduled to have all four of my wisdom teeth removed. Please cross your fingers that I won’t end up resembling this little guy come Monday morning.
Luckily, my nest is made (i.e. every single blanket and pillow we own has been crammed to form a little cocoon for me on the couch), I’ve rented a bunch of 80′s movies and there are roughly 9 varieties of popsicles in the freezer. Since I’m sure I’ll get sick of shoveling pudding pretty quickly, I’d love any suggestions for other soft and yummy things I can eat.

No! Oh my God, you’ve got my moral support! It will be fine, but thank God for meds, right?
I remember when I got 3 taken out. I ate nothing but ice-cream, pudding and yogurt for an entire week. It was heaven. (: good luck!
I had all 4 of mine taken out last year! Its not that bad honest! The only annoying thing was that when you wake up they try and make you eat! What a stupid idea! Arnica gel works for the swelling! xoxox
I had one of mine removed two months ago, it went fine, just took a pain killer after those two hours when you’re not allowed to drink and ate ice cream that day.
You poor thing Emily but I promise it’s not as bad as everyone makes out. I got 3 taken out last year and there was no bruising or swelling and very little pain after the first day. I found that cold rice pudding and cold custard were really good, along with yogurt. Just as long as your food is soft and cold you’ll be fine. Hugs and lots more hugs.
Pop a few Advil prior to the surgery (helps with the swelling)….and Cream of Wheat is one of those iconic comfort foods perfect for the unglamorous occasion. I remember waking up and the oral surgeon saying, “OK, were all done!” Didn’t feel a thing-no swelling and I was shopping for shoes that afternoon. But, hey, milk it for all it’s worth
Wow, what a perfect moment you have captured. Very cute!
my boyfriend had his out under general a couple of months ago and then spent 2 days high on the painkillers they gave him! from my observations he was having a lovely time!! although i havent had mine out but they do hurt and i find that the popsicles that are a mixture of ice and icecream are the best for soothing the pain…plus they taste yummy!
hope you get well soon!
x.
Sipping chicken broth will get you much needed protein since eating popsicles and pudding might give you a sugar headache or worse yet prevent you from sleeping. Remember: no straws!
i had three of my wisdom thooths removed. it wasn’t that bad, you can just get quite a bit swollen. and for food i think that mashed potatoes with spinach is a good thing to eat cause it is so soft, and and vegetable soup, and maybe some very little macaronis with sauce. i hope you’ll be ok:)
If you keep ice on your face, you shouldn’t swell too much. When I got mine done, they told me I wasn’t allowed popsicles because you have to suck on them and the action isn’t good for the stitches. No straws either. Surprisingly, mac and cheese was great cut into tiny pieces after all sorts of mush. Apple sauce is good too.
Good luck!
good luck, i had to get 4 teeth taken out for braces, it was painful!! feel for you!
Cozy Shack rice pudding, the regular version (not the cinnamon – it sounds good but trust me, it’s terrible).
Ja, ja divertido.

I lived on Jello, Oatmeal, and Ice Cream. Popsicles may be ok as long as you don’t suck on them. It sounds weird but over the wounds your mouth will form “plugs” if they come out, you will be in a lot more pain.
Best of luck and I hope you have a speedy recovery!
Eeeeek good luck, I have an irrational fear of the dentist! I never knew what to eat after having a tooth pulled and always starved so I’m reading the other suggestions with great interest! I adore your blog, can’t believe I never came across it before. Can we swap links? I’m adding you to my blogroll nonetheless! xoxo
good luck!
I had two out and then the other two…both times I started out my recovery with a chocolate milkshake. I stocked my fridge with cozy shack rice & chocolate pudding…I made sure to have a vat of icecream in the freezer too. More importantly, I laid out my most favorite films and got myself ready for what became a 15 hour “movie madness.” By the time I got halfway through Amelie I was covered in icecream & had an entirely different ache…my stomach!
Lots of luck…best words of wisdom (pun intended): begin icing both sides of your face as soon after the surgery as possible…you can completely avoid swelling that way!
Greek yogurt w honey!! The protein will help you feel full longer.
with what Amber B said- no sucking! if those “plugs” come out you’ll get dry sockets and owwie.
i had ‘complications’ with mine- cause my doc was a nut so i’m sure you’ll be fine– but i lived off of slimfast for a couple weeks. that way you’re not completely deprived of what your body needs.
SMOOTHIES! I started off by going to Planet Smoothie and then about 3 deep I realized I could make my own delicious ones at home. When I got all 4 out last year I lived on them. I did ice, skim milk, peanut butter, 2 bananas and yogurt in a blender (just eyeball everything). Absolutely perfect for a liquid wisdom-teeth diet!!!
Do a saltwater rinse each day. My oral surgeon suggested this and I had ZERO problems- I swear it healed it quickly. I had mine out on a Friday and was at school feeling (and looking) perfectly normal by Monday. Good luck!
Ugh, I’m sorry…that is no fun:( But, I will say, I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled about ten years ago and was eating solid foods the next day. Sometimes it just goes really well. In the meantime, I would suggest chicken noodle soup…the kind you had when you were a kid!…and sorbet. Get well soon, munchkin:)
Oh, dear, sometimes they do have to come out…..Helen and I send our good wishes for the least painful movie marathon….yes, definitely use those ice bags…or bags of frozen vegetables on both sides of your face….have you tried the Trader Joe’s tapioca pudding…..yummy….
Oh no… good luck! Hope you feel better soon
PS. That picture is hysterical
i ate mashed potatoes when i was sick of sweets! and yes, don’t use a straw!!
good luck!!! hope it goes well, make sure you cool your cheeks with ice! helped me a lot! dont forget to buy straws too!! kathrinxo

Oh doll, good luck! Hope it goes smoothly, and glad you thought ahead for some nest-prep.
Ibuprofen is your bestfriend. Best of luck! Hope your dentist is competent and sweet.
Applesauce, Jell-O, and when/if you get tired of all the sweet stuff, chicken broth! Good luck!
Good luck with that
Get plenty of rest !
frozen yogurt! it’s healthier than ice cream, but just as delicious.
good luck emily! no, you won’t look like the little guy in the picture. get some rest, eat lots of frozen treats! xx
I had all 4 of mine removed at once…but they had to cut jaw bone to remove them so I don’t know if your experience will be comparable. There were only a couple days of completely soft food…ice cream, I didn’t want to open my mouth enough for popsicles, mashed potatoes (my favorite comfort food), saltines melting on my tongue (I am a salts person over sweets), pudding, ice chips, a thick tomato soup….good luck!
Good luck. I had a terrible time with mine. Hopefully you recover quickly!
I think you should become a milkshake connoisseur! Good luck today!
Ouch! Course you won’t look like him
Plus it’s a good comfort food if you’re feeling down from all the toothache!
My advice is OATMEAL! You can make it yummy by adding loads of stuff, peanut butter, nutella, honey, raisins or whatever…Any dried fruit and stuff ou add usually goes all squishy so it’s easy to eat
xx
Slim Fast Shakes! Seriously – pretty delish, not to mention nutritious:) Go get ‘em tiger.
My advice is to stay on that couch for a solid two days and lay low for a couple after that. As soon as I felt better, I was up and moving . . and then I wasn’t feeling so well again. I ate soup and mashed potatoes, too.
I suggest angel food cake (from the box is fine), cut a big slice, pile on fresh strawberries. Let this sit for a few minutes so the juice from the berries can soften up the cake. Pile on Whipped cream. Repeat.
I hope your recovery is quick and relatively painless!
GOOD LUCK! I’m sure it will be a quick recovery. When I had my tonsils out I ate lots of italian ice
and I’m sure you might be able to do some mashed potatoes after two days
Hope everything goes smoothly!
xoxo

Way to be prepared! Hope all goes well and that your cheeks are back to normal asap!
(I linked to your beach wave tutorial today.)
oh gosh…I remember that – no worries, it sounds like you’ve got all bases covered. Have boyfriend on hand to help and keep that gauze packed & fresh at all times (that’s the part I remember most). Jello & pudding are your new bff’s. good luck! xo
oh no
feel better!!!
Oh, I just want to warn you NOT to suck on the popsicles. Seriously. Just lick them. Because sucking on foods after getting your wisdom teeth pulled can cause dry socket, which I got after drinking out of a straw about a week after having the surgery. It is NOT fun! Just eat slowly and stay away from straws. I would suggest soup and smoothies.
Ouch, ouch, ouch! I hope you recover quickly… your nest sounds like a great place to spend the day! My dentist has let me “use” my wisdom teeth as real teeth… I don’t understand it, but I’m going to go ahead and accept the blessing.
Good luck!! When I had mine out I was like a zombie for a while because of all the drugs but other than that I was fine. I ate lots of mashed potatoes and jell-o. Hope everything goes well!
Anything smoothie-like — just be sure to ditch the straw. Also, don’t plan on eating anything right away, you’ll miss your mouth a bunch and the chipmunk cheeks will be the least of your worries.
Oh! And be sure to drink water lots, and make sure it gets at where the teeth were inbetween the pudding, smoothies, soup, mashed potatoes, etc. It’s soo easy for them to get infected.
Oh my I feel your pain. I had some dental surgery about six weeks ago. I suggest stocking up on Jell-O. That was all I ate for about a week. Good Luck!
applesauce! they even make a berry flavor (from target if you have one near you). oat meal& mashed potatoes (and maybe tomato soup?) if you’re looking for something warm.
Not only will you swell, but you’ll bruise as well. It’s not very cute. And cleaning out the pockets is nothing short of disgusting. But none of it matters when you’re high as a kite on the meds they give you…
Mashed potatoes were *awesome* when I got mine out. With all the soft sweets out there, it was nice to eat something with some substance.
I actually had no pain with mine! They have me pain medicine and I wasn’t even sore. It was a real blessing. So maybe you’ll turn out like me with no pain
But my brother and my sister all had really bad pain and swelling. I guess it all just depends who you are…
My step-mom bought me those Country Crock tubs of mashed potatoes and mac & cheese…and the best thing ever – buttery cheese grits. OMG. I wish I could eat like that all the time.
baked potatoes and rice are delicious post-op treats.
i had 2 teeth pulled in 2 days and what got me through was when my dad went to starbucks and he picked my favorite frapuccino and i would eat it with a spoon..
wish you the best of luck and the fastest recovery..
D
Hope you have a speedy recovery. . .but not too speedy that you don’t have an excuse to enjoy a delicious milkshake!
Eek! Haven’t had to get mine taken out, yet. But, applesauce and jello would help!
Good luck!
Emily! Oy vey! Your wisdom teeth! I have a 2 great movies sugg: 2 days in Paris and Purple Violets. Be well soon !!
I am sorry! I got mine out last year and thought I would never be the same again, but about 2 weeks later I was fully recovered.
I would drink a lot of Naked drinks, they give you all of your nutrients and are super yummy, so at least you can stay healthy while you are recovering.
Get well soon!
Watch Penelope. Its a stunning movie, and even if you do look like that cute little squirrel at least you can be happy you don’t have a piggy snout!
When I got my wisdom teeth out I didn’t realize I could ever miss sandwiches so much (seriously, I actually cried over my loss of chewing abilities). I stuck to mostly jello, pudding and ice cream when when I was desperate for something that wasn’t sweet I’d switch to broth or mac and cheese. Also- the dentist told me that I’d be able to eat solids after 3 or 4 days but it took me a whole week before I could so just be prepared for that.
PS- my mom let me sleep for like 6 hours after the surgery and when I woke up I had nothing in my system to stave off the pain. Needless to say it was easily the most pain I’ve ever been in so remember to take your pain killers!!
yikes! I know how this feels…I had mine pulled a few years ago. Just rest up:)
You’ll do fine. I got all four of mine out right before I left for Europe in college, and they actually had to slice open the roof of my mouth to get to one — ouch! I still have a scar. Enjoy the painkillers, and try Jamba Juice (with a spoon, no straws allowed) and mashed potatoes
Good luck!
Also, to echo Suze above — don’t take any painkillers before eating. I learned the hard way. Throwing up having just had teeth ripped out is NOT fun.
Sending good vibes your way! Definitely do the saltwater rinse. I recommend buying several bags of frozen peas in case you need to numb the cheeks a bit. Jell-o (which I haven’t eaten since I got mine out), lukewarm smoothies (no straw!), and applesauce will help you get thru!
Oh, good luck! When I had mine out I didn’t swell up very much at all. It wasn’t so bad! xo
I’ll be thinking of you, Emily. My sister had hers out a few years ago. I suggest lots and lots of ice cream!!!
Good luck Emily! When I had mine out, I slept for almost two days straight bc the meds made me really tired (and really sick, I couldnt keep anything down). Once I was able to eat, I had lots of EasyMac and chocolate Frostys from Wendys. Yum!
Two words … well I guess one word: PinkBerry
Do it for us who can’t have it everyday.
ohhh! good luck! i have to get mine out this summer too. yuck stupid wisdom teeth. but you have lots of yummy treats and fun movies !
Scrambled eggs (the protein will help you heal), gazpacho minus the chunks, smoothies, yogurt, mac & cheese… Good luck!
Best of luck! I had mine out 2 summers ago. I chose to stay awake and have laughing gas. It really wasn’t that bad. I think I may have taken one pain pill or just Advil after the process.
If you have any bleeding after you’re done, I put flavored tea bags (chamomile was good!) in my mouth to apply pressure. My better than cotton/gauze!
Hope you’re feeling better soon & enjoy all those ice pops and ice cream
Ouch! I had this done as a senior in high school…I feel your pain. The only thing that made me happy were fresh strawberry milkshakes. Hope the pain is fleeting….
Milk shakes or fruit smoothies, chicken and dumplings, apple sauce, yogurt, egg drop soup…things like that. Good luck. You’ll be perfectly fine!
You’ll do fine, hon! Enjoy cuddling on your couch over the weekend. And this is a great excuse for drinking chocolate malts.
my hubby is an oral surgeon and pulls wisdom teeth every day and not everyone swells up!! if you bleed at all when you get home – take a wet tea bag and bite down on it!!! and don’t be afraid to ask for a prescription for a good pain killer! get some good dvds and magazines and relax in bed for the weekend! good luck!
I had my wisdom teeth out a few years ago and it wasn’t too bad. I was down for a few days but after that I was able to go to work. My cheeks didn’t reach chipmunk status, just a little bruising so hopefully you are as lucky. My faves to eat during that time were mashed potatoes and milkshakes. At least you have 80′s movies to keep you company. I love 16 Candles, Breakfast Club, Mystic Pizza, Pretty in Pink…you get the point. I could go on forever about my love of 80′s movies. Good luck and hope you have a speedy recovery!
Good luck!!! I had mine taken out a few years ago, and it was lots of pudding and popsicles for me too. Milkshakes are great as well, but DON’T drink with a straw!!!! Eat with a spoon…
Happy recovery!
Ice cream and almost frozen apple sauce was all I could eat. Nothing else was cold enough so it hurt to try… Good luck!
Chocolate malt Ovaltine, mashed potatoes (get creative), cold soups, applesauce…nothing to warm or it will hurt. Salt water rinse is a great idea as well as no sucking on anything! Good Luck
Gelato – from Al Gelato will surely cure you!
Let me know if you need anything, you live so close to the office I can totally come by and bring you something should you need it.
Oh, PS. may sound gross but my stitches liked to bleed at night, so use an old pillow that you wouldn’t mind getting rid of. I almost ruined my favorite stuffed animal…
Arnica, a great homoepathic remedy, works well to reduce swelling, bleeding, and bruising. Arnica is available at Whole Foods, CVS…
I second Trader Joes rice pudding and I just got a big ole thing of mashed potatoes from KFC (the only thing I trust there!). Seriously I had a fantastic time with whatever painkillers they gave me and just curled up on my papasan and watched SATC reruns. Only thing that sucked was I couldn’t eat nuts for like 4 months until the gaps healed.
Good luck! My advice: ice, ice, ice!!
Oh, you poor thing! I had all four at once, too. REMEMBER to take your PAIN MEDICATION as directed. Do *not* forget a single dose. That was, in all seriousness, my only problem: I waited too long to take a dose, and I sure felt it. Smoothies might be good for flavor, consistency, and some healthy calories. You’re going to be all right — I know it! xox
good luck! thank goodness for the 80′s and their movie making skills
Good luck and tons of people are thinking about you!
Really smooth mashed potatoes, tomato soup and smoothies work well. If you have a Jamba Juice nearby I highly reccomend sending someone to fetch you some. My sister had hers out last week and I took care of her. Warning: if you take viccadin make sure you eat something substantial too. She fainted on me.
Good Luck!!! sleep alot and take your meds early so that they dont wear off!
I hope you’re getting knocked out during the procedure? Scrambled eggs, milkshakes…good luck!
warm soaked tea bags in the back of the mouth helped the healing process also.
I had all four of mine removed when I was about 12. Word of wisdom…do not attempt to eat anything you have to chew. I did so, and, while I was numb, didn’t realize I was repeatedly chomping down on the inside of my cheek. Once the numb feeling went away, however, I was in a ridiculous amount of pain, and my mouth was swollen.
Stick with JELLO, ice cream, and popsicles. If you need a little more substance, you can always have some chicken broth, or the like.
Get well soon!
good luck, mine were out last month!
I lived on froyo, soup, and custard! I had a really bad go at it, so I honestly hope that yours is much better!
I wish you the best and a speedy recovery. I had all 4 of mine out at the same time and it was no where as bad as I thought it would be. Alirrle swollen, and achy, but nothing terrifying. You’ll be back to your old self before you know it!! Take care!!
You’ll be fine if you do this: Get ice packs or frozen vegetables and wrap them around your face with towels and pantyhose! Seriously don’t spend a minute without that and you went look like a chipmunk! Also eat a lot of milkshakes!
Oh forgot to mention no matter what do not drink through a straw!!!!!
you poor thing! have the boyfriend get the ice packs ready! good luck… I had this done after college and it was a big pain, but you’ll be so glad once it’s done!
You will get sick of sweet things all the time pretty fast. I really liked instant mashed potatoes, lots and lots of soup, and quiche!
When I got mine out, it sucked!! Don’t try to eat ANYTHING that is actually food or you will regret it! I lived off pudding, apple sauce, smoothies and mashed potatoes for a week and lost 6 pounds lol. My face swelled up like a chipmunk for a couple days but I still went to work, just to get mocked by my co-workers. Hope you feel better soon!
my own experience with 4 impacted wisdom teeth really wasn’t all that bad–hoping the same for you! xo
good luck! I hope you don’t get too swollen either, but it is kind of unavoidable! I got mine pulled years ago and it wasn’t too bad because mine didn’t even have roots. the best part is eating all the pudding and popsicles you want. I tried to eat soup after I got mine pulled and that didn’t work because I was so numb it just dribbled out of my mouth! but maybe some cinnamon apple sauce would be good. or like others have said, mashed potatoes. take advantage of the situation to eat bad and sleep a lot!
Hi Emily. I hope it’s okay that I linked to your blog. I really love your site, and you have great style! I actually discovered yours through Karina’s Anywhere But Here. Mine is just getting started and I’m clueless as to what I’m doing. You’re having your wisdom teeth removed? Ouch. Hopefully they will give you some good pain pills and I definitely recommend drinking Orange Dream Machine Jamba Juice. So good. Feel better!
http://www.believablegiraffe.blogspot.com
good luck! my only advice would be to take the vicodin as prescribed, as it helps with the swelling & bruising (as well as the pain). and don’t use nice pillow covers, as you’ll probably drool on them. haha. =) lots of luck!
Oh, I definitely remember that dreaded trip to the dentist… so, I’m sending you lots and lots of get well soon wishes! xxx
good luck!!
sorbet is a nice, summery treat, and a nice variation on ice cream.
Aww I have to get mine out soon, good luck! (If that’s the right thing to say?!)
oh, my dentist has never seriously brought up removing my wisdom teeth… yet. i live in fear of the day he does
I lived on grits! I hope you get better soon!
http://clothedmuch.blogspot.com
smoothies, scrambled eggs, milkshakes, pudding, ice cream, popsicles..my mom used to cook ground beef in small pieces (like you would for chili or something) so I could get some protein but wouldn’t need to chew it.
Good luck! It’s really not so bad.
two words. dry sockets.
Hope you feel better soon! Definitely rent Mystic Pizza a cult classic. Maybe have some Menchi’s yogurt yummmmmm and some great cream of wheat or oatmeal….hmmm Miso soup or creamy tomato soup…that’s my fave.
I’m having mine ripped out very soon – I’m not looking forward to it… frozen yoghurt is the best stuff for sore teeth though!
i would say yoghurt with fruits and ice cream and melted choc (eeww!!). but anyway, hope that you would get well soon.
Oh dear, hope you don’t suffer too much. I hate the dentist…
Chicken Broth got me through those couple days, in addition to popsicles and such. Its substantial enough that you wont faint from hunger when you finally start feeling better.
Let me know what works best for you, because I have to get mine removed soon too. My dentist just informed me!!
Hope you feel better soon.
after my oral surgery all I ate/drank for two days was various flavors of milkshakes. It’s not the healthiest choice, but it makes you feel a LOT better
ahh this squirrel scares me! hehe
love your blog..
Lola.
Ooo, I’ll be sure to remember that when I get mine out. Pre-making the nest and watching 80s movies are great choices (: Mashed potatoes if you like them? sweet sticky rice? That second one might be a mess, but I love it with mango ice cream at Thai restaurants, and it’s pretty soft.
Hope all goes well!
ooohh…
you are in my thoughts. I’ve always loved soft serve ice cream – chocolate of course. Which movies!!! There are some great ones from the 80s. My personal favorites are Pretty in Pink, Heathers and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun…
Have a restful, healing weekend!!!
3 words, Fondue, fondue, fondue. Well OK that’s one but you can prepare it in a variety of ways, both savoury and sweet.
I hope you’re better and that “Sixteen Candles” aged well.
oh good luck. i am very scared for the day I have to have mine removed. : (
Oh God, good luck with that!
Hi! I love your blog. I’m also loving the big gold and silver watches that you’ve been wearing. Know where I can get one or two? Thanks!
I had mine taken out when I was 17 (earlier this year) which is strange for me to see people 10 years older than me getting them out. It’s crazy. My mom hoarded my vicoden cause she thought I’d be addicted. I ate a lot of Jello. and soup.
