Tasty Tortillas

tortillas.jpg

I could easily eat Mexican food for months on end without it ever getting old.  That’s why, when my friend Amy told me how simple homemade flour tortillas were to make, I was immediately intrigued.  Turns out, they were pretty easy to make (though I did have to throw out my first, horribly dry batch) but the end result was amazing.  I used this recipe and highly recommend pairing them with sauteed shrimp, homemade guacamole and some gimlets.

Yum, yum, yum! I’m so with you on the Mexican food. My neighbor just brought down homemade salsa. With that and now your nudge, I might just have to scrap a day on the ole meal plan to sub some South of the border food. Looks delicious!

From here in Texas I definitely agree on the Mexican food…give me some guacamole, beans, rice, and corn or whole wheat tortillas and I’m a very happy girl…or veggie fajitas which I had Sunday – YUM! Your tortillas look great.

21 The Lil Bee { 06.23.09 at 6:49 am }

Gimlets! How deliciously old school of you! I have to say, though I’m not a cook, I make a mean guacamole. So this sounds like something Paul and I could actually do together for a fun outdoor meal. Love it:)

22 underfunded heiress { 06.23.09 at 6:56 am }

Wow, homemade. I would never think to try to make them from scratch. I don’t eat seafood but I’m going to try this recipe veg style. The guacamole looks delicious!!!!

27 Jillian { 06.23.09 at 8:19 am }

I feel the same way. I could eat Mexican food everyday, especially homemade guac! Some of my friends who aren’t from the west coast don’t get the fascination. How can you not love Mexican food?!

28 Nicole Marie { 06.23.09 at 8:25 am }

I’m missing taco tuesday tonight to go to the baseball game. great seats, beer, fries, cracker jacks and red ropes, yet I’m still very sad to be missing my weekly mexican food.

I’ll have to try the tortillas later this week. I will try any recipe you put on here after trying the sangria. I’ve made it probably 6 times already and it’s always a hit.

29 keli { 06.23.09 at 8:38 am }

Tortillas take time and lots of practice. I haven’t mastered them yet, but my mom makes the best flour tortillas. Perfectly round, fluffy, soft and so delicious!

Your dishes always come out fantastic!

51 Anne @ The City Sage { 06.23.09 at 4:13 pm }

Go you! I have yet to be truly pleased with my attempts at homemade tortillas…their always too sticky or so dry that they fall apart. I’m so impressed with your result!

i never thought about making my own tortillas but that sounds like a great idea! Lately i’ve been frying corn tortillas to make taco shells and they taste so much better than store bought taco shells.

Homemade tortillas are the best! When I was completely broke I made homemade tortillas almost every night. They are super cheap to make and incredibly delish :) .

67 Kim { 06.29.09 at 10:04 am }

This looks wonderful! I love homemade tortillas! My mom taught me how to make them. I don’t know if I have ever had a gimlet. Hmmm. I ‘ll have to try one!

Love your blog!

68 Jen { 06.29.09 at 11:24 am }

I loved this recipe! Me and my boyfriend made a night of it and made homemade margaritas as well. I do have a question…when you had the tortilla dough on the stove did your dough puff up and make bubbles? I figured it was normal but I wanted to make sure I didn’t have too much water in my dough.

Thanks so much, it was a lot of fun :)
