Sweet Celebrations

{Coconut cupcakes with coconut cream cheese frosting}
It’s funny how birthdays evolve as you get older. When you’re a kid, you’re mainly concerned with who’s coming to your party, what dress you’re going to wear (or baseball cap in my case) and which flavor of ice cream cake to serve. With each passing year, things seem to get more complicated and there’s a new sort of pressure associated with your “special day.” I like to keep things simple to avoid any drama or disappointment and had an intimate brunch with several girlfriends on Sunday. Plus, anytime you can start off a day with a cupcake and a glass of champagne is a winner in my book.

{Table setting with white and natural touches}
{Fruit salad with berries, mango and kiwi}

{Bagel spread with cream cheese, lox, tomatoes, onions and capers}
{Mimosas with colorful mermaids to distinguish people’s glasses}

Me and my girlfriends did Sunday brunch too! Where did you have yours at? Love it!
aww I want some!
I have to agree with you, if you put too much pressure on that special day, invite tons of people, get caught up in insane preperations, … it usually just turns out to dissapoint! I am thinking simple red-velvet cupcakes and cosmos for my next birthday!

Yes, there’s so much pressure associated with birthdays these days. I always try to take off the pressure and just do something with a few girlfriends too. Brunch with your girlfriends sounds like the perfect way to spend your birthday. And I completely agree, there’s nothing better than a cupcake and a glass of champagne to celebrate any special occasion. Happy Birthday!

those mermaids are adorable and your picture of those berries is mouthwatering;)
happy birthday and you certainly have the right attitude. as we get older it seems more and more difficult to figure out what’s an appropriate expectation of the people in our lives. as our worlds get busier, it’s less and less easy to pay attention to other peoples’ special moments. by arranging an event yourself to hit your expectations and inviting your people, you’re showing such maturity and getting the special time you wanted at the same time!
it looks like it was a perfect brunch!

Looks like you had a great birthday! and I sooo understand what you mean, every year its always, “what am i gonna do for my bday”. this year, in order to conserve funds for my upcoming vacay, i just had a simple dinner with my friends and family, and it was pretty awesome. i’m thinkin cupcakes and champagne are on the list for next year!
This is quite literally the best birthday brunch I’ve ever seen. The cupcakes! The little mermaids (where did you get those!!) bagels, and fruit salad. That is definitely simple without being overdone

Beautifully simple — I love the idea of a birthday brunch!
Two things, the cupcakes look amazing and I’m not even a huge fan of coconut if it’s not in a pina colada…also, I am SO thankful that you omitted a picture of the lox and company because I’m not allowed to have smoked fish while pregnant and that is ALL I CRAVE. So, thank you for not bringing attention to my heartache.
Yum food and fashion I really am liking your blog! I just found it recently
You are one chic chef! The food looks delicious.
I’ve made those cupcakes before, but I put a little bit of pineapple in the center and toasted the coconut. Mmm…coconut.
So… nothing has ever been cuter! After reading your blog, you have truly inspired me to get out there and attempt baking all of these mouth watering desserts! i love it all!
How do your baked treats always come out looking so pretty? I don’t always have that good of luck

This looks fabulous! It’s so true how the things you’re concerned about evolve every year. It’s my birthday this Friday and I’m out of town all week visiting clients. All I want is to go home Friday night and see my man for my bday! Sappy, but true.

Mmm this all looks AMAZING, especially the coconut cupcakes… and, who am I kidding, the mimosas. Yes, please! Happy late birthday!
Lox and Bagels is one of my all time favorite meals. We have a place called Gotham Bagels here with that as their specialty, I make my way there every Sunday – it’s a weekend tradition I’ve become accustomed to.

Thanks very much for sharing. It is quite useful.
I made these cupcakes last night and they are amazing, thank you for sharing this recipe Emily.
I made the cupcakes yesterday and they were fab. I had to make my own buttermilk – but it is super easy. I also just halved the quantity and it still made 12. Yum!
