i live on the east coast and i am still not a happy camper about being cold. i think it is dumb. anyways, i really got into the gloves with the finger tips cut off so you can actually use your fingers. you cant use a touch screen phone with big honker gloves on thats for sure. so to this obstacle gloves give you in life, get the fingerless ones. gap makes some cute ones too that have a detatchable mitten part so you can sometimes have your whole fingers covered when your super cold and dont need to use your fingers:) its awesome. hope this helps!

I'm so not a fan of winter (why I live in a cold weather climate is beyond me!). but at least I can wear cool winter accessories. Love the riding boots & socks :)!! Maybe that'll make winter seem better...

I just ordered this jacket to help brave the harsh winters in WI/MN: http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446240697&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=282574490914679&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395222441&bmUID=1260690156399&ev19=2:25
And you'll definitely want something cashmere to wrap around your neck, like this: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2815691/0~2376779~6008000~6025603~6026174?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6026174&P=2
It adds all the warmth you'll need, with none of the bulk.
The only gloves that cut the wind and pass the test in terms of style points are this amazingly soft pair of black leather mittens (they also come in brown) from Nordstrom with a rabbit fur gloved lining. They don't sell them online, but if you call any Nordstrom in a part of the country that experiences winter you can get them.
Love the blog!!

I'm from Ohio, so the temperatures drop like crazy. It went from 5o degrees to 13 with a windchill of -3 in 1 day! I would recommend lots of layers. And if your doing a lot of walking outside, those little handwarmer and footwarmer packets are a god send. Good luck and Have fun!

http://thesoundoflace.blogspot.com/
I love to layer my skirts with boots, leggings and over the knee socks. I go to NY every January and have found that this is a good way to stay warm and stylish (I end up usually having to wear 2 pairs of leggings).
Check out my leggings and over the knee socks at http://thesoundoflace.blogspot.com/

LOVE what you've picked.... I live in Chicago where it is super cold and WINDY too.... you'll be fine as long as it isn't snowing. When it is windy, an umbrella doesn't really do a thing except add to your aggravation. Your boots are SUPER cute - I want them! But, they better be waterproof and have a grippy sole. You can usually buy a grippy thingy at your local shoe repair guy to add to the bottom so you aren't slipping and sliding in all of the ice... embarrassing! Good luck, beautiful!

I think it's much more enjoyable to visit for a few days than to live with the constant cold! Up here in Portland we enjoy mild winters (except this one, apparently). I have enjoyed visiting colder places in the winter, but after a few days the joy slowly fades.
The bright side, you can try some new accessories. Please enjoy your trip and I can't wait to read about it.

The best advice I ever recieved when I moved from SF to the east coast was to wear leggings under my jeans. It seems silly, but they help cut down on the wind chill factor and if you use cotton they still breath really well, so you wont sweat when you're inside the way you would with long johns.
Otherwise, lots of layers. tank top, long sleeve, sweater then coat and scarf. It gets easier when you live here and adjust, but its brutal at first! And december in NY isn't as brital as January in NY will be....

I live in Montreal, Canada and us Canadians know a thing or two about Winter. As for your coat, a few key things: a 3/4 length coat is key - to make sure your butt is warm, a hood*, that it zips up (to cut the harsh wind), that the sleeve openings are not too big (again because of the wind) and is down-filled. A wool coat just won't suffice...Other necessities: a HAT that covers your ears, thick scarf, warm gloves or I prefer mitts - they're warmer (leather is not warm). As for layering - tights AND socks (if your feet freeze it's all over) and you can wear a tank underneath. Good luck!! xxx

I'm in the SF bay area right now, but I've also lived in Massachusetts, Shanghai (very wet and cold), and went to college at UCLA so I do have an inkling for how we Californians are rather un-impervious to temperatures below 60 haha! It actually snowed up here in the east bay earlier this week. Anyhow, I believe that the innermost layer is the most important - if you have something not-very-effective on the inside, then whatever you put over it is not going to help. I would recommend getting a thin woolen undershirt and woolen leggings as these will insulate very well. I also have had luck wearing thermal activewear such as the thermal compression tops that Under Armour makes. It is very form-fitting and thin to boot so you won't feel too bulky with all the other layers you will put on top. Hope that helps!
