Snow Day
I’m being flown out to New York next week (details to come soon) and it looks like I’m going to get my first taste of winter. For us West coast natives, anything under 60° is considered arctic and honestly, I’m not sure how I’m going to survive. I can’t wait to visit the city during Christmastime, but I’m going to have to do some serious shopping before I leave. Here are some of my cold weather picks and if you have any advice on layering/bundling, I’d be very appreciative!
1. Sky Umbrella, $48
2. Black Wool Coat, $240
3. Tartan Wool Coat, $750
4. Antler Cardigan, $190
5. Lace Trim Gloves, $36
6. Tassel Shawl, $150
7. Earmuffs, $115
8. Riding Boots, $99.95
9. Ski Socks, $19
10. Earflap Hat, $36

I’m not a cold weather expert but I know you’ll look chic no matter what you layer up in.
http://my-life-in-style.blogspot.com/
posted about that umbrella too, so cute.
I live above you in Seattle. The weather’s never as nice as it is down in California. Jealous !! Lol. It’s actually been below freezing the past couple of days. I don’t mind our cold weather too much, just when it’s below freezing and the sun is out. Lol. It’s nice to be able to pull out those peacoats and trenches, scarves, and etc. Though despite living in Seattle my whole life, I never learn. Definitely wear gloves to keep your hands warm!! and hat/ear muffs, your ears will get numb. Wear thick tights and long sleeves. I like wearing thick tights, and then knee highs over them and then boots if I dress up sometimes. Sorry, I don’t know if I was much help !!
i dont want this to sound negitive, because thats not how i intend it,but i live in northern california, just an hour from sacramento. and we get quite a bit of snow each winter, right now we have about a foot with todays high of 30 degrees. I just wanted to mention that, the stereotype of sunny warm california isnt true for the whole state!!! btw love your winter picks!!! soo cute!!!
newyork weather is horrible during the winter unfortunately. scarves + hats + gloves are such a must. and a super warm kneelength coat will make your life so much easier.
layers are also your best friend.
tanktop + long sleeve + super super warm sweater
enjoy your trip. as terrible the weather is new york is gorgeouss.
I am a cold weather expert, it’s 1 degree here today brrr! The key to staying warm and looking fabulous is layer layer layer. Wool jackets are a must as long as you have an umbrella. Have a great trip!
you’re not only going to be bundled up but you’re going to be freaking adorable!!!
<3
Take as many thin (warm) layers as possible and drink plenty of gingerbread latte’s. I was there 4 years ago, exactly and it was the bitterest cold I have experienced…. and I live in Scotland!
Also, get one of these http://www.urbanoutfitters.co.uk/Triple-Corsage-Headwarmer/invt/5752424457896&bklist=icat,5,shop,womens,womensaccessories,whatsglovesscarves
Enjoy yourself, NY is amazing at this time of year.
It looks like you have most of the basics (heavy coat, head gear, scarf, gloves and BOOTS!). I’d just suggest that you invest in a pair of thermal (or very thick) leggings, and long cardigans are wonderful. I pretty much layer my cashmere sweaters over everything in the winter, but I don’t know if you have any, seeing as you do live in sunny Cali! I’d just suggest layering long sleeves under dresses or with skirts, add leggings and boots, and top off with a cardi, scarf (that can double as a wrap) and a good wool/wool-blend coat. You’ll be fine! Snug as a bug.
the lace trim gloves are pretty but won’t be enough to keep you warm. i recommend leather gloves with fleece lining, cos the snow gets caught in the wool and freezes there. and i’d definitely get a warmer wool scarf and a pretty hat (my earmuffs were never enough in nyc). hope you have a great time!

Wow, I love everything! It’s so detailed and beautiful.
I don’t know anything about bundling as I live in Florida, but when I go to New York I just wear whatever looks cool and suffer the expense all day. Looking good is more important. Ha ha!
bambinababy.blogspot.com
Boots and a gorgeous, warm scarf are key. Have fun.
These picks look great. As long as you have a warm hat, scarf, gloves, and some toasty tights to wear with a good coat, you’ll be fine. New York at Christmastime is so much fun–enjoy it!
Ok those are all not warm enough! I am a DC girl and went to NYC for new year’s last year, and I couldn’t even leave the hotel room when the ball dropped b/c I was SO cold! NYC is just another level of cold, and I would definitely go with a long down coat for warmth and wind blocking instead of wool. I’d recommend this http://www.zappos.com/columbia-luxey-bliss-long-down-jacket or you would be right at place among with the cool NY girls with this: http://www1.bloomingdales.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=433281&CategoryID=2910&PartnerID=SHP&cm_mmc=Froogle-_-Womens-_-COATS_JACKETS-_-The_North_Face%C2%AB_Metropolis_Parka_Coat&utm_source=GoogleProduct&utm_medium=organic. Puffy down may not be exactly what you were thinking, but you will see that this is just what has to and is being worn in NY in the winter. Don’t freeze, and have fun!
oh im packing up right now to fly to the city next week too. im such a baby and even tho im on the east coast already and its been chilly here, the windy city streets are so different! make sure your scarves are big enough to cover your nose! itll be chilly:)
I’m a California girl living in London and it’s not only cold over here, but damp, which chills you to the bone. I am never without a scarf and I usually wear a camisole under tops to add a little extra warmth without the bulk. Like everyone else mentioned, layering is key.
I’d also have to agree with Lorelai about the sunny California stereotype. California has every type of climate except tropical. (also, not at all trying to sound negative
Get a fur jacket. Seriously warm and they’re huge this season in the UK.
I got this one in a vintage shop for £15 (which, if my maths aren’t horribly out, is about $25) – http://thedisappearingangel.blogspot.com/2009/10/vintage-coats-chocolate-cakes.html
It’s the only thing that’s helping me to survive winter in Glasgow, Scotland.
All of this is so lovely and I agree, I come from Australia and whenever I visit a cold place I freeze to death!
what fun! my tip is to look v. cute but under a v. warm coat. scarves and hats and gloves can make up for the snowman effect. sort of.
get SILK thermal underwear!
A warm cashmere scarf (think Burberry) will help tremendously. Watch the streets and sidewalks if you have expensive boots because they put salt down and it can ruin nice leather! Warm leather gloves with lining are a must. It’s too early to get super-cold, so you should be OK. Have fun! The city is soooo beautiful at this time of year.
I live in NYC and its been a pretty tame winter up until about this week. I would recomend definetly some skinny jeans with boots (I know Uggs aren’t really in anymore, but they are SO warm!), dresses with leggings (tights can be a littly chilly) and cardigans. I would also bring a cute hat, fingerless gloves (makes things so much easier), and a warm scarf. Don’t forget the coat!
Hope that helps! Have a great time visiting! Enjoy all the city has to offer at Christmas time!
LAYER! LAYER! LAYER!
The key is to have lots of layers to move around in and comfy (but stylish) shoes. The boots are perfect for this!
Definitely wear boots, especially if when you’re walking around. Save heels for cabs and indoor events. It gets super slushy with foot deep puddles.
All that stuff is great, but you need to make sure underneath it all that you layer.
I’m a New Yorker and in the winter, when it is raining or snowing or doing that gross rain/snow combo thing, I live in my wellies and warm socks.
Your picks are adorable! The only thing is if it’s snowing make sure your shoes aren’t slippery. That hat will definitely keep you warm!
I’m sure you’ll do just fine! Layer your tights – you can do two pairs and THEN a pair of socks on top of that if necessary. Tall boots are a must. Invest in a silk slip for underneath your dresses, and a hat with earflaps. Can’t wait to hear about the reason for this trip …
Oh, good luck! I spent 20 minutes unburying my car in NY this morning. One thing that sucks about winter—you wear a heavy sweater for the 3 minutes from car to door, then the heat is so cranked inside you’re sweating all day. No silk long underwear or double layers of tights… you’ll die. All you need is one heavy coat (North Face, with a hood, 600 ct. down. Not pretty, but functional. Keep your hair dry!) and boots you can change out of. Boots that don’t let water in, like Ugg Adirondack boots, which are cute too
http://corksandcaftans.wordpress.com
Ohhh I am loving those gloves!! Really love the tassel shawl too!
A giant scarf is necessary! One that covers most of your neck
Have fun!!!
I love your winter picks. Have fun in New York Emily!
Check out all my designer shoes including my Givenchy lace up boots at http://www.fashionsnag.com
After this morning’s cold rain shower, definitely bring an umbrella that is sturdy and won’t blow inside out. If its raining and your umbrella goes inside out, your cute clothes will be soaked! And as cute as riding boots are, I would recommend wellies or something waterresistant. It is no fun sitting around in wet leather boots all day.
Also, if I can recommend, something like these http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?itemdescription=true&itemCount=60&startValue=1&selectedProductColor=&sortby=&id=16847675&parentid=SHOP_ALLHERGIFTS&sortProperties=+subCategoryPosition,&navCount=342&navAction=poppushpush&color=&pushId=SHOP_ALLHERGIFTS&popId=GENERAL_CATEGORY_SHOP&prepushId=
Have a great time here in NYC!

because your gloves might get wet fingertips. You’ll have complete access to your cellphone
http://lindseybalbierz.blogspot.com/
I would get a jacket like this. It will keep you warm and be waterproof if it snows.
http://www1.bloomingdales.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=458120&CategoryID=5585&PageID=5585*1*24*-1*-1*6
The earmuffs are a good choice because they won’t kill your hair like a hat. Just make sure you wear boots with good grips because there is nothing worse than slipping in slush.
New York at this time of year is magical. Have fun!
I live in NYC, and when my west coast relatives visit they act like it’s the artic, and when my New England/canadian relatives visit they act like they’re on holiday in Florida
I guess it really depends.
Hope you have a wonderful time!
Great picks Emily! We already have a foot and a half of snow here in Michigan! I only wish I could claim 60 feels cold! HA HA. Whatever you do make sure you water proof your boots! Because walking around with soaked feet is not going to be pleasant at all! Have fun in NYC, I bet the city is magically. Oh and make sure your jacket it WOOL!
xoxo

P.S. DON’T FORGET TO ENTER MY SHOPBOP GIVEAWAY.
http://www.talkprettytome.blogspot.com
yup, that looks like what we wear. but i would suggest finger-less gloves because you won’t want to take them off ever.
I’m a Montreal girl… similar Winters to New York but a little worse. We just g0t ourt first major snowfall but it’s not too cold yet (by my standards though, not yours I’m sure!) You made some great choices, with lots of soft, not-too-bulky layers beneath a hooded coat, a cute hat & gloves, thick tights, a great pair of waterproof rubber-soled boots and a delicious hot beverage to carry around and you’ll be shopping blissfully all day! Lucky girl, have fun!
http://idlefascination.blogspot.com/
I live in NYC and the walk to work this morning was disgusting! Rain from all directions. Bring a warm waterproof jacket and rainboots
those are great! I wish I lived somewhere it would snow…
it doesnt even get that cold here
http://victoriadiazs.wordpress.com/
it’s gonna be VERY chilly next week…so make sure you bundle up!
A slouchy knit beanie like this one: http://tinyurl.com/ydxjtkg from UO will keep your head warm without destroying your hair. If your head is warm it goes a long way toward keeping the rest of you warm. Gloves and waterproof boots are a must. Keep your extremities warm and the rest of you will feel okay…
I’ve almost always lived in cold climates but I hate being cold. I recommend wearing tights under your pants or layering two pairs of tights. As far as coats go, I always prefer one with a belt. It keeps the cold air from blowing up underneath.
Good luck!
V
Layers are important! The heaters are usually blasting indoors so make sure to start with a tank or short sleeves, then add a sweater on top and a wool coat is necessary. I usually wear tights with tall boots but I live here so I am used to the weather. Also make sure to bring rain boots, and an umbrella because it tends to get pretty slushy here.
It looks like you have a pretty good list here. Scarves, gloves, ear muffs – should do the trick!
good picks! We went to NY last year in February (for Fashion Week) and it was freezing!!!! (Although it is freezing even here in LA) Bring thermals, tights, cashmere dresses, your Hunter Boots, hats, warm scarves. Layer, Layer, Layer! You can always remove a few pieces…
Have fun it will be so beautiful during the holiday season!
http://mandalyzing.blogspot.com
Get some boots; flat ones or at least heels with tread. If there’s snow or slush, it’s going to be wet and slippery. If it’s windy an umbrella won’t do you much good, but a warm hat and gloves will. Scarves are great as well. Personally, I just bought a pair of cashmere gloves that are long enough to reach my elbows and they are divine in the cold. That and a good wool winter coat is essential. Enjoy NYC!
I used to live in NYC and you will die if you wear long johns under your pants! I think they key thing to have is a warm scarf , gloves and a full length coat that is tight to your body to block the wind. If you layer a tee with a sweater under you won’t have a heat stroke when you go into all the shops where the heat is cranked up. Plus, the worst of the NYC weather is not until Jan/Feb. It’s brutal then! Have fun!
Hi Emily!
I had to add my two cents in here, as I’m in Wisconsin, where we are presently enduring BLIZARD conditions! I have to second the girls who have pointed out that you may not/probably won’t be warm enough with your (adorable) picks. I was in NY in October and actually had to stop and buy a pair of Uggs because it was unseasonably cold then. Although I’d brought a pair of new/not broken in leather moto boots, I was cold – with snow and salt added in, you’d also be demolishing your lovelies. Even wellies, with a cozy liner, would work better than those. Also, I’d definitely snag some warmer gloves.
Have fun!!
as someone that lives in new york: it’s not THAT bad right now, but i think soon will be much colder. my key thing is: layer it up with tights and a secret (that is not really a secret), hit up UNIQLO and grab a HEATTECH tee and leggings! they trap heat and it is awesome. you can layer with tights and it’s amazing. no need to look bulky. they have under shirts, long sleeves, etc. knee high boots with it help and a good scarf/ear muff or hat is NEEDED. walking around is no fun.
You’ve got great recs here.
For me in NY I’ll either wear Hunter boots in the rain or my old Fryes. Nothing like rain etc to help break them in faster so they look better faster ; )
Don’t forget your shades if it’s brilliant sunshine but freezing. I LOVE fingerless gloves for shopping in stores without having to keep removing them when I walk inside.
Ps. check out the Rockafeller tree ; )
Karen x
Earmuffs and scarves are lifesavers!
I really love your look! and your clothes ad your blog!!!
Vsit my blog too, im from Brazil!
ooooh this all look so snug and warm i love the earmuffs and the hat with the flaps!
I love the dainty gloves!
Hi- being from Michigan, I have a love hate relationship with winter. As noted above from a previous commenter, layers are your best friend. I know how much you are loving the tight trend right now, so layer up! tights, high socks, t shirt, long sleeve and sweater. Scarf, mittens and a hat are a must… gotta keep you head warm and the wind can be unbearable! lol but I really excited to hear about more details on your trip!
- layer up, cover the hands and head, and its always a good excuse to get a hot cocoa or starbucks!!
My advice is to look for longer gloves. There is nothing worst than unexpected cold air on your wrists when you reach to flag down a cab!
Great picks! I grew up in a bitter cold place and agree w/several of the tips above, layers, huge scarf, lined leather gloves, sunglasses…
Hope I didn’t just miss it–but didn’t see this one: 2 pairs of socks. Many boots aren’t lined, so I think extra layer is necessary.
Can’t wait to hear about what’s taking you to NYC. Except for the cold, Christmas is a great time to be there. XO Piper
go for a cashmere scarf and leggings. can’t wait to hear about your trip
Don’t forget to keep a tissue in your pocket! It can really come in handy if the winter winds pick up and you get the sniffles!
Also, be sure to check out the Rockefeller Tree. It really is heartwarming and extra special in person!
I don’t know about Cali, but up in Washington 60° is positively balmy! Love that umbrella, though.
definitely wear some tights under your pants and have lots of scarves! Gloves are a must!
It is snowing in Boston (rigth now) and is really cold, too! Boston is close to NY, so bring a warm coat, nice boots, umbrella, gloves, hat an your beatiful smile!
xx
lots of layers [especially if you'll be constantly going between indoors and outside], warm socks, good gloves and a scarf…and a hot chocolate from city bakery!
love those boots! layer, layer, layer is all I can say!
http://cupcaketrash.blogspot.com
I love your pics for a New York winter. I spent my last 2 winters in that city and it is COLD! I’d recommend getting “glittens” though–if you need to handle the subway card or a cash for a cab it’s much easier to do with your fingertips uncovered for some reason haha! Also, I would lose the umbrella if it’s just for snow–locals HATE that!
Welcome to my city! I really don’t get people in Cali because u guys r always cold when u come to NYC, lol. NYC is da best during this time esp since we have tons of sales (Barneys, Da best! Saks and all the little stores). Hope to run into u, have fun!
How exciting Emily! I truly think that riding boots are like the perfect way to stay stylish and keep your feet warm in the cold weather!
You need waterproof in case it snows. We are having our first officially snowstorm today in Toronto, seems as though NY is going to get hit too.
Make sure whatever coat you bring has a hood and that your boots are warm warm warm. Good luck!
we might be getting some snow while you’re here so wellies would be a good idea (although not convenient to pack, i know) because nyc rain water/snow/slush is so gross. enjoy your trip!
I don’t know what I’d do without SCARVES. They are lifesavers. If your neck and head are warm, you’re good.
Honestly, all you’ll need are long wool socks over skinny jeans, tucked into your Wellingtons. I always wear my wellies to work (Boston) and bring my “inside” shoes. Today it’s ballet flats
And wear cashmere lined leather gloves (Jcrew). Wool is not fun when cold/wet. Today we got a wintry mix of snow/rain/sleet!
FYI December generally isn’t always that cold in NYC (although it is cold now, since there’s a big snow storm blowing through upstate). January and February are generally the coldest months.
Your list looks pretty good. Just make sure your boots are waterproof. When it snows it gets really slushy, and wet feet are no fun!
I’m going to the East for Christmas (I’m from California) and had the same dilemma. I have 12 coats to choose from, made an online poll, people voted on which one I should bring, and then scratched that poll because I realized that all my coats weren’t warm enough. Even my beloved pea coats. So I am buying long johns, fuzzy riding boots, and the heaviest coat out there.
I have recently moved to New York from Orange County, and would like to give you a little advice on what I now survive off of. Gloves. You can never have to many. Cold hands are never fun.
Tanks and tights under everything. Thick scarves and gloves a must. And plenty of hot, delicious beverages to keep your insides warm. Best of luck!
I’ve always wanted to go to NY in December! I recommend long sleeves for cold weather, scarves that can cover your mouth (it’s amazing how cold your chin can get), thick socks and… if you’re going to wear pants you can wear tights or knee high socks underneath and it helps!
Cute boots, but you’ll probably want a pair of comfy/waterproof boots. I have a pair of Hunter Welly’s in Graphite, with Cream Welly Socks…adorable, warm & dry! Along with the snow, you suffer through the dirty slush & puddles. The Hunter’s are perfect.
i have those Steve Madden boots and they are great! i say wear tights and cute socks, and lots of scarves!
It was mentioned in a comment above that there is salt put out to help melt the ice; make sure you weatherproof/treat your boots. Also wearing a base layer is key. Patagonia has this material called capilene that is very warm and thin enough to go under other clothing. You can get it in many styles.
http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/womens-capilene-baselayer-2-v-neck?p=44831-0-199
A big thing that I would suggest are WOOL SOCKS! They are perfect for the chilly weather and then are cozy when you are relaxing inside in the warm. Don’t be afraid to wear more than one pair of socks. Have FUN.
while i adore the coats your selected ( i featured the tartan coat on my own winter coat list), when the weather is this awful in new york the only real solution is a true down coat. after years of trying to find a solution, last year i found the answer. the elizabeth and james beetle coat. it’s not currently sold in stores but i’m sure it wouldnt be hard to find on the internet somewhere. i am constantly getting complimented and it is possibly the warmest thing i’ve owned. incredible.
a link to view the coat…
http://www.bergdorfgoodman.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod34580020&parentId=cat240005&masterId=cat272900&index=40&cmCat=null
Bring leather gloves for sure! Cozy fuzzy mittens/gloves won’t cut it if its even slightly windy. And I’d only go with layers if you are going to be outside for a long period of time; otherwise you’ll be carrying or checking lots of items – subways, cabs, cafes will all be hot! And its easier to shop if you just stuff your gloves in the pockets and take the coat off!
Enjoy NYC during this Christmas season – I’m jealous as I sit here in Saint Louie just missing the big midwestern storm.
greatttttt picks
HOWEVER, NYCers LOATHE people that carry umbrellas in the snow. there is just no room on the sidewalks for it.
make sure you have a hood instead!
xo
i’m in NYC right now, i live in LA and come here all the time for work. i travel to cold climates all the time…London, Montreal, etc. plus i used to ski for years. your picks aren’t sufficient for real cold, i’m talking 40 degrees and below. in the daytime. you don’t have to completely forgo fashion, you just rock it UNDER your knee length down coat. wool really won’t cut it. don’t fool around or you’ll be miserable. here’s a formula i swear by:
silk long underwear long sleeved top and leggings or anything made from capilene(try Land’s End, Patagonia, REI) it’s lightweight and holds a layer of heat close to the body
long tank, tissue tshirt or thermal
all kinds of cashmere
scarf, hat, gloves, wool
rubber soled boots are warmer than leather soles (more insulation)
warm drinks at all times to keep that internal fire lit.
hand warners in your coat pocket if it gets really deep.
New York women don’t mess aroundwhen it’s cold. They look great inside but there’s nothing fashionable about freezing to death.
and while you’re here, make sure to see the Cartier bldg. It’s wrapped up in a big red bow! Have fun, Emily!
Living in CT, we go to the city all the time at Christmas. As long as you have dry feet you will be fine. Big slushy puddles pool up at the end of every block making walking miserable. Just get a good pair of boots and carry some dry socks in your bag and you’ll be fine. See you there!
I am an LA native, but lived through (and survived!) NYC winters for 8 years! My biggest tip: wearing warm tights under pants. Definitely adds much needed insulation, without packing on bulky additional items. Also, layering items with ZIPPERS is effective in helping transition from the outside frigidity to the indoor warmth, (like when shopping.) And when arriving back to the hotel, or into a restaurant, get those layers OFF, so your body and adjust its internal temperature naturally. Have so much fun!!
I spent my first winter in NYC trying to stay stylish in the cold–think belted wool trench coats, etc.
But in about February I gave up and succumbed, buying a floor length down coat (in black, thank god) with a fur trim on the collar. i looked like i was wearing a sleeping bag but like a lot of other commenters say here, it’s the only way to go! just wow them all when you get to your destination and take the coat OFF!
Those ski socks are fantastic. Nice find! Also, I’m totally stealing those boots for my Christmas list…fingers crossed, right?!
I am an original East-Coaster, now living in LA. You will love NYC at Christmas-time, it is DREAMY! Seriously. You’re definitely on the right track as far as bundling up….I’ve always found that if my extremities are warm, the rest of me will be too! That means, feet, hands, neck and head.
You may want to stock up on some thick tights, too, if you don’t already have some. They are imperative for dresses and skirts, and you can also layer them under jeans for extra warmth.
Oh, and last tip…..make sure you don’t do TOO much shopping before you leave…you’re definitely going to want to save room in your suitcase for the way home!
p.s. It’s been soooo cold this week in LA, but it’s definitely a completely different type of cold on the East Coast. Don’t know how to explain it…..but it’s…not so bad. I don’t know, maybe it has to do with expectations. Ha. Have fun!
I feel your pain! Bundle up and hope you don’t get snowed in!
I love your winter picks! Im so jealous you’ll be in NYC so soon! I would say pick up American Apparel’s thigh highs. They are EXTREMELY warm and would be great for layering over tights for extra warmth. Have a great trip!
Wear lots layers like everyone else has been saying. It makes it a lot easier to go from freezing outside to frying indoors without missing a beat. And on really cold days I sneak those hand warmers you use when you go skiing into my mittens or pockets. They make a world of difference. Enjoy all the lights and gorgeous store windows!
LONG UNDERWEAR. No one will know, and you will stay warm. Last Christmas I went, and I almost froze to death! Also, wear something you can run in for the airport. Traveling east during snow and freezing weather, may cause delays, ( I was a distressed passenger last year because of it). Have fun!
ok, i’m from sf and i lived in montreal for 5 years so i know your pain. and lizzy from the comment above me nailed it: LONG UNDERWEAR!!! the love silk long johns…they are super thin, and breathe so you won’t overheat when you go inside. trust. also cashmere tights are pretty amazeballs if you can find them. have fun!
Oh, you’ll have so much fun! I honestly don’t think the snow could feel that much colder than the last couple mornings we’ve had here.
Right now in CO, it is 10 degrees BELOW zero. Frigid!
I would suggest very warm socks to wear whenever you can, and
Make sure the coat you get is nice and snuggly, I think the best kind is knee-length, and for me the most important is: make sure the sleeve ends in a cuff, or at least a small enough hole that you don’t get long drafts up your arms (not fun).
And of course get a fun color because when it’s cold you will have it on a whole bunch
Love your blog BTW
frillsandfurbelows.blogspot.com
those steve madden ridding boots are awesome. i have them in brown and luv them to death!
http://www.thesocietyofstyle.com
Here in Chicago I’ve learned to invest in a nice pair of warm socks, your feet will thank you. Wear boots that are waterproof and can’t get wet and soak your feet. Cover your ears if need be, you’d be surprised at having one simple part open to the cold air can bother you. Otherwise a nice coat, a sweater underneath, scarves are always welcome, and definitely gloves! Enjoy the cold, if you prepare it can be quite refreshing!
Please go ice skating in Rockerfeller Center for me! It’s a lifetime dream of mine.
I could give you a bevy of advice on cold weather chic since I live in Calgary AB Canada where currently it is -20 degrees…ppl often ask why we even live here. But I can tell you that you can be warm yet fashionable. I would totally invest in a simple black down jacket or long wool jacket in a neutral color just because it is a classic piece that will last through the seasons. Scarves are your best friend, you can always get them in tonnes of colors! And I have always loved hats. Invest in some beanies (also in an array of colors) since they look cute with a winter jacket or without. And to combat the drying effects of the winter wind on your hair, I suggest curling the hair and then when it does get staticky not put water on it to tame it but put some lotion on your hands (the normal amount you would use) and comb through hair, it’ll tame those fly aways. Hope this helps and sending a warm Calgary “Howdy” to all!
I adore that antler cardigan. It’s amazing!
It gets pretty cold in the UK at this time of year, so I tend to stick to knee high socks with tights and boots, long sleeved tees under dresses and scarves, scarves, scarves!!
Hope you enjoy your trip and don’t get too cold!
check this out, and it’s 30% off today only! http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/outerwear/puffers/PRDOVR~19343/19343.jsp
I’m sure you’ll manage to look utterly warm and chic in NYC! Have a fun trip!
These are ultra cute, just be sure to wear plenty of layers underneath everything. I’m in Montana and it seems like I can’t get enough long sleeve shirts on in the morning. Brr!
definitely layer up. 50 layers sounds about right
i’m loving that tartan wool coat though as well as those earmuffs which will come in handy.
I’m from LA and I jusst moved here 3 months ago so I understand how you feel about the weather issue. It’s getting windy here so you need warm scarf, hat. Don’t layer too much because after walking a lot you will get very warm indoors. i suggest wearing a warm wool coat and not wear too much underneath. Also don’t forget hand lotion, it gets super dry.
So jealous, Emily! I’ll be living there soon…we’ll have to hang next time you’re in town!

Layer and invest in one of those teeney Totes umbrellas that fit into your bag easily. I carry mine everyday in NYC and use it in rain and snow. The lights on Saks and snowflake above 5th Ave by Bergdorf are awesome sites, have fun!
make sure to wear boots with traction!! it gets really slippery here!! oh! and also wear a jacket that’s easy to take off…while it may be FREEZING outside, NYC manages to crank the heat up so high inside that it feels like you are in a sauna sometimes!!
Have so much fun!!

Yes bundle up! There is a blizzard in these parts right now. Great choices. You are going to definitely want to dress warm! Love the riding boots by Steve Madden!
I live in PA and can attest to the extreme cold temps we’re currently enduring. Tights and leggings and knee socks are a must. Layers are *key* My winter uniform consists of thick leggings or tights, long sleeved shirts under dresses, a belted cardigan over top (if it’s really cold that day) boots worn with knee socks, and of course a warm knee length coat. Make sure your shoes are both comfortable and waterproof (your adorable red Hunter boots would be an excellent choice) and wear insulated (but cute!) gloves, a scarf (the wind can literally take your breath away!) and a chic warm hat. I love any excuse to wear a hat so a shopping day in NYC is the perfect occasion. Your winter options are fabulous and you will definitely look as such. Have a wonderful visit! There is nothing like Christmas time in NYC
there will come a point where you will need to sacrifice fashion for comfort. that’s okay! i hate wearing my ugly heavy-duty parka and snow boots but that’s what you need to survive in this kind of snow. a wool pea coat will not suffice. make sure your shoes are waterproof and don’t wear heels to walk in the snow, you will kill yourself. and get silk long underwear to wear under pants!
i forgot to mention i’m canadian and our winters are much worse than in New York, so i know what i’m talking about! also, my #1 tip – make sure your coat is long enough to cover your bum.
I’ve been in NYC the last couple days and since it’s supposed to be even colder starting tomorrow, I HIGHLY suggest tights under your pants and a thermal under whatever you’re wearing up top. I wore a russian style faux fur hat that kept me very warm. I would say hat, gloves and scarf a must to keep u warm and prevent you from getting sick! Also, keep in mind that layers are essential bc when you’re indoors, the heat will be cranking and you will get very warm!! Bon Voyage!
ooh, can’t wait to hear about the details! my savior has been knee socks. I’m not one to wear long underwear so my knee socks keeps the majority of my legs warm! (but I am short so knee socks are actually a bit high on me.)
as a So Cal/LA girl myself, I know what you mean about it being under 60 and feeling like I’m in the arctic! the other day I wrote on my blog about how it was raining all day and that winter had finally come to So Cal. well, a reader in Canada who is experiencing negative degree weather and tons of snow basically laughed at me!
I don’t blame her, but I do dream of a white Christmas sometimes. so even though it may be cold, I hope you enjoy your time in NYC!
as for bundling up, I’d say try wearing tights under your pants. when I was in DC for a semester, my peacoat would keep my top half warm but my legs would be freezing!
oh, and I love 3, 5, 6 and 8
The grey embellished gloves look like the perfect accessory addition to be worn in NYC!

I’m in the SF bay area right now, but I’ve also lived in Massachusetts, Shanghai (very wet and cold), and went to college at UCLA so I do have an inkling for how we Californians are rather un-impervious to temperatures below 60 haha! It actually snowed up here in the east bay earlier this week. Anyhow, I believe that the innermost layer is the most important – if you have something not-very-effective on the inside, then whatever you put over it is not going to help. I would recommend getting a thin woolen undershirt and woolen leggings as these will insulate very well. I also have had luck wearing thermal activewear such as the thermal compression tops that Under Armour makes. It is very form-fitting and thin to boot so you won’t feel too bulky with all the other layers you will put on top. Hope that helps!
I live in Montreal, Canada and us Canadians know a thing or two about Winter. As for your coat, a few key things: a 3/4 length coat is key – to make sure your butt is warm, a hood*, that it zips up (to cut the harsh wind), that the sleeve openings are not too big (again because of the wind) and is down-filled. A wool coat just won’t suffice…Other necessities: a HAT that covers your ears, thick scarf, warm gloves or I prefer mitts – they’re warmer (leather is not warm). As for layering – tights AND socks (if your feet freeze it’s all over) and you can wear a tank underneath. Good luck!! xxx
The best advice I ever recieved when I moved from SF to the east coast was to wear leggings under my jeans. It seems silly, but they help cut down on the wind chill factor and if you use cotton they still breath really well, so you wont sweat when you’re inside the way you would with long johns.
Otherwise, lots of layers. tank top, long sleeve, sweater then coat and scarf. It gets easier when you live here and adjust, but its brutal at first! And december in NY isn’t as brital as January in NY will be….
wish list—is that CLOUD UMBRELLA!!
I think it’s much more enjoyable to visit for a few days than to live with the constant cold! Up here in Portland we enjoy mild winters (except this one, apparently). I have enjoyed visiting colder places in the winter, but after a few days the joy slowly fades.
The bright side, you can try some new accessories. Please enjoy your trip and I can’t wait to read about it.

aawww, I want that umbrella. You can’t be sad walking around with it, even on rainy days…
You going to NY for some fashion thing? Cannot wait to find out! Haha. That umbrella is all sorts of awesome, if I do say so myself.

LOVE what you’ve picked…. I live in Chicago where it is super cold and WINDY too…. you’ll be fine as long as it isn’t snowing. When it is windy, an umbrella doesn’t really do a thing except add to your aggravation. Your boots are SUPER cute – I want them! But, they better be waterproof and have a grippy sole. You can usually buy a grippy thingy at your local shoe repair guy to add to the bottom so you aren’t slipping and sliding in all of the ice… embarrassing! Good luck, beautiful!
Of course my favorite piece (the tartan coat) is the most expensive!
I can never get enough of coats in the winter.
I like that Antler Cardigan. A bit pricy, though.

I love to layer my skirts with boots, leggings and over the knee socks. I go to NY every January and have found that this is a good way to stay warm and stylish (I end up usually having to wear 2 pairs of leggings).
Check out my leggings and over the knee socks at http://thesoundoflace.blogspot.com/

I like to layer a skirt, boots and leggings with over the knee socks. Warm and stylish!
I’m from Ohio, so the temperatures drop like crazy. It went from 5o degrees to 13 with a windchill of -3 in 1 day! I would recommend lots of layers. And if your doing a lot of walking outside, those little handwarmer and footwarmer packets are a god send. Good luck and Have fun!
I just ordered this jacket to help brave the harsh winters in WI/MN: http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446240697&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=282574490914679&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395222441&bmUID=1260690156399&ev19=2:25
And you’ll definitely want something cashmere to wrap around your neck, like this: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2815691/0~2376779~6008000~6025603~6026174?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6026174&P=2
It adds all the warmth you’ll need, with none of the bulk.
The only gloves that cut the wind and pass the test in terms of style points are this amazingly soft pair of black leather mittens (they also come in brown) from Nordstrom with a rabbit fur gloved lining. They don’t sell them online, but if you call any Nordstrom in a part of the country that experiences winter you can get them.
Love the blog!!
I’m so not a fan of winter (why I live in a cold weather climate is beyond me!). but at least I can wear cool winter accessories. Love the riding boots & socks
!! Maybe that’ll make winter seem better…
i live on the east coast and i am still not a happy camper about being cold. i think it is dumb. anyways, i really got into the gloves with the finger tips cut off so you can actually use your fingers. you cant use a touch screen phone with big honker gloves on thats for sure. so to this obstacle gloves give you in life, get the fingerless ones. gap makes some cute ones too that have a detatchable mitten part so you can sometimes have your whole fingers covered when your super cold and dont need to use your fingers:) its awesome. hope this helps!
Oh these are brilliant for cold weather. That umbrella is so cheery!
Love the gloves and the boots! And isn’t snowy NYC in the winter simply delicious?!
hi, could you post the article from lucky about those tights, somewhere else? because i never got to see them, the link redirects on its own to lucky’s greek webpage! Thanks a million!
