Snow Day

December 9th, 2009

I’m being flown out to New York next week (details to come soon) and it looks like I’m going to get my first taste of winter.  For us West coast natives, anything under 60° is considered arctic and honestly, I’m not sure how I’m going to survive.  I can’t wait to visit the city during Christmastime, but I’m going to have to do some serious shopping before I leave.  Here are some of my cold weather picks and if you have any advice on layering/bundling, I’d be very appreciative!

I adore that antler cardigan. It’s amazing!

It gets pretty cold in the UK at this time of year, so I tend to stick to knee high socks with tights and boots, long sleeved tees under dresses and scarves, scarves, scarves!!

Hope you enjoy your trip and don’t get too cold!

I’m sure you’ll manage to look utterly warm and chic in NYC! Have a fun trip!

These are ultra cute, just be sure to wear plenty of layers underneath everything. I’m in Montana and it seems like I can’t get enough long sleeve shirts on in the morning. Brr!

definitely layer up. 50 layers sounds about right :) i’m loving that tartan wool coat though as well as those earmuffs which will come in handy.

I’m from LA and I jusst moved here 3 months ago so I understand how you feel about the weather issue. It’s getting windy here so you need warm scarf, hat. Don’t layer too much because after walking a lot you will get very warm indoors. i suggest wearing a warm wool coat and not wear too much underneath. Also don’t forget hand lotion, it gets super dry.

So jealous, Emily! I’ll be living there soon…we’ll have to hang next time you’re in town!

Layer and invest in one of those teeney Totes umbrellas that fit into your bag easily. I carry mine everyday in NYC and use it in rain and snow. The lights on Saks and snowflake above 5th Ave by Bergdorf are awesome sites, have fun!

make sure to wear boots with traction!! it gets really slippery here!! oh! and also wear a jacket that’s easy to take off…while it may be FREEZING outside, NYC manages to crank the heat up so high inside that it feels like you are in a sauna sometimes!!

    Have so much fun!!

Yes bundle up! There is a blizzard in these parts right now. Great choices. You are going to definitely want to dress warm! Love the riding boots by Steve Madden!

I live in PA and can attest to the extreme cold temps we’re currently enduring. Tights and leggings and knee socks are a must. Layers are *key* My winter uniform consists of thick leggings or tights, long sleeved shirts under dresses, a belted cardigan over top (if it’s really cold that day) boots worn with knee socks, and of course a warm knee length coat. Make sure your shoes are both comfortable and waterproof (your adorable red Hunter boots would be an excellent choice) and wear insulated (but cute!) gloves, a scarf (the wind can literally take your breath away!) and a chic warm hat. I love any excuse to wear a hat so a shopping day in NYC is the perfect occasion. Your winter options are fabulous and you will definitely look as such. Have a wonderful visit! There is nothing like Christmas time in NYC :)

there will come a point where you will need to sacrifice fashion for comfort. that’s okay! i hate wearing my ugly heavy-duty parka and snow boots but that’s what you need to survive in this kind of snow. a wool pea coat will not suffice. make sure your shoes are waterproof and don’t wear heels to walk in the snow, you will kill yourself. and get silk long underwear to wear under pants!

  • cee

i forgot to mention i’m canadian and our winters are much worse than in New York, so i know what i’m talking about! also, my #1 tip – make sure your coat is long enough to cover your bum.

  • OlgaTurka

I’ve been in NYC the last couple days and since it’s supposed to be even colder starting tomorrow, I HIGHLY suggest tights under your pants and a thermal under whatever you’re wearing up top. I wore a russian style faux fur hat that kept me very warm. I would say hat, gloves and scarf a must to keep u warm and prevent you from getting sick! Also, keep in mind that layers are essential bc when you’re indoors, the heat will be cranking and you will get very warm!! Bon Voyage!

ooh, can’t wait to hear about the details! my savior has been knee socks. I’m not one to wear long underwear so my knee socks keeps the majority of my legs warm! (but I am short so knee socks are actually a bit high on me.)

  • http://thelovelydove.blogspot.com Carissa

as a So Cal/LA girl myself, I know what you mean about it being under 60 and feeling like I’m in the arctic! the other day I wrote on my blog about how it was raining all day and that winter had finally come to So Cal. well, a reader in Canada who is experiencing negative degree weather and tons of snow basically laughed at me! :) I don’t blame her, but I do dream of a white Christmas sometimes. so even though it may be cold, I hope you enjoy your time in NYC!

as for bundling up, I’d say try wearing tights under your pants. when I was in DC for a semester, my peacoat would keep my top half warm but my legs would be freezing!

    oh, and I love 3, 5, 6 and 8 :)

The grey embellished gloves look like the perfect accessory addition to be worn in NYC!

I’m in the SF bay area right now, but I’ve also lived in Massachusetts, Shanghai (very wet and cold), and went to college at UCLA so I do have an inkling for how we Californians are rather un-impervious to temperatures below 60 haha! It actually snowed up here in the east bay earlier this week. Anyhow, I believe that the innermost layer is the most important – if you have something not-very-effective on the inside, then whatever you put over it is not going to help. I would recommend getting a thin woolen undershirt and woolen leggings as these will insulate very well. I also have had luck wearing thermal activewear such as the thermal compression tops that Under Armour makes. It is very form-fitting and thin to boot so you won’t feel too bulky with all the other layers you will put on top. Hope that helps!

I live in Montreal, Canada and us Canadians know a thing or two about Winter. As for your coat, a few key things: a 3/4 length coat is key – to make sure your butt is warm, a hood*, that it zips up (to cut the harsh wind), that the sleeve openings are not too big (again because of the wind) and is down-filled. A wool coat just won’t suffice…Other necessities: a HAT that covers your ears, thick scarf, warm gloves or I prefer mitts – they’re warmer (leather is not warm). As for layering – tights AND socks (if your feet freeze it’s all over) and you can wear a tank underneath. Good luck!! xxx

  • Laura

The best advice I ever recieved when I moved from SF to the east coast was to wear leggings under my jeans. It seems silly, but they help cut down on the wind chill factor and if you use cotton they still breath really well, so you wont sweat when you’re inside the way you would with long johns.

Otherwise, lots of layers. tank top, long sleeve, sweater then coat and scarf. It gets easier when you live here and adjust, but its brutal at first! And december in NY isn’t as brital as January in NY will be….

    wish list—is that CLOUD UMBRELLA!!

  • http://www.mock-off.com Emily

I think it’s much more enjoyable to visit for a few days than to live with the constant cold! Up here in Portland we enjoy mild winters (except this one, apparently). I have enjoyed visiting colder places in the winter, but after a few days the joy slowly fades.

The bright side, you can try some new accessories. Please enjoy your trip and I can’t wait to read about it.

aawww, I want that umbrella. You can’t be sad walking around with it, even on rainy days…

You going to NY for some fashion thing? Cannot wait to find out! Haha. That umbrella is all sorts of awesome, if I do say so myself.

LOVE what you’ve picked…. I live in Chicago where it is super cold and WINDY too…. you’ll be fine as long as it isn’t snowing. When it is windy, an umbrella doesn’t really do a thing except add to your aggravation. Your boots are SUPER cute – I want them! But, they better be waterproof and have a grippy sole. You can usually buy a grippy thingy at your local shoe repair guy to add to the bottom so you aren’t slipping and sliding in all of the ice… embarrassing! Good luck, beautiful!

Of course my favorite piece (the tartan coat) is the most expensive! :) I can never get enough of coats in the winter.

I like that Antler Cardigan. A bit pricy, though.

I love to layer my skirts with boots, leggings and over the knee socks. I go to NY every January and have found that this is a good way to stay warm and stylish (I end up usually having to wear 2 pairs of leggings).

I’m from Ohio, so the temperatures drop like crazy. It went from 5o degrees to 13 with a windchill of -3 in 1 day! I would recommend lots of layers. And if your doing a lot of walking outside, those little handwarmer and footwarmer packets are a god send. Good luck and Have fun!

I just ordered this jacket to help brave the harsh winters in WI/MN: http://www.saksfifthavenue.com/main/ProductDetail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524446240697&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=282574490914679&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395222441&bmUID=1260690156399&ev19=2:25

And you’ll definitely want something cashmere to wrap around your neck, like this: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/2815691/0~2376779~6008000~6025603~6026174?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6026174&P=2

It adds all the warmth you’ll need, with none of the bulk.

The only gloves that cut the wind and pass the test in terms of style points are this amazingly soft pair of black leather mittens (they also come in brown) from Nordstrom with a rabbit fur gloved lining. They don’t sell them online, but if you call any Nordstrom in a part of the country that experiences winter you can get them.

    Love the blog!!

I’m so not a fan of winter (why I live in a cold weather climate is beyond me!). but at least I can wear cool winter accessories. Love the riding boots & socks :) !! Maybe that’ll make winter seem better…

  • Natalie

i live on the east coast and i am still not a happy camper about being cold. i think it is dumb. anyways, i really got into the gloves with the finger tips cut off so you can actually use your fingers. you cant use a touch screen phone with big honker gloves on thats for sure. so to this obstacle gloves give you in life, get the fingerless ones. gap makes some cute ones too that have a detatchable mitten part so you can sometimes have your whole fingers covered when your super cold and dont need to use your fingers:) its awesome. hope this helps!
