Simple Moments

{With my boyfriend on top of Mount Tam}

I think it’s oddly more acceptable to complain about the trivial things that bother you than it is to take note of special little moments throughout the day.   It’s even perpetuated by a lack of naming conventions since there’s no antonym of “pet peeve” in the dictionary (and yes, I checked).   Until there’s a word that describes those simple things that make you smile, I’ve compiled a list of my top ten.

1. When my favorite song is playing on the radio as soon as I start the car.
2. When I find money in my pockets that I had forgotten about.
3. When I’m not feeling well and realize I have absolutely nowhere to be.
4. When my mom mispronounces technological devices.*
5. When drivers thank me for letting them pass or turn in front of me.
6. When I untangle a stubbornly knotted necklace.
7. When I catch my boyfriend smiling at me sweetly for no reason.
8. When I dress perfectly for temperamental weather.
9. When I climb under covers that have been freshly washed.
10. When the lights first dim at the beginning of a movie.

What are the little things that make you happy?

*She lost her iPod Shuffle a few days ago at the gym and (jokingly) considered describing it as a silver, miniature music box.

Those are such a sweet note of special little moments ….I always try to make a mental note of those things…What makes me happy…?…My dogs , morning sun on my balcony, jazz music that I play while I am working, Balazs always makes me happy and cupcakes….yummy…:)
Have a wonderful weekend my dear and relax a lot!

HaHa your mom must be so much fun.. to be honest I agree with all of your points… they make me very happy too!
I could add
- not having to wake up for an alarm on the weekends
- the smell of freshly baked goods
- waiting for your new posts in the morning…
- and many many more… :)

Thanks for this reminder on a particularly awful day!
Have a wonderful weekend babe!

Sometimes when things are particularly hard and they’re out of my control, I always turn to the little things that make me happy–it’s the only thing that makes me feel better. I love your little list. It’s full of awesomeness.

little things that make me happy: when my mom comes on skype so I can say hi to her (disadvantage of living half a world apart is serious time differences), when my hair looks great in the morning even though I went to bed with it wet and unbrushed, when you post on your blog (I seriously wait for it to come up on my google reader all day), and I have you agree with your boyfriend one as well, that’s the best, isn’t it?

Someone once told me “Nobody has a ticket in their back pocket for tomorrow.” So we must appreciate the little things each day… Like our favorite song on the radio and a smile from across the room~
Happy Friday!
Cheers!

i could say all of yours but i particularly agree with number 3 and 4 (my mom still says a lazer for a CD, well in french it’s quite uncommon! i always laugh so much when she says that, and i laughed for the description of the ipod too!)

9 kara lynn { 08.20.10 at 1:28 am }

rain on a tin roof

listening to a certain song, and a thought comes to mind, and i start crying in gratitude and happiness

cuddling in a micro-fleece blanket

nature. large mountains. and deep green trees

just a few. thanks for you list!! =]

Aw… this picture of you and your boyfriend is adorable!!! Frame it!
I’ll add…
1. enjoying a hot mug of favorite tea
2. smelling the aroma of freshly baked cookies as you walk into mom’s kitchen
and…
3. you doggie or kitty meeting you at the front door when you get home from work to your list of happy little things :)

12 Lindsey Anne { 08.20.10 at 1:54 am }

I’ve actually started a list of these things too and I’ll glance at them when I’m frustrated. My top three:

1. How easy it is to smell the fragrance of the garden as it drifts through my open window at night.

2. Savoring a cup of chamomile tea in a moment of solitude before going to bed.

3. The way I can feel autumn and winter in the air – it’s cool and crisp yet it also feels warm and welcoming because I know the season brings all the people I love together for celebrations and the holidays.

Btw, I’ve also come to appreciate the way my mom (mis)pronounces robot and hippopotamus! Gotta love those little things : )

13 Céline { 08.20.10 at 2:01 am }

Such a great list. I must ad:
- landing a new trick with skiing
- sitting on the balcony of my apartment in the alps with a desperado’s and nothing to do but enjoying the view over the mountain tops
xo.

aww what a wonderful picture.

18 Lauren { 08.20.10 at 2:45 am }

The picture of you and you’re boyfriend is perfect. I love it when your capturing a moment or emotion in a photo rather than just a posed cheesy smile one. This one of the two of you needs a frame :)

I’m definitely having one of those weeks where things aren’t going my way. Some of the things you listed put a smile on my face because they are things that make me feel better too.

I love when I find an amazing purchase and it was something I wasn’t even looking for.

When I turn on the TV and a channel is playing one of my favorite movies.

When my cat cuddles with me on my bed.

I’m an artist, and every so often I will get a burst of inspiration out of nowhere, and create something amazing as a result. It’s a great feeling of accomplishment.

19 Café Bellini { 08.20.10 at 3:03 am }

What a cute list, your mum is sweet! Croissants make me very happy :-) And anything Chanel!

20 Alyssa { 08.20.10 at 3:06 am }

24 Martacurrl { 08.20.10 at 3:38 am }

Sweet:) I really love when I see the boy I love, when he is smiling or when he says “hi” to me. This moments are simple, but very important.

25 Vik { 08.20.10 at 3:44 am }

- finding a cheap and wonderful dress in second hand
- getting flowers from my boyfriend – just to make me smile
- after terrible day stay at home, have some wine and snacks, talk a bit, read a bit
- get an email from a friend living far away
- tell my father some crazy ideas and hear “sure, do that!”
- go to church on Sundays and enjoy the feeling of relief and peace afterwards

28 Gina Michele { 08.20.10 at 4:13 am }

I love that picture of you and your boyfriend. It’s so sweet!
That first sip of coffee in the morning makes me happy. Also, getting packages delivered (after online shopping). It makes me feel like a kid on Christmas morning =D

29 Kate { 08.20.10 at 4:19 am }

let’s see:
1) after a long day at work, being welcomed by my little dog as though my arrival is the most exciting, wonderful moment of her day, every day.
2) sleeping in and enjoying a leisurely morning: cooking myself a huge breakfast and wearing my pajamas til noon.
3) catching up and laughing with an old friend
4) chocolate. preferably dark. also: a really great homemade cookie, cupcake, frozen yogurt, gelato, I could go on…

30 Kristen { 08.20.10 at 4:22 am }

This is so true! Sometimes we forget to take a moment of gratitude in all of the crazy hustle of life.

My happy moments include having time in the morning to drink coffee and watch cooking shows with my boyfriend, getting a call from a friend I haven’t talked to in a long time, and having conversations with my little sister that make me realize how lovely she has grown up to be!

31 Style and Coffee { 08.20.10 at 4:41 am }

When I’m driving I love to see how the cars turn on or of their lights when they go into/out the tunnels

32 Jam { 08.20.10 at 4:42 am }

I’m totally going to turn my list into a post. Thanks for the positive inspiration :)

Great list! I always smile when I see old people exercising. I’m also uplifted whenever I see someone playing with their dog.

36 Filiz { 08.20.10 at 4:58 am }

1) Waking up to the person you love most every morning.
2) The feelings of accomplishment and satisfaction after trivial tasks such as; cleaning, working out, writing in your journal or blog, etc.
3) Thinking your house smells good when you walk in the door.
4) A new manicure or pedicure blissfulness.

37 Jennifer - Stylish Clin d'Oeil { 08.20.10 at 5:06 am }

Lovely list of simple moments. For me, what i like is when i hear the rain on the roof and on the windows when i’m in my bed: it’s perfect to sleep and to have a good night!!^^

38 CC { 08.20.10 at 5:08 am }

Just wanted to let you know that your blog is my favorite EVER! You have such positive energy, and I love your style and baking recipes! (I love fashion and baking also.) Please continue what you’re doing!

39 Lindsay { 08.20.10 at 5:11 am }

You are so right! It’s easy to get caught up in life and forget about the little things that make you happy. I agree with you: I love sliding into freshly washed sheets too. One of my faves. Have a great weekend!

-Lindsay
http://cubiclechicblog.com

40 erin { 08.20.10 at 5:13 am }

yes, indeed. the littlest things are the very best. freshly changed sheets, towels warm from the dryer, waking up long before my alarm is supposed to go off, and snuggling back for a few more hours of sleep. a few of my favorites.

41 bridget { 08.20.10 at 5:25 am }

hashbrowns or basically the smell of cooking onions… and yes, fresh laundered sheets! ooh and a cup of coffee. or glass of wine.

42 Lisa { 08.20.10 at 5:28 am }

I love the one about your mom (: My mom’s so bad with technology, she thought taking pictures on her cell phone cost money!

-Waking up for school when it’s light out
-Full moons
-Getting a solo just right
-Getting an A on a paper or project
-Meeting new people
-Painted toenails
-A clean purse (!)

43 Jen Smith { 08.20.10 at 5:34 am }

Things to add…
1. When I make someone smile that’s having a bad day.
2. When someone says they are proud of me.
3. Getting to a register to check out only to find out the item that you are buying is even CHEAPER than you thought it was going to be. :)

Have a great weekend!

49 Alex { 08.20.10 at 6:00 am }

1. reading the last page of a really good book
2. catching up with old friends on the phone
3. tart fro yo w/ choc chips
4. successfully spending a day in high heels!

50 April { 08.20.10 at 6:03 am }

I adore freshly washed sheets and a freshly made bed. I tell my boyfriend he’s not allowed to come home from work and jump into the bed (which is something he tends to do on a weekly basis) because I love the feeling of a fresh bed even if it only lasts a few days and he obliges. Since I discovered your blog (quite by accident) I have been in love with it. I have used some of your recipes (much to my boyfriend’s delight), started my exercise regime, worked on little things around the house that I’ve been meaning to do and re-discovered my love for fashion, antiques and the unusual. I guess you could say I had been living in a rut for the past three months (work, study, work, study) and your blog has definately cheered me up and given me some motivation and drive. Thanks Emily!

51 Lin { 08.20.10 at 6:14 am }

What a great post! It’s way too easy to get negative about everyday’s little annoyances. #1-3, 5- 7 are also on my list! And that’s the sweetest photo of you and your bf :]

http://clandestinecraves.wordpress.com

52 Cara { 08.20.10 at 6:14 am }

Thanks for sharing! Here are mine:
1.Waking up to a crisp morning with the windows open and fan on while the sun is barely coming up.
2. Finding that ‘have to have’ piece of clothing in my size on sale!
3. Dates with my husband.
4. Sharing a glass of wine while cooking with my husband and chatting about the day.
5. September issues.
6. Church

53 Vivian { 08.20.10 at 6:16 am }

This is a great list Emily! Things that also make me smile:
*When our chihuahua Chloe comes and chooses to snuggle with me and gives me lots of love. *When I get carded still (even for the Lotto – I mean the age for that is only 18!) * When I paint my own fingernails and manage to let them fully dry without getting any nicks or smudges. * When a new recipe works perfectly and it tastes so delicious!

Happy Friday!

Thank you Emily for reminding me of the sweet things in life.
I love laughing so hard with my girlfriends on our monthly phone call, I love coming home to a bed that was made very sweetly by my boyfriend, I love hugging my grandma, I love blaring my favorite music out of my car while driving around town and I love making baked goods that people can’t stop talking about after they try it!

61 patricia { 08.20.10 at 6:29 am }

amazing! i’d never given attention to the lights at the beginning of a movie. you’re so right (:

62 Rachel { 08.20.10 at 6:31 am }

Such a good Friday post! The little things that make me happy I would have to say are seeing my nephews face light when I come home for a visit, reading a really good book, and taking lloonngg naps during a rainy/cold day. Have a wonderful weekend!!

63 amanda blair { 08.20.10 at 6:35 am }

This is the sweetest picture… major aww. That dress is so Zoe it’s bananas. I think this might be my favorite post because it really is the little things in life. Some of mine are..
1.When the Subway passes by and you get that first gust of wind blowing your hair.
2. Every single time I catch a glimpse of the Chrysler building
3. A mid-afternoon nap
4. When you walk through the door, realized it just started raining and you have nowhere to be.
5. Those lazy nights/morning/afternoons with girlfriends, where you just sit around talking and laughing endlessly.

64 Becca { 08.20.10 at 6:43 am }

Such a sweet picture!

Isn’t it odd that there’s no word for the opposite of pet peeve? I think I may call them “pet reprieve’s” (meaning something that always makes you stop and smile, a reprieve from the day!).

My top 3:

1. Sticking my feet under the covers to that cool spot.
2. That first sip of coffee in the morning – the one where I inadvertently “ahhh” like I’m on a Folger’s commercial.
3. The feeling after I leave work on a Friday.

Becca

65 Lauren { 08.20.10 at 6:45 am }

Wow that picture is friggin’ adorable. And your boyfriend’s style is so cute! Love it. This is a lovely post, and I love how everyone is sharing theirs! Some of mine, in no particular order:
1. Finally understanding my younger brother. Now he’s my favorite person in the world.
2. The freedom to sleep in on a rainy day. (One can dream!)
3. Complimenting strangers on the street.
4. When I come back to my parent’s house and my dog figures out who I am. The movement of her tiny body as she wags her tail kills me every time.
5. Reading magazines! I love reading magazines. So. Much.

Love your post! It made my morning a little better…

I’d add two little things:

- waking up with my little black cat asking for my attention
- look up the sky and see how wonderfully blue it is…

:)

When your adult child allows a great big kiss on the cheek!

69 Cyrillynn { 08.20.10 at 6:54 am }

That’s a great list! Here are a couple of mine:

- Walking into a stadium either for the first time ever, or when you are about to watch your favorite team play
- When my son comes up to me, hugs me and kisses me for no reason

70 Ira { 08.20.10 at 7:00 am }

What a wonderful post!

I have always been a believer that it is the simple things in life that count and make you the happiest.

Here is my list:
-Sunsets, sea, and rainbow
-Butterflies
-My boyfriend that makes me feel like the luckiest girl in the world every day
-My dad coming to visit (he lives in Europe)
-Meeting new people everywhere in the world and getting to know a little but about their way of life
-Cupcakes and Cashmere
-Being helpful and kind to everybody because as Plato said: “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle”.

71 The Boob Nazi { 08.20.10 at 7:01 am }

72 Nicole { 08.20.10 at 7:01 am }

Getting an email or a message on facebook
Or even better… getting a real letter

Buying myself cheap flowers at trader joe’s and watching them bloom

Blasting rap in my car really loud before going out (and feeling like I am in high school)

Cupcakes!

73 Roya { 08.20.10 at 7:13 am }

I love this list. I make little lists like this on my phone or iPod or wherever I can write it down. They’d start “Happiness is…” , because to me happiness is best found in the little moments.

74 Nikki { 08.20.10 at 7:16 am }

Fresh sheets on the bed is one of the best feelings in the entire world!!
Some of my other favorites are:
1. Getting home to my dog Buddy. He is always, always happy to see me
2. Tuesday evening yoga classes
3. Getting comments on my lame little blog
4. Getting something really good on sale
5. Surprises from my husband
6. Hearing from my best friend who is in Africa in the Peace Corps
7. Getting in bed really really early after a long, hard day
8. Going on vacation
9. Leaving work on Friday afternoon
10. Getting the newest magazines and spending a lazy afternoon reading them

And of course, new posts from Cupcakes and Cashmere!!

75 Sarah { 08.20.10 at 7:21 am }

Watching old movies with my husband, snuggled on the couch with a bowl of popcorn (our favorite is Topper with Cary Grant).

Early morning sunshine (the earlier, the better – I love it when it’s light at 4:30 am in VT in the summer)

Orange blossoms

Reading in the Bathtub

Convertibles and blue sky days.

4. An adorable vintage find (i.e. clothes, records, jewlery, art)
5. The feeling I get after watching a really great film

What an adorable picture – and lovely to see the boyfriend on here too.

I absolutely think it’s the small pleasures which make each day more enjoyable, and constantly find enjoyment in them. For me it’s a beaming smile from a stranger or helping someone when they least expect it, a big hot cup of Earl Grey tea, having time to just sit on the sofa with a new magazine or good book, hugs from my boyfriend, and the beautiful changes in the seasons.

I like hearingthe orchestra tuning up before a musical or concert.

94 sharlyn { 08.20.10 at 8:48 am }

those are all perfect. those little things are half of what life is about! thanks for sharing!

95 Michelle E { 08.20.10 at 8:49 am }

Ahh this made me smile :) I never thought about it but I do love when the lights dim at a movie. There’s such an excitement/anticipation of greatness. Also such a satisfying feeling when there’s crazy weather but you have the perfect outfit on for it. :) Thanks for this!

96 StyleCake { 08.20.10 at 8:51 am }

I pretty much love all of those things too, especially the part about my boyfriend smiling at me sweetly for no reason. So sweet!

97 Jen { 08.20.10 at 8:52 am }

That’s a pretty great list :) I love my first sip of a Dr. Pepper. It’s a magical moment where everything seems right in the world!

98 Maria { 08.20.10 at 9:00 am }

when some article of clothing that is way too expensive that you have been eying goes incredibly on sale and miraculously there is only one size left and its yours :)

99 Fit & Fab Mama { 08.20.10 at 9:08 am }

What a great list! Some of the things I love include..

* relaxing with a good book and a great cup of coffee or tea
* enjoying a summer thunderstorm from our porch
* watching my little girls sleep

100 Jessie { 08.20.10 at 9:14 am }

Ooh, I love this game!

My “pet reprieves” (to copy a clever commenter above):

Seeing dolphins swim by in the ocean
Thunderstorms
A pint of big fresh blueberries
The smell of freshly mown grass and rain
Finding my favorite out-of-state beer in a local store
Listening to Peter Gabriel
When I reach the end of my commute, top the hill and coast down to my house by the beach – the view makes all the work worries melt away
Seeing my boyfriend’s picture come up when he calls my phone
Finding a book I’ve been dying to read at the library
Kittens! in any way, shape or form
A glass of perfectly crisp viognier drunk alongside sauteed zucchini, shaved parmesan and freshly ground black pepper

Man, I could go on forever, but now I’m craving zucchini, so I’m off to the store!

101 Lelia { 08.20.10 at 9:23 am }

I love when my mom calls on my work phone and I know it’s her before I answer, and the smell of rain in the summertime.

102 Samantha Dudley { 08.20.10 at 9:26 am }

The picture of you and your boy friend is so cute!
Your list was quite inspiring, i’m so busy all the time i rarely consider the little things.

emily..
do tell us how you met your boyfriend ….:)

104 Elizabeth { 08.20.10 at 9:40 am }

Reading through the commentators above, I was struck how many of us used the phrase “the little things.” Even though it’s not overtly positive, the cultural connotations wrap it in sunshine. That’s how I will be describing my favorite “little things”:

This blog of course!!
Sunshine
Trees rustling, one of my favorite sounds because it kind of reminds me of the shore
Sleeping with the windows open (in summer)
Starting a new book by a favorite author, combining anticipation and certainty of satisfaction
That thrill when a song come on the radio that is totally new to you and that you love . . . I first heard “Bloodbuzz Ohio” that way, and “Dog Days Are Over”
Dogs of course! Practically everything about dogs is wonderful. I love when our littlest dog rests his head on me
I take some of my favorite poetry with me on trips. When I am stressed, I read a short bit by AC Swinburne or Amy Lowell and I am transported into a calm place
I have to add . . . great creamy coffee and a decadent crumbly piece of dessert
People who smile at you, sometimes quite randomly
I also love the much-anticipated moment when the house lights go down in a theater

105 Could I Have That { 08.20.10 at 9:40 am }

i have so many don’t even know where to start…
getting an unexpected hug from my boyfriend
coming home on the day my house cleaner has been there
when something i’ve been craving goes on sale… in my size
when something funny unexpectedly happens and you can’t stop laughing…

106 Le 21ème Arrondissement { 08.20.10 at 9:45 am }

Cute, Em! Mill Valley love!

107 Kristie { 08.20.10 at 9:46 am }

Some things that make my heart sing:
- spending time with myself, listening and soaking up the world
- tremendous friends mixed with wine and summer evenings
- new leather journals that already feel like home
- writing that flows from beyond me
- an epiphany realized and smile suddenly felt
- my own dance party in front of a mirror
- an amazing pen of ink
- recognizing an old friend
- body-aching, eye-watering laughter

Thanks for sharing! It’s easy to forget about the good stuff, even if they’re simple and wonderful.

113 Brooklynn { 08.20.10 at 10:41 am }

Being a college student, I don’t have much time in the morning to properly get ready for the day. But when I have time to sit down, enjoy breakfast and my morning coffee, it just makes my day. :)

Also, having or making yummy desserts like cupcakes and sharing them with friends without the worry of calories or carbs.

Have you ever read The Book of Awesome? It’s full of sweet little things like this. There’s a blog for it, too (http://1000awesomethings.com/)! Reading other people’s lists of things that make them smile, and realizing everyone basically loves the same sort of things, always makes me smile. :)

Oh my god you and your boyf are disgustingly cute in that photo. It is just too romantic and sweet. And the little sweet things in my life that make me smile?

Chocolate chip pancakes made by my sister

When my mom kisses my forehead in the morning before she leaves for work

The way my puppy follows me around aimlessly

The way my boyf looks at me for no reason (I love that feeling, too) and when he offers to blowdry my hair when I’m too lazy to do it myself

You of my favorite things also has to do with my own mothers cute little quirks. When she leaves me a voicemail she ends it always the same. She says, ” Love you ,”(pause) “Mom.” Just like a letter, it’s pretty cute.

And ditto on our pets meeting us a the front door, tails wagging back and forth…. it’s pretty great.

This is a great list, and one that really helps me right now personally as I am freshly post-final and really worried about how I did! I need to think about the little good things. And speaking of a name…maybe little-happinesses? It’s a tricky one. Mine are:

1. When my boyfriend and I call/text each other at the exact same time, especially since we’re doing long distance and it’s sweet to know we’re thinking about each other at the exact same time.
2. When my dog rushes over and nose-butts me when I’m crying or upset.
3. When people offer their cart or parking space to you as they’re leaving.
4. Cold rinses at the end of the shower.
5. Hearing French around me…I’m in Western Canada and it’s my first language, so it’s a rare occurrence but an exciting one!
6. Biking downhill without a helmet on on a nice summer afternoon.
7. When I find something that’s perfect for me and am fully willing to pay full price for it, then taking it to the till and finding out it’s on sale.
8. When people flash their highbeams at you if you’re on a long stretch of road and cops are doing speed checks up ahead.
9. Anytime anyone says has a good day and it’s not part of the script they’re supposed to say for work (check-out clerks, etc).
10. After swimming in the ocean (especially when it’s cold), the feeling of sun hitting your body as you dry out on the beach.

Love Alexandra

First off, the photo of you and your boyfriend is adorable!
Some of my favorite things include:

1. Running late to work and making it on time because for some reason all of the lights turn green.
2. Buying the person behind me’s drink in the Starbucks line or paying the fare for someone when crossing the Bay Bridge.
3. When my Ipod is on shuffle and the perfect song comes on.
4. Getting packages in the mail.
5. Compliments from strangers. For some reason, these seem more special to me. I think it may be because they have no idea who you, and they go out of their way to brighten your day a little.

Emily, I really enjoyed this post!

5. Having absolutely nothing to do :)

What are the little things that make me happy?
1. Sun rise. I love how it shines on me that makes my skins glow, blood running to warm up the body. Its like, ahhh, another happy day!

3. Comfortably in pajamas on a Sunday morning with coffee on table and magazines on your lap.
There are lots. Basically is just, appreciation. When you appreciate something, it just makes you feel happy.

Things that make me happy are just holding my boyfriends hand, playing with my cats, finding something amazing to blog about, buying some clothes or shoes or something that I really love, watching my favourite TV shows and movies… Just little simple things :)

Your blog is so beautiful! I love your thoughtful posts! I get pretty happy when I can take a few hours to read a favorite book, watch “30 Rock” in bed, eat at a favorite restaurant, catch up on my DVR, score an awesome item on sale and enjoy a huge laugh with a family member or friend. So true that the little things make a big difference!

Number 2 is always a good one. Just yesterday, I found $25 in a pair of jeans. My mom sometimes wakes me up with breakfast. Good food always brings a smile to my face. And that jumper is so cute. I’ve been wanting a romper, but I haven’t found one that looks good on me without costing like $200 and up.

Simple Pleasures.
That’s what I’ll call em … :) maybe advertising reeled me into the terminology, I do enjoy the detergent very much!
I enjoy reading your blog very much. It’s on my bloglovin list, and my most frequented blog. Fresh, classy, simple ideas. Love the coral lipstick! I bought some shortly after and have quite enjoyed it… it was my introduction into colored lipstick, I usually stick with glosses, balms, etc.

I read this post a few days ago and have been thinking about it ever since. I have been thinking so much about the little things since I tend to obsess about things that I wish I could change or things that I can’t always control it is wonderful to have a reminder about the things that I love and just make me happy. Lately most of my happy moments involve my new baby girl – like when she smiles when I go to pick her up or hearing her little protests when we do something that she doesn’t like (like when we just don’t move fast enough for her and she wants to go out! the girl has personality!), hearing my husband talk to her when I’m in the other room, watching her look at every little thing with so much wonder, catching my husband looking at us with a smile on his face…the smell and feel of a fresh manicure, sleeping with the windows open on the first warm night and feeling the breeze on my face, the first sound of a cicada in summer, the feeling of my feet sinking in the sand when the surf goes back out after a wave, fresh sheets, falling asleep to the sound of rain, the quiet that seems to fall over everything during a snow storm, finding a parking space right in front of my building, not getting a ticket when I haven’t paid the meter, having a train arrive just when you go through the turnstyle, being in the middle of a really good book, when a song that I haven’t heard in a long time comes up randomly on a playlist, driving with the windows down, looking at photographs on my couch or in album rather than online, speaking of which – looking through old albums and smiling and laughing at memories…there are so many!

thanks for reminding me of all of these wonderful things…I bet I’m going to keep thinking of them!

I absolutely adore simple, pleasurable moments. A few of mine: when it starts ouring rain and I am at home cuddled up with my husband, eating an ice cream cone, long morning chats with my mother, sunday morning breakfast in bed, watching Mystic Pizza (for the umpteenth time) while eating pizza, my baby kicking and letting me know that he will be ready to make his debut soon, a fresh cup of hot tea in a white mug, fresh flowers in every room of my home.

I totally agree! We need to recognize the good things in life more often.
I would add swinging on a swingset. And buying something on sale that you’ve had your eye on!

I love it when my mom mispronounces words.

Mom: She retarded
Me: You mean she RETIRED right?
Mom: Yeah, thats how I said it, retarded.

208 Heaven { 01.19.11 at 3:14 pm }

…mmm I love it when my husband pulls me back into bed to sleep in and my dog snuggles down on the other side of me to pin me in. As long as those two love me nothing is wrong with the world.
