Shimmering Wall

Since I work from home, and spend nearly ten hours a day in my office, it’s crucial for me to keep the decor inspiring and fun.   The pink walls help brighten things up (I used Benjamin Moore’s “Romantic Pink”), but I had a huge space that had been left empty since we moved in.  It was too large (and expensive) to fill with art, so I decided to try something a little different.  I had been lusting after Confetti System’s Tassel Garland for a while and finally bought one for myself.  It creates such a playful, whimsical feel and brings the entire space to life.

Do you have any tips for decorating large, empty walls?

This is really pretty… I’ve been looking for the big photobooth type paintings for the wall as see in The Joneses…. very cool and perfect for decorating large empty wall spaces! :)

Wow – it is like a disco wall!

I love your blog and inspirational finds. I love filling walls with framed vintage maps of places I have been with my boyfriend and friends/family (although provokes day dreaming of happy memories so beware it causes a great distraction!)

Happy Thursday

What a cute idea! I’ve been wanting to frame old Vogue covers and hang a bunch on a large wall in my apt.

9 Jen Tarte { 01.27.11 at 1:05 am }

That’s such a gorgeous and unique way of filling up space! I agree with the comment above! Vintage maps sounds like such a good idea. Definitely going to be stealing that idea for future reference!

How very pretty :) I usually save up and buy a print I like – it takes time but I am slowly filling my house with images I love. At the moment I have my eye on an old wartime rationing poster. One of the cheapest was some old sheet music I found from the 30s, which I got put into an old frame I alreadty had. The whole thing cost less than £10.

I love the garland! As for any tips, I have always wanted a huge map of the world, possibly as a plaque or a mural in non-traditional colors (grays and beige, for example).

13 Ally { 01.27.11 at 1:11 am }

I definitely have the same problem~ a large empty wall, but it’s in my kitchen. My plan is to buy two floating shelves from Pottery Barn and do a gallery wall, with art (mostly from etsy with my budget), personal photos, etc. in mismatched frames leaning against the wall. Other small pieces and objets will be on the depth of the shelves to complete the look. It’s my New Years resolution but I haven’t quite started yet! You’ve inspired me though! The garland is darling.

Advice for decorating huge empty walls: Simplicity sometimes does the trick. I use for myself a guide of “less is more.” I hung a small canvas on an open space wall. The painting itself was very detailed, bright and inspiring. It was enough for that big spacious wall I had in my last apartment. Try it out and let me know if it works for your office!

29 Gabriella { 01.27.11 at 1:44 am }

I’d never thought about decorating a wall this way before! (But let me tell you, it looks gorgeous!)
For big empty walls I would either hang a big piece of art (maybe not an original at first, but a good print does the trick for the time), or a lot of pictures (of something you like, be it out of a book, magazine or your own photography) of the same size put in the same frames hung next and above eachother (make a big square), or floating shelves. I love Jovians idea too though!

30 Miyan { 01.27.11 at 1:47 am }

This is such a great idea to create a fun environment! To decorate a large, empty wall I had in my bedroom, I bought really cute, hand- painted towel hangers and hung my necklaces from them. So my jewelry collection hangs in my empty space =)

31 Marie { 01.27.11 at 1:48 am }

That’s a great idea and I have to agree it looks great against the pale pink walls. For inexpensive wall decoration I like to use framed mirrors, prints and pictures of different sizrs arranged in an almost organized collage.

Love the garland! I’ve framed some old Vogue and Elle magazine covers with cheap frames from Ikea and they look really good and it was also inexpensive! Happy Decorating! xx

35 Gixxer { 01.27.11 at 2:27 am }

DIY bulliten board: if you cant find an old one that you can take the inside out of, then the hardware store has plenty of wainscoting material that you can knock a frame up yourself. Paint it matt white and frame a sheet of ply board you’ve padded the same way you re-did those chairs. Finish it off with an awesome vintage fabric and use it for pinning pictures/prints/ inspiration etc. You could even do a collection with different complimentary or contrasting fabrics. One for a print, the other for a ‘to do’ etc. It could be like an installation; no paper, but put more 3D objects stuck to the wall with the ‘empty’ frame around it.

36 el {what you fancy} { 01.27.11 at 2:29 am }

I like it… it’s always nice to see a bit of unexpected sparkle :) I find another way of filling up a large blank wall is a huge vintage clock, which doesn’t have to break the bank…

Emily, at my house I put fabric at my wall (well, I bout a cotton fabric). You can see ir here: http://www.diadesaltoalto.com/2010/09/casa-nova-colando-tecido-na-parede.html

I wrote in Portuguese, but you can see the pics.
The good think about fabric in the wall is: the place becomes more confortable = ) The wall looks good and you can rang something simple and it will look great!

Hope you like it!

Have you thought about framed prints and posters? On Amazon there is a tasteful collection of posters which come framed which would update any large space relatively cheaply. I have a vintage film advertisement from the Italian release of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Its fake, but still look amazing on my wall!

66 LaTisha { 01.27.11 at 5:24 am }

I could totally see some vintage art or framed photos of Audrey Heburn (you remind me of her). Z. Gallerie is another fantastic place to look for those knick knacks to hang on your wall.
Pictures of famous landmarks are fantastic also (i.e. Eiffel Tower).

130$ ???!!!! You got ripped off. I could’ve made that by walking around town and robbing 5 year old cheerleaders of there pompoms and ripping the majority of the material off . Then swinging by home depot and buying some wire to tie it on. JOKE

You could always take different size canvas- bought at a local art store, paint them different colors/designs and almost create your own huge wall of art, for cheap!

84 Gab { 01.27.11 at 6:33 am }

Hi Emily
I have a tip!
Try making a full wall clock! They are really cool and inexpensive. Print out sticker numbers at a print shop in all different fonts and buy a clock dial.
If that seems confusing, I saw it on Sarah 101, a design show.
Here is the link: http://www.hgtv.ca/sarah101/episodes.aspx?sectionid=432&categoryid=4976351129275603882&postid=195858

I did something similar to make up for a lack of a headboard in my bedroom–I strung up some pretty ribbon the length of my bed, then attached pretty handmade greeting cards I bought in India with clothespins. It fills up the wall nicely!

89 lindsay c { 01.27.11 at 6:40 am }

super cute and might be fun to try to DIY!
My best tip for covering a large wall on the cheap is to stretch fabric over a wood canvas frame. IKEA has great inexpensive fabrics, or using one of Urban Outfitters’ tapestries works just as well– the key is to get an upholstery weight fabric so it doesnt look cheap. Buy the wooden canvas stretcher pieces at an art supply store, snap ‘em together into a frame, staple gun the fabric around the back edges, and you have an amazingly easy way to spruce up a boring white wall.
Love your blog!! And would LOVE LOVE to see your wedding planning progress, perhaps on an offshoot of the blog?? I think there would be huge appeal! (and of course being engaged myself I’d love to get more awesome ideas… )

oh well done, I love what they do and as you spend so much time there it’s a brilliant idea!

93 Stine { 01.27.11 at 6:52 am }

What about painting something directly on the wall? You can use a projector to see how it looks on the wall, then trace it and paint. I would definitely do that on my big white walls if I didn’t rent this place.

I adore your blog. Love from London.

94 Kristin { 01.27.11 at 6:54 am }

I love your blog! My favorite idea to fill a wall is to write a favorite quote, or the opening lines to a favorite book, or the lyrics to a favorite song, using block letter stencils. I once saw a photo spread of Molly Sims’s apartment, and she had huge paintings that were just block-letter quotes (I wish I could remember the name of the artist). I thought it was a fabulous idea. The fourth photo down on this blog link shows one of the paintings: http://www.krislynblog.com/2009/09/inspiration-molly-sims-home.html

Confetti System stole my heart the first time I saw it a while back. I love that you are using their garland as a daily decor staple. So very whimsical!

About a week ago I posted about decor ideas using fashion. Check it out here:

I’m still on the hunt for a great deal on a vintage beaded number I can frame. This idea would work great for you, the ultimate fashionista! Or a collection of (cheap but beautiful) vintage costume jewelry you can find when thrifting or at the local flea market.

111 Farrah @ DSITRIKMODE { 01.27.11 at 7:41 am }

Nice!! Now your office looks like a party celebration! Way to pump up the excitement factor every time stepping into your workplace.. I get inspired by artsy creative stuff so I think if i’m on a tight budget & would like to decorate my colored large wall, I would get a huge black & white custom printing of something inspiring… & frame it myself… :)

Emily, have you checked out removable wall decals? Some are kind of kooky, but they’re a great (and temporary) cheap way to embellish a large wall. http://www.whatisblik.com/shop/explore is one site, but there are dozens.

I frame vintage postcards and photographs in ecclectic frames I find everywhere. It’s a growing collage on our wall.

116 Lorna { 01.27.11 at 8:05 am }

That’s very cute! I would paint different shades of pink circles or squares on the wall to give it a modern feel :)

love that color of the wall…

what do you think of my new bag?

118 twenty something { 01.27.11 at 8:10 am }

So creative! Looks adorable!

Another thing you could always do for large walls is frame posters… a lot cheaper than art.

119 alicia martinez { 01.27.11 at 8:12 am }

I used to string up photo hanging wire with those small metal photo clips on rings. Then i would rotate photos of my friends, torn magazine pages, momentos, etc. It’s like a giant inspiration board.

2 ideas for large wall space decoration:

tile-size mirrors. you can arrange them in different patterns, leaving some open space to the wall, and they will light up you room through reflection, create the illusion of even more space (not sure if you want that) and look quite pretty.

Another idea is buying a whole bunch of inexpensive frames and putting pretty pieces of fabric in them. You can arrange the frames in different patterns along the wall. It gives an interesting level of detail without being too expensive!

125 Terri-Leigh { 01.27.11 at 8:29 am }

Gorgeous! I love it.

One day when hubs lets me have a girly pink room all of my own, I know now what I would put on the walls.

Too purdy!

You can make a collage out of magazines that you have saved and just create anything using the headliners, pictures, etc. Or you can install little shelves and place cute curly knick knacks to balance out the glittering tassles. Just a thought!

Such a great idea. Makes a real chnage from hanging a canvas. Totally inspiring!

132 Jessica @ Dairy Free Betty { 01.27.11 at 8:46 am }

I had a big ugly wall and I covered it with a decal from http://www.etsy.com :) It was so beautiful!!! And whimsical!

133 kimberlyloc { 01.27.11 at 8:46 am }

Cute idea, Emily. I have been revamping my home office + new apartment (much like you!). A fun, budget-friendly way to decorate is by framing really beautiful wallpaper sample prints. I have three framed prints (pics soon) in my dining room. Framed photos are obvious, but I like to buy el-cheapo frames and jazz them up myself. Another fun way to spruce up a wall (and add some texture) is by placing large, long bamboo sticks in corners…I found some at Michael’s or Hobby Lobby — do you have those in SoCal? Any crafts store should have ‘em :) Ooh and fun fabrics/tapestries can brighten up a room, too!

Ok, can you tell I used to be an editor at a home magazine? :) Haha.

Happy decorating!

134 Stephanie { 01.27.11 at 8:49 am }

Love the garland – great idea! You can also try white, 3 foot wide (or so) shelves staggered at different heights with frames of black and white photos resting against the wall. Or, get three large frames with large matting and black and white photos. Spread the three frames out side by side to take up most of the wall. I also love Diana’s clustered frames mixed with mirror idea. But the garland looks awesome! Enjoy!!

135 casey { 01.27.11 at 8:49 am }

yes i love the garland it’s so fun!
I had a big empty wall in my little apartment so I just built a giant wood frame with scraps from homedepot and then covered it with some fun fabric (with the help from a staple gun). It was very easy and really cheap. :)

136 mk { 01.27.11 at 8:54 am }

i’ve seen some black sticker art pieces at urban outfitters…think they would be great

137 kate { 01.27.11 at 8:59 am }

I found a company out of St. John’s, Newfoundland of all places that do ‘sticky prints’ (http://www.canvascanada.ca/sticky.html). They are large, non-light reflective, high quality canvas that can be adhered to a wall. The best part however is that you can move them around as many times as you like and they print them in huge sizes at a great price. I was going to great a three-piece, large installation using a photo of the Delicate Arch I took in Moab, Utah, divided into three large pieces. I haven’t tried it yet but I’ve been dying to!

138 Mallory { 01.27.11 at 9:00 am }

You could always frame large pieces of beautiful wallpaper or wrapping paper. These can be inexpensive options and fill as much space as you need them to since you just cut them to the size you need. I do love your fun garland though!

139 Melissa { 01.27.11 at 9:00 am }

Decals!!!! Go to Esty and search for wall decals… I have an awesome tree filling up a big empty wall in my living room.

140 Kathleen { 01.27.11 at 9:09 am }

Your home office is so beautiful! What about collecting a bunch of vintage frames, painting them all white, and just hanging them empty on the wall?

141 Emma { 01.27.11 at 9:10 am }

I did my Christmas tree with the very same garland, it was a bit pricey as I had to get two, but looked great with our champagne and matte white ornaments. I have been absolutely obsessed with tassels these days. Anything I can find on a bag or the slew of Jeffrey Campbell shoes, some of my latest additions…

…I even went as far as making a collar for my dog, but with a name like Winston I felt it was true to form.

142 Ash { 01.27.11 at 9:11 am }

What about your mirrors? In a long rectangle shape this time. The confetti would be lovely underneath it. You’d probably have to spray paint them a more whimsical, soft gold, rather than the bright antique gold they are…but if you don’t already have a home for them, the beautiful items in your office reflecting off of them would be magic. Not to mention it would also make the space look larger!

..As far as the walls go, my boyfriend and I rent, but for our office we put up a temp. beadboard installment on the bottom half of the wall and I covered the top half with the fabric below. We now have 3 very goddy gold frames featured in the center, one of which holds a mirror.

147 Vanessa Valadares { 01.27.11 at 9:25 am }

Emily… I can give you two ideas that i recently saw… First, buy frames with different shapes (you can use differente colors or the same) and place pics or pieces of fabrics that you like (you should have at least 8), looks amazing! Second – buy 3 canvas for painting (1 meter x 0,50 cm) and choose 3 fabrics that you love and matches with your office, wrap the canvas and put in the wall like a painting, you can do it horizontal or vertical… I saw this last one @ DevineDesign the TV show! Looked stonning!

i think you will like it and will be sheap!

All the best!

Cute, but a little pricey. I go into an office, but I really need to decorate at some point it’s very blah right now.

149 S☀S { 01.27.11 at 9:26 am }

You could try doing a cluster-art wall, or maybe hanging up your gorgeous mirrors again? Also, a huge vintage mirror could work well and you have a wonderful way with shabby-chic!
I’m in the process of redecorating too, check out my blog sometime! <3

this is ridiculously cute. I wish they had steeler colors for my superbowl party!!

I love this!

I have been stuck in the same boat – big empty wall with nothing inexpensive enough to fill it. I actually have a pile of photos from magazines that make me smile or inspire me that I’ve been looking to frame …of course I still haven’t found the right frames, or decided how I would hang them yet, but it’s a thought :)

i knew that i saw this before on oh joy’s blog page. great decorating piece. i was thinking that you can just get a nice paint color to do like a small mural type of design or just hang a nice vintage painting/ mirror. whatever it is, I’m sure it’s going to look awesome bc of your great sensibilities.

157 Cameron { 01.27.11 at 9:41 am }

You spent $130 on garland? I have to admit I am a bit shocked. How about you buy a large canvas from a craft supply store and make a piece of art? I have one in mind that I haven’t gotten to using vintage records and costume jewelry shellacked onto a canvas with abstract color blotches to match my living room.

158 vicki { 01.27.11 at 9:45 am }

Find some great fabric – vintage or new (I used Merrimekko) and stretch it over an artists frame for canvas. Mine is HUGE – 4feet X 6feet. Good luck!

159 Leslie { 01.27.11 at 9:48 am }

I love the garland!! You can also create art by using paint to create large frames on your wall to fill with whatever you want!!

living in a dorm room, my walls started out pretty bland, to say the least! I’ve turned one wall into a collage– i call it my blog wall, its just a bunch of pictures i’ve taken from traveling, family photos, quotes, song lyrics, inspiring knick knacks and odds and ends from my year– ticket stubs, feathers, art work, etc. It covers the majority of one whole wall and is fun to look at every day. I’m obsessed with adding to it! On the other wall i hung this giant vintage swatch of cloth with this concentric circular pattern. It’s a nice contrast to the hectic-ness of the opposite wall. Good luck decorating!!

171 Aeri { 01.27.11 at 10:45 am }

This is a great idea! Have you thought about wall decals? They apply very easily and remove flawlessly. They just add so much personality to any room!

172 Sarah Helfgott { 01.27.11 at 10:47 am }

My boyfriend and I are having the same issue at our apartment. We have a giant wall behind the couch in our living room we just don’t know what to do with it.

These are the things we have considered: A collage of pictures and picture frames like Carrie’s room in Sex & The City (see: http://bit.ly/eBNj7o), a large mirror to make the room appear larger, a wall mural painted by an artist friend of mine, or something from Art.com or Z Gallerie.

I love your garland idea though! Looks great. Maybe I can talk my boyfriend into something like that.

Wow, what a beautiful – and unexpected – way to dress up a plain wall!

I would paint 3 large squares of color (I think a beige or navy blue would look great on your wall), and then use them as a ‘frame’ for framed pictures or artwork. This way, you can bring attention to special pieces you would like to display, and take up space on a large wall.

So cute ! One fairly inexpensive solution for a big wall is to buy a cute calendar, cut it up and frame the photos inside! You end up with 10-12 great prints, enough to fill a wall, for maybe $100-200 total. I’ve done it with sketches of Paris, and I may do it with the Vogue calendar I just picked up!

PS I gave you a shout out on my blog earlier today!

I love using large triptych prints to fill a big space. My favorite is this octopus print from Plantation (http://store.plantationdesign.com/n-trioct-blue.html)

You can do this a little bit cheaper by ordering a Triptych print from allposters.com and framing it yourself!

189 Katie { 01.27.11 at 12:45 pm }

I HATE having a bare wall. I need stuff on every wall, otherwise I feel like I’m in a prison or something.
I recently went on a paper crane frenzy and made a big garland of them to hang over my door which is weirdly positioned in the corner. My walls are seafoam, minty green and the cranes are alternating yellow and peach.

190 London chic.x { 01.27.11 at 12:53 pm }

I’ve been lusting after the confetti tassles as well! It looks great.

An easy (and inexpensive) way to fill up a wall is to get some great paper and frame them in monotone, different shaped frames. You could do the same paper or coordinate like the gorgeous Indian papers from Paper Source. The best part is when you get tired of it, you can switch it out with new paper.

I use pictures from various vacations to cover my big wall in my living room/dining room. I keep them all in black & white, to keep a consistent look, and use white mats & black frames. If you hit up a sale at Michaels for frames, you will usually do just fine $$ wise.

It’s also nice to be able to look at the wall and see all of the great places I’ve been with my hubby. :)

i love the tassels! i’ve seen some great ideas in other peeps comments, and the worldy maps sounds really cool, or you could try a little diy and use regular,everyday maps and colour them youself with the old teabag trick!

213 Rroosh { 01.27.11 at 2:47 pm }

Omg I love that! I was looking for something unique to put up on my wall above my bed and I just found it! :)

214 Jessica { 01.27.11 at 3:03 pm }

You could try a mirror or several mirrors to make a focal point. You could also try painting the wall with stripes in the same pink color with a high gloss finish. It’s a little tricky to get the stripes even but it’s worth it in the end.

what about buying beautiful fabric with an interesting print or texture and hanging it across the entire width of the wall?

I love your blog and all your ideas are amazing thanks for sharing.

Oh my gosh, I just love that tassle garland! What an original and affordable idea to decorate a blank wall!

221 Lauren { 01.27.11 at 4:12 pm }

I like finding old empty wooden frames in different sizes for really cheap at antique stores or secondhand shops and spray painting them different colors and arranging them different ways on my walls. I do not put any pictures in them I just let the frames uniqueness speak for itself.

222 Margaret { 01.27.11 at 4:16 pm }

I have just recently decorated a little nook in my room. Love this glitter garland idea! so sweet…

223 karina { 01.27.11 at 4:24 pm }

It’s lovely, but for 130 dollars? You could of easily made it.

224 Emily { 01.27.11 at 4:34 pm }

This just makes me happy!! L.O.V.E

225 Kari { 01.27.11 at 4:50 pm }

That garland is super cute, but overpriced for moi. I might try to do a DIY on these! You always provide inspiration!

226 Karyn { 01.27.11 at 4:50 pm }

$130 seems far too much to pay for some tissue paper and mylar. Normally I love your blog, Emily; however, this post was weak.

227 Dominique { 01.27.11 at 4:59 pm }

try painting large stripes on the wall. one of my bedroom walls was painted with light green and white stripes; it’s awesome!

228 Liz { 01.27.11 at 5:10 pm }

Love this idea! I filled up a big wall in my sitting room/library by hanging big empty frames around the latest issues of magazines that my husband and I read. It looks fun and it’s always changing!

229 Leah { 01.27.11 at 6:07 pm }

I love that it’s not your average tassles, but has an eclectic, and unique vibe to it! It’d look amazing if you got a couple more and draped them all so they overlapped and crisscrossed

The tassels are adorable!
For a large empty wall above my bed, I made two large flower-like decorations out of toilet paper rolls according to a tutorial on Design Sponge:
http://www.designspongeonline.com/2009/11/diy-project-toilet-paper-roll-wall-art.html
I used a hot glue gun instead of glue+clothespins. You can spray paint any color, even metallic, just remember to prime (I forgot)!

Hey Emily,

Just stopping by to say hi, and I really love what you’ve been doing with your office- the tassels add a lovely touch.

Also, in answer to your question- I hung pictures on one of my blank walls using string and colored clothes pins. It added a vintage homely feel. You should definitely try it sometime. :)

This post from Design*Sponge is a really cute idea, having a mural painted of something classic and simple:
http://www.designspongeonline.com/2011/01/before-after-sharons-boutique.html

Or [if you're not the commitment type], what I have are three neutral-colored cubbies mounted on my wall in a row, I can change out the display items when I get tired of them, and I have a large painting standing on top, layered with other smaller pieces of art.

248 Kayla { 01.28.11 at 7:30 am }

For large spans of wall space I do something similar. I get thick wire and create a length down the wall, then using regular wooden clothespins I display various sizes of photos and inspirational images.

249 Jessica { 01.28.11 at 7:42 am }

What a fun and whimsical way to dress up empty space! Wonderful inspiration.

250 Dana { 01.28.11 at 7:43 am }

I like to do something similar to that. I use really pretty ribbon and get fun clothes pins or hooks and hang my favorite pictures.

251 terra black { 01.28.11 at 9:28 am }

i’m more in love with the color of your walls…really sophisticated and chic, not what i’d expect from a shade of pink. i’ve also been considering what to do with the large wall behind my desk and i recently came across these which i love:

Great idea to cover the space! You can always try unique shelving or a nice bookcase since it’s your office. Having literature nearby can serve as great inspiration or a fill up any idle time you have.

CUTE WALLPAPER ON ONE ACCENT WALL

263 Laura { 01.28.11 at 9:18 pm }

I love the garland! It’s much too sparkly for my own decor, but still such great eye candy!

On our huge living room wall, I’ve hung two teardrop-shaped glass vases I bought on CB2 (for next to nothing) far enough apart to stick a large piece of art in between. Between that and the massive cream-colored couch, the wall is full. I switch the art out every month or so and the vases get changed on whim or when something dies. My favorite to fill the vases in the winter is sprigs from those little red berry trees and fallen seed pods collected during the fall. It makes a pretty, winter-appropriate look.

I like the idea of the decorating stickers on the wall…. there is a whole site about them… http://www.wallstickershop.com/wallstickers.cfm/clearance-wall-stickers/0/pcid/298/cid/395/

I never actually bought some there, but my friend did and she’s quite happy with them!

269 The Budget Babe { 01.30.11 at 2:25 pm }

hmm you might try framing some beautiful silk scarves. i bet you could find relatively inexpensive ones at the flea markets you frequent!

270 Beth {Embracing Twentysomething} { 01.30.11 at 7:59 pm }

Emily – love your style, your taste, and design!

If you want an amazing idea – check out this wall I saw at Ann Taylor: http://embracingtwentysomething.typepad.com/my-blog/2010/11/have-you-seen-the-new-ann-taylor.html

It’s a mix of mirrors and hooks. I fell in love with it and wish I had a wall large enough to do this display! I think it would look fabulous behind your desk. Don’t be fooled with cost either – you can find cheap mirrors at thrift stores, garage sales, etc. {I’ve even seen them at Home Depot for a good price!} And hooks just the same. The mirrors capture and reflect the light so well, and the hooks are another means for displaying necklaces, clutches, etc.

Just an idea! Thanks for your constant inspiration.

271 Vivian { 01.31.11 at 11:45 am }

I literally have pictures of these taken from J Crew’s window displays and had them saved for a DIY project. Thanks for the link so I can purchase if I get too lazy! I completely agree – it livens up your space perfectly!

273 Emily { 01.31.11 at 8:56 pm }

There are primers that can make your wall magnetic (like this one: http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=127) and turn a wall into a giant bulletin board without the holes and pins. I have one in my room and love it! You can paint whatever color over it you want and you can’t tell the difference!

274 monica { 01.31.11 at 11:00 pm }

I fell in love with the confetti systems ones too and ended up making some for my New years party because I couldn’t afford the real deal. You can check them out on my blog! I wanted to leave them up so bad, now I wish I did!

275 Redjezebell { 02.01.11 at 2:42 am }

i dont know if its already been suggested but i always find big sihloette sticky decals a great option for big wall , especially if there the chalkbord type ones as you keen leave little notes on the – i got mine from urban outfitters and ikea :)

276 livvvvvvvvv { 02.01.11 at 3:37 pm }

i LOVE this idea, it would make a great DIY project! when i have a large empty wall i scatter small photos all over, or put up a few large colorful paintings.

277 Laura { 02.01.11 at 5:32 pm }

I am very pleased with my new wall decoration, we found a pristine blue metallic acoustic guitar in our neighbours skip so we snaffled it that night, its going on the kitchen diner wall =) Its so blue, I love it!

looks great!

I have a HUGE wall in my bedroom, i used postcards/old notes/letters/walmart printed pictures all in black and white and hung them from home made vertical clothes lines (3m hooks holding up a thing wooden dowel rod, then simply tie white cloth string that can hang as long as you like with as many as you want across) and attached all the goodies with clothes pins. super cute, super cheap!

love your blog!

280 Ph.D { 02.04.11 at 2:57 am }

what is your profession?

about our empty wall- what’s about some wall stickers or frame-shelf(selfmade)
or provide a ladder to the wall, it’s very decorative and also you can hang your scarves and necklaces on it.

281 sheree { 02.05.11 at 6:56 am }

Wow a lot of comments…for decorating large walls I recommend wall mouldings. They add something to the wall and you can also fill them in with wallpaper which looks awesome. I have a post on my blog take a look at this link http://highstyleinthehudsonvalley.blogspot.com/2009/05/wallpaper-mouldings.html.

282 Ffion @ Chocolate and Raspberries { 02.11.11 at 9:52 am }

That garland is really nice! Adds some sparkle :)
My tip for filling a large wall would be to paint your own canvas! You can get plain canvases quite cheap, you could even buy several canvases rather than one huge one. I can see that you are a creative person, I’m sure you’d be able to think of something cool to paint!

283 Caitlyn { 03.08.11 at 6:49 pm }

For empty walls, I can never get enough of tapestries, old maps, and antique mirrors. :)

These tassels are quite lovely!

284 Jamie { 03.20.11 at 9:14 pm }

Oh I love it! I actually saw one of those on Etsy a while back…bookmarked the main shop’s page b/c I loved the garland so much. Good way to spruce up a wall, thanks.

(It doesn’t seem to be the same one you bought, but a more affordable version I guess).

285 Alexis { 05.06.11 at 7:13 pm }

Try Ikea for large and cheap prints (sometimes prints on stretched canvas). Or vintage/ flea market frames (empty) and spray painted all one color (gloss black or white)

286 sami { 05.14.11 at 7:09 pm }

Trading Phrases.com is awesome for wall decor that is affordable and can cover a huge array of surfaces/sizes/colors/themes- you can even customize them! :)

287 Sara { 06.05.11 at 3:23 am }

I have a large book of Botanical Prints (http://www.amazon.com/Book-Botanical-Prints-Complete-Plates/dp/1435100182) that I found on the bargain shelf at Barnes and Noble for $24.95. It has beautiful, old-looking prints of flowers and greens that are very inspiring. It’s a great coffee table book, but it’s also a great source of art! I just cut them out close to the spine with an x-acto knife. It’s a great resource to have!

You have my absolute favorite blog, by the way. I used to adore Domino, so it’s wonderful to have that connection to it still!!

Emily,

I am in love with your pink walls. Its simple and fresh and brightens the space. I love your simple design ideas. If you are still looking for advice for large empty walls, my favorite thing to do is to find old frames or mirrors from flea markets or if you have any sitting around and hang them up in a pattern or scattered. You can leave them empty or take old pictures of your family tree, such as old pictures of your grandparents or your parents etc. I also enjoy just printing some of my favorite things out of my home printer and putting them in the frames. That is some of my ideas I hope it helps.

290 Kate { 10.18.11 at 10:13 am }

A little late to respond, but I just came across this post. I had a barren wall, barren wallet situation myself, and I made these frames to fill space in a frugal way. Much cheaper than buying frames and art!

Take a look:
