She’s My Kind of Rain
Since the past few days have been dark and stormy, I feel like I’ve somehow experienced my first harsh winter. I know that throwing on my Hunter boots doesn’t exactly classify as arctic conditions, but nonetheless, I’ve been having a bit of trouble coping. You can only have soup for lunch so many times and even the concept of curling up to watch movies has become tiresome. For those of you that actually experience really cold temperatures for months at a time, what are your tips/tricks for not going stir crazy? Now if you’ll excuse me, my hot and sour soup should be arriving in moments and I’ve got a movie to finish.

omg i love that song!! This rain not so much! It has been crazy!
i wouldsay, break out some board games, challenge some friends to a night of games! or this might sound a little odd but i just did a early spring cleaning of sorts, your inside all day and it definetly keeps you occupied, and you feel so much better afterwards!!! or you could do some d.i.y projects? hope it helps!!
it has been nuts emily i agree. i hate venturing out in thunderstorms =(

I go tanning.

I have no idea sorry, we have perpetually hot summers where I’m from
HOPE YOU ENJOY YOUR WEEKEND!
Haha, I’ve been doing what Lorelai’s been doing! I’ve been cleaning my house (and studying) whenever I’m not walking/driving to class in the rain. Thank goodness for cute, tall boots, though!
BUT, I’m planning on trying the Urth Caffe in DTLA tomorrow after lunch in Little Tokyo. Thank goodness for Fridays off.
I live in Portland where it rains more than one would like. To keep myself upbeat I keep fresh cut flowers in bright vases around the house and paint my nails cheery colors. I do admit waking up to gray skies and rain tapping makes it difficult but it does make you appreciate a day of sunshine a whole lot more!
Have friends over!! Or hang out in cozy cafes!!!

Ok so I’ve just moved from Sydney to London in Winter – I’m crazy!!! So yep I went and got myself a pair of hunter boots… And my trick is meet up with my friends and do a long lunch! Or have a nice dinner party.
Honestly I wish I lived in a place where Winter means 3 months of snow… I love staying at home while outside it’s freezing, watching films, studying, sewing, reading and drinking tea with my BF
i tend to head up the mountain on those wintery weekends… gets you out and about, plus who can resist a roadtrip?
boarding keeps me fit during those cold months and the eye candy is just to die for!
im new to this, so if you have a bit of time… check out my site and let me know what you think. x

Take advantage of the desire to be warm and indoors – invite some friends over, see a movie or play some silly games, have some great warm foods – pizza, stew, etc. At least the company makes things more fun!
where i live it gets down to -30 C. sometimes even worse!
living in France, i know all about cold and rainy winters

Here are a few tricks to help:
-practise party or regular day make-up with the incredible collection of colors I have, I take time to try on some different things. Same with nail colors.
-day at the spa: either at a real spa or at home with hair-masks, face-masks, pedicure, manucure, etc. If u really want to spend time on it, make ur own products!
-day cooking, for ur friends, that u invite for a long dinner which allows you to try new recipes. Can be followed by a night of boardgames
Hope u’ll manage to find something to do!
Hey!
Here is Scotland, winter lasts forever! and it rains more than anywhere else…my tips would be: go to the pub, go for an indoor swim + steam room (you’ll come out all hot and ready for the cold), dress up really warm (esp. your feet and head), drink hot chocolate, cheesy spicy bakes beans on toast is an amazing alternative to soup, get some jigsaws on the go, work on your interior…and pretend it’s not raining
And remember, you are lucky, it only rains about a month a year in LA!!
Have a nice weekend
Margaux from BoRO Xx
What I love to do during dreary weather (of which we get our fair share!) is get cultured! It’s the perfect time to see an art show or an exhibition.
If you’re not into going out, you can try a DIY mani-pedi!
To get through Boston’s winters, I…
-go to the gym/hit a long yoga class (or two)
-shop (i’ll spend an hour or two browsing at a bookstore)
-knit
-bake (then revisit the gym, of course)
Then I just repeat until spring comes!
Yeah, don´t talk to me about arctic! In Norway we´ve had negative 20 degrees Celsius for most of December and January!
I recommend to walk outside (you actually do get used to it) so that when you get back inside and put on your comfiest outfit, the cup of tea, slice of cake, book/boardgame/TP questions/Glee episode/SS10 runway videos from style.com/bakeitpretty.com, you totally deserve it!
Love your blog, check it every day (I don’t have a blog myself, no time for that)….
I am from the Netherlands, and here winters are water cold as we call them. Temperatures are not too low however the rain and the wind make it very cold. This winter was pretty cold and we even had a month of snow! But I also tend to wear my Hunters most of the time haha….I layer up with light fabrics combined with heavier materials and chunky knits. I hate wearing knitted sweaters thats why. And I have lots of boots next to my high heel collection for winters.
TO entertain myself during those dark and long days, studying and cleaning the house (whenever not in school)….and flipping through old pictures and old magazines looking for new inspirations. I always end up redecorating my whole house, adding accessories in bold and warm colors. It always seems different that way. Or going out for long walks with the dog. Also gives me an excuse to put on my rain poncho
And me and my friends mostly end up with movie nights as well or we go out to clubs and dance the night away. Or we will go to the sauna for the day to relax, and go under the tanning bed to feel the sun a little bit haha…Most of the time I am with friends since the weather makes me feel sad. So we end up with girls night in our pj’s and making snacks or going to the movies., reading old (fashion magazines).
Long story haha….hopefully some tips for you!
Anna
I love going to bookstores like Barnes & Noble, either reading through magazines or browsing for a new book, and drinking some coffee. My boyfriend and I have also discussed other indoor activities we’ve never done before: take in an ice hockey game, go to a planetarium to see a laser light show, go to an art museum, go to an aquarium (we’ve gone to Shedd’s Aquarium in Chicago), or of course there’s always indoor shopping
i love the rain too but after a few days of it i definitely go a little stir crazy. also, my dad wrote the song “She’s My Kind of Rain” for Tim McGraw. ha! xoxo
Plan a trip! Half the fun of a trip is the planning. I live in Michigan where it is dismal about 6 months of the year. If I have something to look forward to I can take the lousy weather. I tell myself, “just wait, only __ more days until you’re out of here”
I’m lucky enough to have a house in the Bahamas and when I’m not there, I’m planning the next trip, picking up things I need to take back with me or ideas for island meals.
(Let me know if you want to rent my house so you can plan a trip!)
Personally, I go out in my rainboots & jump in the puddles. It’s so liberating!!!
http://www.theairconditionedgypsy.com
Southern CA has gotten slammed with all that rain! I am from the Boston area, and cold weather/snow lasts for 4 months. It’s so hard not to go crazy! I try to get out as much as I can – go out to dinner, plan fun new adventures, and I always plan some sort of vacation during this timeframe so I can escape the cold.
Hope your soup was comforting in lieu of all this rain!!
xo
I just walked my 20 minute walk to work and it is -10 celcius today (14 F). Trade you! But rain does definitely weight heavy on the heart. I started going to fitness classes this winter, I go to one almost every night. Gives me something to look forward to! I’ve also been trying tons of new recipes (which means I also spend alot of time online searching for new recipes) – there are so many more cold weather treats than soup! I also dream of spring clothes and bookmark links to pretty spring dresses and make lists of my must-haves, etc. January’s almost over! Chin up!
Wow, great suggestions here! I live in eastern Canada so we have winters about 5 mths of the year or so, usually temps anywhere from zero to -15 every day (celsius). This winter in particular has been very snowy and dry (though we got lots of rain year round being right on the ocean). I find having casual, indoor get-togethers with friends is always nice, involving comfort food – we had a fondue night a few weeks ago. Nothing beats curling up on the couch in cozy clothes with a warm drink and snack though, watching dvd’s. Going to movies or a sweaty, update fitness class, or looking at fun, bright blogs and websites always cheers me up. But sometimes it’s nice to embrace the weather (sometimes it really can be quite beautiful) and get outside and get active – go sledding or skating or for a sleigh ride (doing that next weekend). Plus throughout the season I like to wear cute, bright and fun outerwear – wear a bright red coat, brightly printed scarves and chic leather gloves, cute yet practical boots. It makes the layering fun and keeps you from looking gray and pale to match the outdoors. You have to wear layers upon layers to stay warm (particularly if you take public transit, like me) so why not have fun doing it?!
Sorry, by “update” fitness class, I meant “upbeat” lol
I’m so used to cold, snowy winters that I love them. When they roll around they don’t affect my days much at all. I still go outside and go hiking. In fact, I think it’s the best time to go hiking because the state parks aren’t swarming with people. I love running outside in the snow, too.
yoga is by far my greatest coping mechanism during the freezing and windy boston winters. actually, a couple of weeks ago a friend and i debated the pros and cons of winter vs summer. you might find some helpful things that make the outlook on dull weather a bit more bearable.
http://www.wilywiley.blogspot.com
having grown up in massachusetts and now in NY i’ve been thru plenty of brutal winters. the best thing is to plan a getaway to some place warm (going to st barts next week!) – that totally breaks it up…and also watching entire seasons of tv series on dvds – just finished three seasons of dexter and am going to start glee ASAP…afternoon naps help too! and think how wonderful the nice weather will seem when if finally comes…
coming from someone from chicago, i feel you. however, i think anyone from chicago will tell you that people still go out in the winter and resume normal activities. if not, we’d all nut up. maybe that’s why people from chicago drink so much. i guess some would say it’s called denial.
It’s really hard! I dream if moving to a warmer climate. Try to fill your day with activities you love, whether it be stopping by your favorite cupcake shop or renting a good movie. I also try to go against all color palates for winter around this time of year and wear bright colors. I just wore a summer dress over a ton of layers just to make myself feel like warm weather is near. Good luck!
I hear you. I mean come on, I live in Sweden. It’s been grey since late October. Seriously! As far as I know the only cure is to a) take a vacation someplace that isn’t miserable for half the year or b) move back to the U.S. So, yeah… Not too much help, sorry.
Im from Toronto, Canada (no I dont live in an igloo) and we’re famous for our 5 months of winter. Technically Winter doesn’t start til December. But come November, its rare to see me leave the house without some form of a scarf/mitt combo. And in April when all you can think about is flip flops and sundresses, Im still usually in Uggs and wool sweaters. I make the most of the snowy season by snowboarding and taking weekend trips to cottages and farms with friends where you sleep til noon, eat tons of food, never let the fire die and play games til your blue in the face.
If that fails, a little Bailey’s in your afternoon coffee with some steamed milk always seems to do that trick.
getting outside & in the fresh air, regardless of temperature. i find taking a good 30 min + walk, even in the cold, invigorates. also, soaking in winter sites like a sponge – gray (as in the winter sky) are underrated. it’s the perfect backdrop to all of nature (& man’s) pretty colors! also i tend get super DIY in the winter – visits to lots of fabric/trimming stores, etc. best! i love your new etsy pieces, btw!
can I make you a little jealous, the weather is perfect here in Honolulu, maybe a vacation is what you need.
Layers, layers and more layers. Also, lots of red wine to warm you up from the inside
)
I know this sounds crazy but I get outside in the cold, or wet weather and run. I love to run so this is enjoyable for me, but if you don’t like to run you could go for a brisk walk. It gets you outside in the cold, building up the endorphins, and then you really appreciate the cozy in doors, movie, soup… I always look forward to the end of my cold runs because I feel deserving of the coziness I can make for myself when I get home.
Send your rain this way! I would love a little in Oklahoma. Still, rain or shine your blog ALWAYS makes me want to visit LA. Just lovely!
after living in minnesota for seven years now i have come to the conclusion that the further north you go and the colder the weather gets, the more likely people are to come to terms with it and make it a part of their lifestyle. so in MN people cross country ski, they ice fish and drink hot whiskey cider, they do polar plunges- or in other words, they get out anyway and try and see the beauty in it
so pull on those galoshes and go for a hike or something!

I have experience with both rain and snow and I tend to have different tactics for both. I am from the chilly state of MN and now live in NYC, both of which get snow, but New York City doesn’t get the kind of snow that Minnesota gets
for Rain:
I love to sit my my apartment with no music or tv and just listen to the rain. I really enjoy it. Its a great time to get things done that you have been putting off. maybe doing the laundry or other chores around the house. I like to take the time to design and create, maybe sew or work on a project.
For the Snow:
Snow is a little different. When ther is snow on the ground and the sun it out, I love being outside. to get all bundled up and walk in the city, meet up with friends for brunch or coffee. and again, if it is a blizzard out my window I head to my desk and sew some more!
I have a fulltime job so I don’t get a lot of time to work on my own projects. I think that is why I embrase the rain and snow. it gives me an excuse to stay inside and do my own thing.
I also love a little Wii fun, maybe invit friends over that are willing to get wet from the elements and have a friendly competition of Dance Dance revolution!
As weird as it sounds vitamin D pills. I’m from minnesota and with three feet of snow on the ground right now and drizzly sleet/rain coming down the lack of sun starts to hit you. You can get them any vitamin store and they really make a difference.
I live in Ohio, where we’ve had a whole month of clouds. I’ve learned to just embrace it. If I can still get outside for a walk once a day, especially in the woods, it helps. You never know what lovely things you’ll see. . .a frozen waterfall or a dew-covered spider web.
I live in Canada, and it’s normally -30 during the winter. I’ve lived here all my life so the cold temperatures don’t bother me. As long as you’re dressed appropriately there’s plenty for you do during winter.
Here in Chicago, all we’ve had is frozen rain the past week–and now the weather’s threatening to dip into the single digits again. Yawn! Things that help: Looking forward to April
No, honestly, you really do just get used to it. Good luck. Also, maybe look into getting a light box? They’re mainly for folks who suffer from Seasonal Depression–but anyone can benefit.
I understand! I moved from Cali to DC and the weather change is not easy to take, but I’m a newlywed so staying in is welcomed. *smile* The good news is that you are in a fab city! Bundle up in some cute sweaters and boots, get a warm and relaxing spa treatment, make a luxurious breakfast at home with mimosas (being a little tipsy can help), and maybe try catching up new TV shows or revisiting the old…my faves – BH 90210, Felicity, Golden Girls, and Matlock (no judgment!).
I’m from Maine originally (living in Boston now) winters are spent snowmobiling, snowboarding, snowshoeing (basically any activity where the first four letters are S-N-O-W!), watching lots of movies and sewing.
I and from and still currently reside in Minnesota, where the regular temp can get down to -20 not taking into consideration the wind chill. So you will get NO pity from me, sorry
As many have mentioned, indoor deep cleaning is a continuous activity and cleaning a 3 level house is MORE than one person can do in one day. I love shopping and live 15 minutes away from the Mall of America so I make frequent trips there. Their Nickelodeon Universe (indoor amusment park) is a great way to get the kids out of the house too! Movies are a constant go to activity as my husband, kids and I are not winter sports activists lol.
I have two children (9 & 4) who are in a multitude of sports so running them around and watching swimming and basketball fill a lot of time during the winter.
My family cannot wait for above freezing temps where the snow will melt and street cleaners make an appearance as we will be able to get outside for more than the regular 5 minute walk to and from the car!!
Enjoy the rain, it’s much better than massive amounts of snow for 5-7 months of the year!
Well I live in Eastern Europe and its freakin cold here. -20 C!
well i guess a good book gets me thorugh… or you could start a DIY project.
I hate to tell you this, but in Boston/Upstate NY, we basically charge through winter full speed ahead. I spend more time at the gym and yoga studio than I do when I have nice weather at my disposal. I’ve also been trying to cook/bake as many new things as I can afford to. Sometimes it’s nice to have a cleaning or decorating project, but I imagine you’ve got that under control. If there’s good theatre or music being performed that you’re interested, that’s always nice. Sometimes it’s just enough to shake things up by curling up at a bookstore instead of your couch or bed. Sorry I can’t be of more help – a lot of my winter activities involve snow!
xxLauren
I grew up in Fargo, North Dakota so staying in during the winter was normal. We watched TV, played board games, talked, did a lot of homework, etc. =) xoxo
http://www.fashionsnag.com
I’m from Wisconsin…I’ve driven in an ice stom to attend a holiday party. I think it’s safe to say, go out in the rain…I promise you it could be much much worse!
For me, the lack of sunshine is the biggest let down during rainy times or winter months. I ended up buying a sun lamp (NOT a tanning lamp) and turn it on while I’m at my desk for 15 min or so. It makes a HUGE difference in my mood and I don’t feel nearly as sluggish. In the meantime, I’m planning my spring vacation!
I saw a couple of other people mention this, but I do love to get a lot of cleaning done when its cold and I’m stuck in the house. Plus, if you’re going to spend a lot of time inside, at least it’s nice and clean, and organized. We’ve also been inviting friends and family over for dinners, movie nites, rock band battles, etc in front of the fire. It’s not so bad when you get to enjoy time with others.
I am in NYC so I know how you feel! Def spike the coffee and do some sort of art project =) Also, turkey chili is great comfort too, topped with cilantro. Truly amazing combination!
I love everyone’s suggestions – makes me want to do more with my down time in the winter. I tend to go into full on organizational mode in the time between Christmas and Easter. Clean/Organize/Enjoy!
Baking also hits me. Especially this year. I didn’t make as many cookies as I usually do during the Christmas holiday so I have a lot of baking ingredients left over that I don’t want to go to waste. I figured instead of bringing sweets into the house (part of my New Year’s Resolution) – I’m only allowed to enjoy that stuff if I take the time to bake it. Once baked I will save some for my home and take the rest to work. Keeps me busy and helps me work on my baking skills.
My other favorite thing about this time of year bon fires and fire pits in back yards. Sure it’s a lot more comfortable in the spring, summer and fall months but it’s more cozy under a warm blanket with the one you love!
SMORES ANYONE?
reading? drinking? shopping? all at the same time? you already do a lot of cooking, which is another good one.
I live in Minnesota, where winter lasts forever. It’s hard to function when it is so dreary, so I feel your pain! I basically try to find substitutes for the sun when it doesn’t want to show its face: I wear bright clothes (I get some weird looks when I’m wearing yellow in the middle of winter, but who cares), I turn on my extra bright seasonal affective lights, and I stay warm by bundling up and drinking a lot of hot drinks. Make sure you’re getting enough vitamin D, and use the dark time to catch up on your sleep! You’ll make it through
I’m from the Northeast and I hate winter. Usually when it’s cold I do things to keep myself warm like take hot baths. Going to the movies is also a good way to pass the time. Unfortunately the weather is usually bad here in winter so when I can’t leave the house I plan my summer vacations!
I know rain and snow makes you want to crawl under a blanket and hibernate, but here in Canada we are left with no other option than to embrace the winter conditions! I spend my evenings cross-country skiing with my girlfriends, headlamps intact to light our way, warming up around a fire. Last night was spent learning to snow-shoe. Other evenings we snowboard, go outdoor skating, snowmobiling, etc. The cold weather doesn’t mean you are stuck indoors up here, it means you bundle up and get outside!
I grew up on the east coast and the months of November, January and February were always miserable – lots of board games and movie. I’m in San Diego now and the rain/horrible driving conditions this past week have been bad!
I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona then moved to Chicago for school. I found that it is realllly helpful to make lists of goals for the day because when it’s dark out it’s really easy to get lazy and sleepy. I also love to create while I’m stuck inside. I paint, knit, sew, and crochet. Good luck with your little bit of cold!!
-Malori
oh, goodness. i understand. this week was my last week of winter break during grad school, and i am definitely stir-crazy. to help cope, i’ve been trying to head outside the moment there is a break in the clouds, to bake bread, work on art projects, and alternate nights of movie watching and book reading. i get cranky if i watch too many movies! hoping your rainy days are over soon!
This rain is depressing me too, so during the day I listen to cheery music to drown out the sound of the rain hitting the office windows, it helps. As for nightitme, I do the same as you , but I bought a bunch of flowers at Trader Joes and they’re all over our apartment. I light up some candles and breath in relaxing scents while watching movies. Last night it was a viewing of The Ususal Suspects.
well i live in the winter wonderland of Michigan, where winter can start in early November and has been known to stay around til Easter! I definitely notice a mood change, especially when it gets dark at 5pm. I try to stay active to keep my body from going into hybernation mode- work out and try and stay active. Also- i always surround myself with warm and sunny place- i have pics from my trip to australia in my room, and pics of the beach in cube at work. and music i have found, can get you through any day, life event and moood! colbi calliat, jason mraz and jack johnson are always good artists!
Hmmmm……I keep bright flowers in vases and drinks lots of lovely tea…..and have friends over and play loud music so as you do not hear the rain…..Oh and wear LOTS of yellow……..Stay around people that are upbeat!!!
Being from Calgary Alberta, winter can stay for quite a while. I’m not into all those winter sports, because really, who wants to be outside in -20? I usually get some nice summery air fresheners from Pottery Parn or Bath and Body Works to make things smell like spring/summer. I paint my nails every week with a nice bright color. I wear brighter colors. Watch summer/teen movies. And I read tons. Basically we hibernate. hahaha. Tanning helps too! (or self tanner!)
I have lived in MN all my life…and I guess I became accustomed to the cold through necessity. MNs are insane. Ever heard of the polar plunge? We build igloos *because we can* in our backyards, we sled, ski, snowboard and skate even when the windchill is -30 and we go to things like Bockfest to drink in the cold Feb weather. My suggestion is to bundle up and try to get out and enjoy the weather! At least you appreciate the warmth when you get back inside after a romp in the cold weather!
knitting and crocheting is my winter activity. i cant seem to do it when it is warm outside. it is perfect to do on the sofa under a blanket while watching a day of movies on tv or at a tea lounge with a friend.
a trip to the tanning bed every once and a while doesnt hurt. everyone needs some sunshine in their life.
oh and i also live vicariously through los angeles blogs when it is cold in nyc. thanks!
First off, I love love LOVE your blog! Thank you for being such a bright spot in my work-week.
I agree with other posters suggestions above about reading, watching DVDs, hanging out with friends, boardgames, Yoga and other fitness classes, bundling up and going for walks etc.
I also use this time to do self-exploratory activities, like journalling and vision boards…and started a blog recently; please check it out sometime when you have a moment! (www.chloeblossom.com)
I wish I could tell you, I don’t cope very well. I go a little crazy every winter! Winter activities help – I don’t know is skiing is a possibility for you, and I suck at it anyway, but I found an indoor rock climbing gym that helps me.
http://www.ToilTroubleStyle.com
Too funny reading this! I went to college at Penn State (freezing) and I live in NYC- so I’ve had my share of cold weather. It’s hard. I’m often walking and cursing under my breath about the frigid cold weather and how I should move to sunny California : ) Every winter I make sure I have some good movies to watch (oh and also a bf to keep my warm lol ) and luckily I live across the street in Soho from my favorite bar!
http://peacelovenutrition.wordpress.com/
How do we cope? We go outside. We skate, we ski, we walk and we drink yummy red wine and eat delicious cheese and then we all put on our summer clothes at the first sight of spring, even if it means FREEZING because it is not really spring yet.
Hang in there!
good picture what’s the movie?
http://www.whatdialike.com
in vancouver it rains all the time. you don’t necessarily need to eat soup 24/7, but tea and cocoa are good warmers, and cozy comfort food – like mac&cheese.
as for activities, we go to to movies, rent movies, have boardgame nights, go bowling, anything we can possibly do indoors. but since we’re so used to the rain, we still venture out.
but make sure you take vitamin d!
I know it sounds crazy but sometimes it is the little things that passes the time.
play old board games, put together a huge puzzle, devour yourself in a really great book, take up a new hobby, scrapbooking, eat chili and cornbread, chicken and dumplings.
Cold weather can be SO much fun.
i take that time to re-organize my house – cleaning out closets and cupboards, etc. that way all of my spring cleaning is done before spring
Just because its cold and raining doesn’t mean you have to stay cooped up inside! Im from Chicago and sometimes we can go weeks on end without seeing the sun, but the change and flux in weather is nice sometimes, a good change of pace, unless there are iceicles hanging from your nose
For me, cold weather gives you the change to wear lots and lots of layers and hunter boots! So go out, enjoy the rain! and be thankful that it isnt below freezing.
Try cooking a great stew-like dish. Last year, I had my first winter in my new house and one freezing afternoon I decided to make Barefoot Contessa’s short ribs…it took about an hour or so to prepare, but then I let it sit on top of the stove for three and the whole house was filled with a smell I can’t even find words to describe. And the meat….OH….the meat!!
Here in Germany it has been a hars winter, too … So much snow, I loved it! But now it’s really driving me crazy, the snow just vanished because the temperature’s over 0°C and the weather forecast tells us, that it’ll snow again this weekend … Just crazy. I thought it’d be global WARMING and not global cooling … Wuargh …
So most of the time when I peeled out of my 2 shirts, tights, jeans, pullover, coat and scarf, I enjoyed a bubble bath to heaten up a bit … And read some fashion stuff or just listen some really UN-christmassy music. And when I got out of the tub, I cook some really summerly meals with tropical fruits etc.
Just brave the temperature!!
Lots of sweaters and blazers, lots of layering, drawers stocked with different kinds of tea (to match your mood). The great thing is you get to use all of the cute cold weather wear like rain boots, hats, gloves, and scarves. Lucky for you it’s only temporary. Try to make some shrimp and coconut thai soup….yum!
I usually do alot of cooking, organizing, and crafting. I sort of nest when its rainy and cold outside…but I live on the Coast in Central California so its rarely cold for more than a couple days at a time l ike it is for you.
I, like a few other people here, am from Boston and went to undergrad in Rhode Island, so I’m well-acquainted with bad weather. My favorite ways to beat the weather:
- drink lots of tea
- have people over and play games
- take up a new hobby (sewing, etc.)
- clean, clean, clean
- lots of baking/cooking
- travel and visit friends elsewhere
- rearrange the furniture (seriously)
I live in Boston: it’s always brutal here, and went to college in Montreal: think -30-40 degrees almost every day in the winter. here are my tips
1. i buy fabulous boots and warm socks
2. winter photography is wonderful and soothing (get out there)
3. i buy white roses and put them in vases around my apartment.
4. make/bake an array of comfort=happiness
5. always have peppermint hot chocolate stocked in pantry
6. dance parties on the weekend. drinking warms you up and dancing makes you sweat!
7. use red cayenne pepper to zest up otherwise boring recipes
8. use a fireplace or find a friend who has one (in that case, roast marshmallows)
9. MOISTURIZE
10. buy bathing suits for ridiculously low prices
This might sound crazy, but confront the elements and go outside! You don’t have to STAY there, but after staying indoors for days at a time, you should take yourself out on the town–go to a show, go out to dinner, spend all day browsing in an indoor mall. Most of the time, you’ll feel glad you braved the rain because it’s worth it! Boston is not kind in the winter, so if we stayed indoors all the time, we’d definitely be in trouble!
I live in edmonton, alberta, canada and it is freezing here from october to march/ april…me and my friends fondue! Cheese, wine and friends, warm up any type of weather…
i light a pineapple or beach scented candle and watch movies that take place on tropical islands.
So reading these comments because I need help too!
The best piece of advice anyone has ever given me on North Idaho’s ridiculously harsh winter is this: go outside anyway. And you know what? It works.
I knit and listen to a book on tape. The wool keeps me warm! Agree about tanning — alleviates winter blues!
Aside from the slower commute the weather isn’t affecting me much (I am also in Socal), since I’m working most of the time. I go for a run when there’s a break in the rain, and I do ashtanga yoga. And the surf has been some the best we’ve seen in San Diego in the last 10 years. I love it…. it’s a wonderful opportunity to be productive indoors….
I’m a little jealous that you get to curl up and enjoy it! I can’t even hear the rain in my lab. : (
I’m from out east, so I don’t know if you have any ski resorts around the area, but that is where I’m headed this weekend! It’s my favorite escape for a chilly weekend. People just know how to have a good time up there, inside or out.
cozy fireplaces + knitting. and reading. i love indoor activities almost as much as i love the hectic pace of the crazy summer outdoor fun. (almost)
then hiking no matter what the weather is. up in oregon, the soil absorbs the rain very efficiently, rather than turning trails into mud pits like back home, in texas.
the mountains of colorado get totally chilly.
my cure is lots of HOT yoga, tea, and CASHMERE! and lots of weekend get-a-ways too.
It was -20 degrees celcius through December. I drank loads of hot chocolate, and used woolen mittens and my burberry cashmere scarf. Maybe not that cold over in the states, but I suggest cashmere scarfs and hot chocolate

I grew up in L.A. and lived there for 23 years, for the last 3 I’ve been living in Portland and it has definitely taken some getting used to. I usually just try to hang out with friends either at home or we go out and shop, eat, or watch movies. I suggest crafting (scrapbooking, knitting, crocheting, etc..) or taking up a hobby. Around here we have a lot of bars to help us get through the almost 4 months of rain and gloom.
those of us in NYC pass the winter by dreaming of moving to LA — sigh!
Ahh…isn’t working from home wonderful? Granted, things have gotten a bit more…interesting now that little D is here, but I wouldn’t trade my situation for the world! My trick is to always get outside, if only for a quick walk up the block with the baby and/or dogs. Or a trip to Starbucks. Don’t get in the habit of just staying inside in bad weather. Fresh air recharges you and makes you appreciate your home/office situation:)
PS I feel like I’m on LA time today. Devon was up half the night (transitioning to her crib) and so we slept in today until ELEVEN!
lemon and ginger tea with lots of honey, thick scarves, woolly hats, long socks, dance classes, movie nights, mulled wine, spiced cider, board games (try having a twister night!), hot water bottles, early mornings, fashion magazines, a heroes box set, a good book or twenty, and someone to curl up under the blankets with!

I live in New England so I know all about harsh winters! Here its our norm, so we do everything we would if it was summer go to dinner, movie, shopping! I go get my nails done in cherry red. That always cheers me up.
Just gotta perk up and act like it’s not so nasty outside! Get out, go to a show, play some games with your friends. I’ve been cooking up a storm, and cleaning house. But don’t you love that one day when you’re able to stay at home in comfy clothes (sweatpants!) and clean, and read old magazines, and watch trashy tv without end? i live for days like that.
jenga… the game. trust me
oh, and wine. can’t forget the wine.
I’m from Canada So I have experienced my fair share of winters. And I’m not talking rain, I’m talking perpetual -30 C and snowy for months. I am looking forward to relocating to somewhere warm but for the time being I enjoy the opportunity to read countless magazines, and books (or often in my case textbooks school. ugh) Watch endless movies, and addictive TV, wear sweatpants (VS pink, Juicy, and lululemon are the best!) and drink warm comforting drinks. Baking, playing board games, and sewing are all fun ways to wait out the storm! At home workout videos pass the time too…. and make you feel great
Write letters on fun stationary and move furniture around
I don’t know how I do it, honestly. I have a space heater at work that does wonders. I sleep. I eat. I watch Pride and Prejudice. I go tanning…. only once a month though (if that) b/c it’s harmful…. but the lights really help with seasonal depression. Oh goodness I don’t know!! Good luck!

I’m from Minnesota where twenty degrees in January qualifies as warm, and, for whatever reason, I decided to go to college in Indiana. It’s possibly even worse here. HOWEVER, I try to remember the good things about cold weather — even beyond the hot cookies, soup, and steaming showers
Think about what cold can mean — mittens, gloves, hats (for those who are so inclined — I’m not personally a hat person), and — my personal favorite — COATS. I’m loving the J.Crew Wool Ribbon Script Coat right now; it’s adorable.
And, of course, you can always qualify spending $4 on a cup of coffee because “it’s so cold and Starbucks was the only thing nearby!”
http://www.winksmilestyle.blogspot.com
Layers, lots of layers! That way even though it is cold, you can manage still trucking around outside.
It’s so funny, I’ve been feeling the same way. I absolute love rain; but now that we’ve had it for days on end it’s starting to get tiring. There’s only so many movies you can watch and books you can read – I want to go out!!
*absolutely
ha! i just blogged about it today… http://www.hellomynameislindseyloo.blogspot.com
Winter sometimes never seems like it’s going to end here in Chicago, soooo I find myself doing the following….
-lighting some 3-wick candles from bath & body works. the summer scents smell amazing & they burn down perfectly even!
-taking a nice loong bath with lavender scented Epsom salt.
-MUSIC! playing my favorite jams & dancing silly around the house.
-yes, soups rock, but i love a good beef stew w/ a little bit of rice
-CHILI. i could probably eat chili-mac everyday.
Happy Friday!

Coffee. Workout. Eat comfort foods (mac n’cheese, soup, pot roast, stick-to-your-ribs kinda stuff, then see: workout), and someone else said nail polish – the brighter the better. Best of luck, and love your blog, <3 Megan

I live in Balto. Md, and our weather is usually hideous in winter. Rainy, icy, but no pretty snow to look at.
My solution? Try to see the beautiful and enjoyable parts of the bad weather. Wear fun and layered warm clothing. Spend a day pretending to be Goth or something and write poetry about the gray skies while visiting a neat old cemetary. Eat warm food, put a fire in the fireplace, turn on yellow lights inside during the day, and go for walks outside. Carry an umbrella and spin it while walking (one of my ultimate favorite things to do since I never had an umbrella as a kid–strangers have taken my picture doing this =D ) Bare tree branches can make beautiful lines against the sky, and rain does smell nice.
Since skiing isn’t an option (that’s what we do in NH!) I would say get yourself set up with some fun craft projects. I get more sewing done January – March then the whole rest of the year! (If only I could convince my friends and family to wait for christmas presents in February) I also spend a lot of time planning my Valentine’s for my loved ones. I don’t care what anyone says, when its cold you need that Hallmark holiday to look forward to! And just think, here in NH we suffer through the winter and THEN deal with rain for 2-3 months. FUN
Personally I am a cold weather winter person…I love it. I think my whole mindset is to embrace the weather and of course, plan fabulous outfits to go with; think furry boots and coats with plush scarves and hats…then just do whatever you would do on any other day (in your case…an 80 degree weather day). There is nothing more refreshing than breathing in cold air.
not sure if someone said this already, but take a vitamin D pill daily, it will make up for the lack of sunshine and improve your mood.
Do some more arts and crafts projects like a new coffee table or some more jewelry! staying busy is just what’s best. also most people hate driving in this time, but I think a roadtrip’s in order! Just drive super safe of course!

I’m a California native, and is currently working in Shanghai. And has been freezing for the past 3 months! Right now, its 41 degrees. Tips for not going crazy being a home body…hit the sauna or a message! In China, you can get foot messages while watching a movie! Kinda cool.
Great blog, impeccable fashion sense, and I am so glad I stumbled across it, it is one of the few that is not restricted by the great firewall of China.
Have people over!! Have a theme party!! Being bored alone only adds to winter blues…for instance, a friend of mine had people over with tons of food but made it byob so everyone had their own liquor available. Once everyone had a few drinks, we played Mad Gab (which, by the way, is the best board game on the market to play with a group of friends, particularly after a few cocktails
)
Andddd I had a theme birthday party in the fall but it can work just as well now. It was an Alice In Wonderland theme party in which I pushed tables together to make one long table with teapots filled with Sweet Tea Vodka & Lemonade (delish!) and tons of desserts and food. A lot of people dressed up, decorating was super fun and it was a great time.
I just may seem that I’m a liquor pusher haha…but I am more pushing fun, food and friends…it’s always a great combo to beat the blues!!
Olga
PS…hot chocolate ALWAYS rules…and you can experiment and create your own concoctions with it! Tequila Rose Liquor and hot chocolate is delish as well (I know, I know…liquor again haha
)
Hey just found your blog!
I live in NC and our winter usually are pretty mild but thisyear the entire South has been hit hard with winter weather. I’ve found its a good time to catch up on books, call old friends, and COOK! My roommate and I instead of going out to eat have been trying recipes with things we already have in the fridge. Last week she made homemade spaghetti sauce and last night we used it to make a homemade pizza!
I’m originally from Sardinia, a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean. Despite having lived in NY, Copanhagen and Switzerland, cold weather still doesn’t feel like second nature to me. My coping mechanisms push me to prepare for winter by amassing books, DVDs, exercise equipment and making sure all my magazine subscriptions are up to date and I have a supply of organic black tea and Lindt chocolate
I feel your pain, I would rather have snow any day than rain. Rain is nice once in a while when you want to hibernate, but it gets old fast. I like the snow because I can still go running outside. It is very refreshing and doesn’t make winter seem as bad.
youtube videos + more… check out my post on it…

I adore your blog. Here, in Barcelona, it’s beyond freezing, and raining all of the time. Makes me miss the U.S., but at least it’s not the horrid cold of NYC.

Having survived the brutal winters of Central New York and Boston I’ve learned a few tips that make the winters breeze by like spring. In the winter I love to lay back and indulge in all the small comforts that other wise I wouldn’t have time for or want to do…
So I:
Learn a new language
Watch foreign films with subtitles
Take Pictures
Dig through old keepsake boxes
scrapbook
listen to radio shows
play outside in the snow
go sledding
bake lots treats
lock myself up into a room with tons of books
stay at a book store until closing time
find inventive ways to use old clothes
then; sew, knit, crochet, quilt
sell what I make on etsy
Clean out garage
sell unused items on ebay/amazon
make homemade pizza, bread
learn a new instrument practice an old one
organize closet
go to a crafts store Hobby Lobby or Michaels and let my mind run free
beading, pottery…
journaling all of these simplicities
So that’s what I do happy winter!
Maybe you could ethnic up the comfort food for some spice (pun intended). Like make some warm cinnamon and rice pudding with a cup of coffee or green tea.
I live in Oregon. I’ve been here so long I’m used to feeling like poop in the winter. I try to stay away from carbs and get some exercise.
First: LA weather condition can not be called winter. Never. Second: Ingnore the weather, add a umbrella to your outfit and go on with normal life! Low tempratures/rain/wind are no excuse for changing lifestyle or hiding indoors…. There is a saying in Germany: There is no bad weather, there’s just wrong clothing.
Thanks for a great site! Love it! Winter? Here in Northern Wisconsin we’re really into our winter sports: hockey, skating, Nordic skiing. After an afternoon outside in the subzero we have cocktails, roaring fire, and watch more hockey on TV! Plus we love our warm indoor Malls for spending chilly snowy Saturdays shopping the day away! Depsite living in the tundra we ladies love our fashion too! Thanks! Linda
Hi! I love reading your blog so I’ve given you a Sunshine Award! Read my entry for more details.
have a great day,
Cristina
indianapolis here.. fab winter accessories, board games with the hubs, and spray tans keep me somewhat sane.
love your blog! xoxo.
I live in England, where it rains about 9 months of the year(or at least it seems that way.) I just get my self a bright coat (this year its a purple one) and a big umbrella and go about life as usual. Plus I get to buy as many winter accessories as i want and have an excuse to buy lots of caramel macchiatos-have to keep the hands warm. The best thing about winter though, is wrapping up warm, putting the fire on and sitting by the window with a nice cup of tea watching the rain pour x
i love all these suggestions. i live in socal too and am going to venture out and do some of these things….well until the sun comes out..which will probably be next week..ha ha

yes, indeed it has been a real mess here in LA..but i kinda loved it…oh and i suggest trying tofuya in sawtelle….best korean kimichi soup everrrrr…especially during the cold winter rain
i live in london and if it’s not raining then it’s freezing so inside is definitely the preferred choice! i have a stack of dvds, mags and books which i attempt to get through when not on the web browsing blogs… otherwise i clear out my wardrobe, look at outfits i haven’t worn together for style inspiration and get a pile of cast offs ready for ebay! tea and biscuits are another must-have although i’m now craving hot and sour soup!!
I live in Chicago, enough said. But I have found that spending an hour or two in the museum is wonderful for the spirit. Our Art Institute is gorgeous and inside, I’m immersed in beauty and creativity. I know Los Angeles has great art museums (LACMA and MOCA), so I would highly recommend getting a membership so you have the freedom to enjoy them any day you want.
Here’s what you have to look forward to: http://broadartfoundation.org/
Also, a yoga class in a beautiful zen studio! If you’re not currently a practitioner, find a level 1 or “flow” type class.
Good luck!
Wow…these are fab ideas! It’s actually raining here in NYC. Last time we had a rainy weekend, my girlfriends and I threw a dance party in her apt. It was one of the most fun we had being in doors on a Saturday night…and we didn’t even spend a dime!
I moved from california to the interior of alaska. When it’s too cold to even drive the car I stay in and put on hawaiian radio or ska. Yesterday it was only twenty below zero F and I finished up an art project and played with my rabbits.
I think photography helps. Some days I’ll give myself a challenge to find a warm perspective despite the weather. It takes your brain out of the “it’s too cold” mentality to the, “omg look at how pretty the sunshine looks on the mountains, soft pinks/yellows/blues and whites”.
Omg! Are you serious
? It’s ZERO °C out here in Belgium en we’re wearing like 5 layers! And you’re wearing dresses and skirts without thights! You’re lucky you know

DIY/sewing projects. i’m pretty obsessed, i could spend literally all of my rainy days going through my wardrobe & making tweaks here & there!
xoxo
From VT:
working two jobs to stay busy (and build a nest egg for an imminent move), skiing and snowshoeing in my rare, glorious free time. Get outside and breathe in that fresh air, doesn’t matter the temperature or humidity level, it’ll do your body good.
Also, learning how to sew (finally) as of yesterday, in the hopes of picking up ^ Lauren’s hobby.

I live in the Pacific Northwest so we get quite a bit of rain and cold weather! I try and get friends or family to come over if I’ve been cooped up for a while. Sometimes you just have to brave the weather for your own sanity!

FASHION. ART. CULTURE.
I live in Utah, where winter is about 6 months long. Every January, I do something crazy to keep from going nuts… last year I painted my living room fuschia. This year I dyed my hair from blonde to red. It really helps!
i live in ohio. it’s yucky. you just have to a. have a sunny vacay to look forward to b. not feel guilty about how much tv you watch for 3+ months and c. praise the lord for Uggs.
Growing up in Michigan and now living in New York, I could create a blog dedicated to cold-weather remedies…here are a few of my faves:
*My fave family tradition!
1. Throwing on Grandma’s fur just to go a block to Dwane Reade. I’ll stock up on magazines, new nail polish in cheery colors, peanut-butter m & m’s (my weakness in life) and park it on the couch for the afternoon listening to one of the 50 new playlists I’ve created in the past few dreary months.
2. Spending hours on Epicurious.com and testing out recipes on my oh-so-grateful roommate.
3. Planning sunny vacations. This weekend I booked a flight for Easter on Kiawah Island, SC
4. Long weekend brunches with the girls. In my mind there is nothing that a few bellini’s, bloody’s, and a good omlet cannot fix!
5. Cupcakesandcashemre.com. You’ve inspired me to start my own blog but am working on a personal issue better known as procrastination, so maybe once I figure that out I’ll have a new link for fashionistas and epicureans combined.
Until then!
ohboy…I’ve been hearing complaints from all my west coast friends since last week about the rain and cold…meanwhile, here in NYC we’ve been freezing our toesies off for months with no end in sight. and today it started raining! at least it was sunny the last few days…I find myself hoping for snow bc at least it’s not cold and rainy and completely depressing.
I do much of the same as you…wear boots, drink soup, stay in and watch movies…but I also take advantage by wearing cosy sweaters, fun cold-weather boots, going to a museum or a gallery in the city, going shopping, seeing a movie with a friend, reading a book, working on photos, taking photos…I love photos in the rain…
indoor tanning! It’s amazing what a boost of uvb can do for you during perpetually gray times. Just don’t burn. Use good lotion. And never turn into the old lady from Something About Mary. That’s just wrong.
I live in London and it’s perpetually damp and gray and chilly. Today I spent 6 hours designing and painting a cheap pair of white sneakers. It was incredibly engrossing and now I have fabulous new shoes!
I wish I could say the same… I’m in Perth Australia and I can’t take much more heat! Its 30′celsius + every day and the sun just won’t stop shining from 4.50am – 8.50pm and it’s killing me.. I gaze at the scarves on the back of my door, my spare closet of coats… I die..
http://www.spoiltforstyle.blogspot.com
You would think my lovely state of Ohio isn’t really that harsh in the winter months..but that is a terrible lie!!!
Each day it’s a suprise as to what the weather will be, one day it may be barely snowing and by that evening there are a couple of inches, or it will be slightly warm, like 40 degrees and pouring rain…and then the next day it will be brillantly sunny but bitterly cold…mother nature is a tricky one!
However…my best way to cope is pretty simple, adorable rain boots (pink n white polka dots work well for me!), super comfy snow boots that never look cute but at least they’re warm and colorful scarves in bright colors like yellow and bright blue. Of course, Starbucks doesn’t hurt either
Stay warm dry and happy!
xo <3 Crazy A.
Liquor delivery service, upbeat music and a cute pair of boots can go a long way ha ha. I live in MN, where the motto is less about lemons and more along the lines of, “when life gives you blizzards, make snow angels” but even so, at some point the only cure is a good vacation.
OOOOHMYGOD.
It’s 17 degrees in New York right now.
It beyond sucks.
Sadie at heymamas
Try under 10 degrees here in MN and it’s ice raining so not only are we freezing we have to worry about safety on the roads as well! I usually do as many projects as I can inside (sort through mags, sew, catch up on mending). I HATE winter so I’m solving that problem in about 6 months, I’m joining you in LA!!! So excited!
