I’m a firm believer that a pair of sunglasses can completely transform your entire look. Sometimes that’s a bad thing, as was the case with the massive white shades I sported all throughout college. Since then, I’ve learned from my mistakes and now adhere to a few simple rules to ensure that I find a pair of glasses that fits just right.
1. Know your face shape (and the frames that are most flattering). These shades were literally the first pair that I tried on in the store since I knew that the updated Wayfarer’s size and slight angle would work for me. Anything overly circular or too small is not my friend. Neither are yellow tinted frames (another thing I learned while browsing through old pictures from high school).
2. Be aware of what’s current, but don’t splurge on anything too trendy. I’m all about the cat-eye trend, but I’m also am not going to dish out an exorbitant amount of money on something that will be outplayed in several months.
3. Pay attention to colors. This includes your hair, skin tone, eye color and the clothes you tend to wear. Since I’m blond with light eyes, I only buy black glasses as I find it makes the most dramatic statement.

i find my round face is particularly difficult to shop for. i wish i had the kind of face to rock any kind of sunnies, but alas!! i haven’t seen those ray-bans before. must be brand new. they look awesome on you xx

My problem with choosing sunglasses is that my face is small and so even though I love big frames I have to find one’s that don’t overpower it — otherwise I look like a bug which is really not the desired look I’m going for

such an informative post as i myself have so much trouble being indecisive about which frames to buy. i more often times than not leave the store frustrated with promises of “buying a pair next year.” it’s so much easier finding a stunning pair of shoes- those can transform anyone regardless of face shape.
Those are great on you. I’m a big sunglasses kind of girl- they work on my face shape, and I prefer them that way!
I love wearing sunglasses and always get them at a store where they recommend the exact style/shape for me

A few years ago I bought some quite expensive sunglasses from D&G, but I still love them everytime I put them on <3
They are black (since I’m pale and blonde too) and with sharp edges. Circular doesn’t work for me at all!
They are probably my best buy ever!

I tend to stick to the cheapo sunglasses but buy a ton of them – different colors, styles so it gives my weardrobe some variety. My favs are from UO and Target.

I love the updated wayfarers. I have found with most Ray Bans that they look good on just about anyone who wears them.
Oh man, no matter what I’m wearing, I can throw on a pair of Gucci sunglasses and feel amazing immediately.
Great advice Emily! As much as Ray Ban’s are popular, they never fit my face right. So alas, I’ll never wear the cute wayfarer’s as well as you do.

You should try the Wayfarer in tortoise. I luv, luv, luv Ray Bans, but sometimes, I have to break away from my basic black.
I have the most impossible face shape to find sunglasses for. But I learned that Solstice trains all their employees on face shape, and they helped me find the perfect aviators from Ray-Ban to complement both my face shape and my skin tone.

My brown/gold aviators from Forever 21 are a lifesaver. I’ve been wearing the same pair for the last three years, and seriously couldn’t survive without them! They are the perfect shape and color for me. Every summer I buy at least three pairs to stock up! I dread the day they are discontinued!

How DO you get that effortlessly fabulous messy ponytail? It’s awesome.
I am an avid loser of sunglasses, so I can never buy too expensive of a pair, lest I absentmindedly leave them somewhere. I find that the oversized almost bug-eyed styles look best on me though, and have a $5 pair from Forever 21 that I adore.
I’m all about the cheap sunnies… I break them pretty consistently, so it seems like the best bet.

Great tips! I can never splurge on more than one pair at a time because my eyes are particular about lenses and the only brand I like are expensive.
It took me a long time to find a pair of sunglasses that I liked and that suited my face. And the funny thing is, the pair I settled on a couple years back (and still wear to this day) are a pair of MEN’S Ray-Bans I scored at a photo shoot!!
I love all your blogs!! Like everyone else, it took me a while to find the right shades for my face shape as well, so after searching and wasting money, i sure do love Gucci Aviators!! They are my ultimate favorites!

Such good tips… I love your vintage aves, but I rarely spend more than $15 on a pair of sunglasses solely because I know that they’ll either be lost or scratched in a matter of weeks! But I’m also all about the dark, dark classic styles and shapes.

you’re so right! I have a really long face so it’s difficult for me to find a well suited pair. when I find a pair I (try to!) keep them forever! Two years ago when I was in Argentina for a show I lost two of my favorite pairs…one pair of brown chanels (I still cry over these) and one black pair of DKNY that I bought on my honeymoon. I finally found another pair that I loved and those broke abot two weeks ago. dummy me I was forcing them on my face (not paying attention of course) and the plastic screw cracked. why doesn’t Jimmy Choo use metal screws?! boo. Now I have to find a way to get them fixed…in the meantime I’m using an old pair that I found a million years ago on Bluefly.

It is indeed important though choose the right eyeglasses as each set of frames has unique features that may make or break your looks. Love those Wayfarers btw!
