San Francisco Staycation

cavallo1.jpg

I’ve always loved the idea of staying in a hotel in my home town.  It’s terribly indulgent and a fun way to see the area in which you live in a completely new light. This past weekend I stayed at Cavallo Point, a historical hotel tucked right at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge, and minutes from where my parents still live.  I felt like I had permission to experience the area as a tourist and indulged in fresh crab, curled up by a fire (instead of simply turning on the heat) and watched the sun set into the Bay.

Have you ever had a “staycation” in your own town?

Nope, I’ve never had a staycation, but I love the idea! Perhaps I’ll try it one of these days:) Gorgeous pics of San Francisco! I miss visiting the city.

2 hannahlizabeth { 10.27.09 at 1:39 am }

no but it’s a good idea! i’m going to san fran in 3 weeks, so excited!

3 Adriana { 10.27.09 at 1:41 am }

I’ve never done it, but my home town in Australia is too small! Maybe here in Dubai I would do it, definitely! I have always loved San Francisco, can’t wait to see it one day. This place is lovely!

4 Peaches and Cream { 10.27.09 at 3:17 am }

That’s a great idea! What great photos. Like Adriana, I’m from Aus too, and I am all too aware of exactly how boring my town is, but I’ve had to show visitors around, which is kind of a similar experience, trying to figure out what people might find interesting. Definitely different if you live somewhere cool like San Francisco. Lucky you!

That looks absolutely lovely! When I was little, we would sometimes stay in a hotel in Boston for a treat. We would get room service and swim in the pool, and it was always so much fun.

Great idea! I haven’t done it in my town because one night in our local hotel is a weeks holiday in Spain! I live in a stupidly expensive part of the South East of England!

7 Pretty Little World { 10.27.09 at 4:28 am }

I’ve never done it, though there’s a charming bed and breakfast in the city, and I’ve always wanted to stay there! Perhaps after this post I’ll look into it!

amazing. i lived down in mountain view this past summer; i miss being able to ride the train up to san francisco.

This is gorgeous. I am going to San Fran in Jan so I am on the look out for posts like this one. I’ve stayed in a few hotels in my hometown (Toronto) but I want to try a few b&bs next time! XOXO

10 cindy khor { 10.27.09 at 5:20 am }

nope, never tried that before, maybe i should try it and experience the tourisy side of my own home, and that would certainly be whole lot of fun, not to mention a good scolding from parents who think that its a waste of money.

11 Hola!Design { 10.27.09 at 5:23 am }

I’ve always wanted to do that!! excepy there’s nothing to do here in Bayonne, NJ, but I could do that in Hoboken, they just opened a new W hotel there and I heard is super nice..

12 Kelly @ Dare to be Domestic { 10.27.09 at 5:25 am }

This is beautiful, and a great idea. With today’s economy most people are doing this and I think it’s a great idea! We are heading to New Orleans this weekend for Halloween – not exactly a staycation but… with it only being 8 hours away and having gas split 4 ways it truly helps make it semi feel like one! ox

13 Linda { 10.27.09 at 5:28 am }

YEP! I have done that in Niagara falls a few times. I good way to get away but really only an hour drive from Toronto…
Love stay-cations.

14 Ashley { 10.27.09 at 5:29 am }

love this :) im going to San Fran in 2 weeks! Any great recommendations to do/see?

15 Vivian { 10.27.09 at 5:38 am }

Wonderful landscape!! I did try a staycation downtown Montreal, it was so much fun!

16 erin { 10.27.09 at 5:41 am }

oh my goodness. the hotel looks beautiful! beautiful photos, as ever.

17 Jéss Nogueira { 10.27.09 at 5:41 am }

I loved the idea!
I live in Sao Paolo, and i’ll do that for sure!

18 Stella { 10.27.09 at 5:46 am }

I have never do it, but it has to be funny and different. I have seem that my blog has disapear from your blog roll (I think it was…), could you add me, please? Kiss

19 Sal { 10.27.09 at 5:57 am }

I’ve stayed in a B&B 45 minutes from my house … does that count? ;)

20 paula { 10.27.09 at 6:25 am }

sounds like a lovely time.

21 Amy Reads Good Books { 10.27.09 at 6:27 am }

Hmm, it looks like your neck of the woods would be a little more fun for a staycation! However, there’s an incredible Art Deco hotel in Cincinnati that we plan to stay at for a celebration dinner if (and hopefully when) I get tenure!

22 Talk Pretty To Me { 10.27.09 at 6:33 am }

I haven’t ever had a stay cation in my town because its so small there is really no reason not to stay at home. Plus, there is like one possibly two hotels. The view from your hotel looks great though!

I’ve had a stay-cation in my own town before! (Southampton) It’s great because you feel like your in a completely different world. It’s nice to get away (even if it’s close by) sometimes.

24 ezmy { 10.27.09 at 6:45 am }

Yes! Twas a lovely experience. Stayed at a fancypants hotel and made an effort to try new restaurants and go see touristy things (parliament buildings and galleries, etc). Highly recommended.

25 Dina's Days { 10.27.09 at 6:53 am }

How fun. That place is beautiful. I’m planning a staycation in Amish Country 40 minutes south of me for a mini winter getaway in a cabin.

26 Jacqueline { 10.27.09 at 6:57 am }

That’s such a great idea Emily!

I live in a small, historic town with a ton of gorgeous b&bs/inns – I was just lamenting the other day that I am jealous of the visitors I see with their luggage in front of these places…maybe I should just bite the bullet and do it anyway!

28 Lynn { 10.27.09 at 7:38 am }

I’ve always loved the idea of a staycation! Helps bring the hometown new and fresh! Except Dallas is nowhere near as nice as SF and Cavallo Point!!

29 Julia { 10.27.09 at 7:40 am }

Good for you! I think that’s a brilliant idea!

30 Kwil { 10.27.09 at 8:01 am }

Love this idea… but I can’t justify spending money at a hotel when I pay loads in rent in the same city…

31 Haute Teapot { 10.27.09 at 8:31 am }

I definitely have, in downtown Charleston, SC. It was lovely and we stayed at the French Quarter Inn–complete with cocktail hour, a fireplace, bubble bath, bike rides to The Battery, warm cookies and cold milk at night, and breakfast in bed in the morning. It was a prefect weekend and I understood why tourists find the city so charming. Your photos are beautiful–I’ll have to check that place out next time I’m in San Francisco.

32 Wanderlusting { 10.27.09 at 8:31 am }

That’s where Kim Novak jumped into the Bay in Vertigo (my fav movie) – I actually traveled to that spot just for THAT reason! Old Fort Point…San Fran is my fav US city, can’t wait to move there one day (you know, when I have money and success :P ).

I’ve done tons of staycations in Vancouver…normally though to a nearby island where I rent a cottage for a romantic escape with my sweetie or by myself to do some writing.

33 mart and lu { 10.27.09 at 8:42 am }

no i haven’t but it looks like so much fun!

I am itching to do so! I love seeing all the pics of the Ace Hotel here in Portland, OR. Although it is practically next door to my office so perhaps I should choose a part of town I frequent less often :)

36 Henriette { 10.27.09 at 9:24 am }

Oh, what a lovely place! Reminds me of the house in “The Notebook”. What a clever idea, staycation! I suppose it is exciting in San Francisco, but not as interesting in a small town in Norway where I live. I really like your blog! And your how-to’s are really helpfull!

37 Cafe Fashionista { 10.27.09 at 9:42 am }

You have just made me crave a staycation – and one which involves the comforts of a cozy hotel as opposed to my own bedroom! :)

38 cupcake.trash { 10.27.09 at 9:44 am }

Awwww that place looks beautiful. I live in Santa Cruz less than 1 1/2 hours from there! I will check it out

I’ve never staycationed, but you’ve inspired me. Next time I go home to Ohio. :)

great comments on this post. now that im in new england, it kinda always feels like im on vacation since it’s so green and there are all these quaint small towns. very different from my home town of chicago!

44 fat mum slim { 10.27.09 at 11:30 am }

We do it a few times a year, and love it. The last time we did it was with my wee daughter for my birthday. She ended up getting sick and we had such a terrible time {only at night}. I’d love to do it again, so she can explore a bit more and we can have a better time.

45 Lexie { 10.27.09 at 11:39 am }

i’ve never, but I want to do it! every since the trump tower opened in Chicago I’ve wanted to stay there for a weekend!

48 Raquelita { 10.27.09 at 12:10 pm }

Glad to know I’m not the only one. When we lived in Edinburgh, we’d spend a night at a hotel (Malmaison, Tigerlily) every now and then just to get away from life for a mini-while.

49 Corks & Caftans { 10.27.09 at 12:13 pm }

Shut up… these pictures are incredible. And I LOVED your shopbop Q&A! I’m on there tomorrow… wut wut! :)

50 Dennise { 10.27.09 at 12:44 pm }

My boyfriend is from a small town in Michigan and last weekend we went to visit and stayed in a small motel right by the beach. It was the first time he’d ever stayed at a hotel in his hometown and we had a great time. It was cheap too. xo

51 Girl in the loft { 10.27.09 at 1:50 pm }

such a nice cozy idea!! i definitely want one now. i think it’s very important to get away sometimes and this is a great way to do it. love the pictures.

52 Melissa { 10.27.09 at 1:53 pm }

Love that you were literally in ‘my backyard’! We walk our pug and little sweet crumb here every morning since it is only 2 miles from our house. Such a phenomenal place!

53 alexandra { 10.27.09 at 2:17 pm }

you’re from here?!?! wow that is so exciting and inspirational! i’ve never stay-cay’ed in the city, but i did it in montreal once (where i went to university) and it was ahhh-mazing!

54 Melissa { 10.27.09 at 2:20 pm }

I always wanted to do this too. The hotel is my town is right now the street from my house, within walking distance, actually! :)

55 Adrianna from A Cozy Kitchen { 10.27.09 at 2:21 pm }

My parents live in Miami and I’ve always dreamed of staying at The Delano or some place in South Beach. I think you might’ve convinced me!

56 All Women Stalker { 10.27.09 at 2:28 pm }

Well, I’ve never stayed in a hotel in my own city but I love doing the tourist thing. Stop at tourist sites. Buy souvenirs. Haha

Yes! Whenever I travel back home to Denver, instead of staying with family (under the guise of not wanting to ‘put them out’), I love to stay at the amazing boutique hotel The Magnolia.

It’s lush, modern, romantic and located within walking distance to many fun eateries, bars and the coolest things downtown Denver has to offer.
