Rules of Summer
In the same way that you’re practically obligated to make holiday cookies in December, there’s a separate set of rules for summer. Every year I make a list of things that I’d like to accomplish before Labor Day. They aren’t complicated and instead should be carefree and full of fun little indulgences to help savor the warmest months of the year. Here’s the list that I’ve come up with so far…what do you hope to do this summer?
1. Attend an outdoor concert
2. Make homemade ice cream with fresh fruit
3. Create a playlist of songs I’m listening to this summer
4. Take walks after dinner at least three times a week
5. Make time to meet up with girlfriends for Sunday brunch
6. Sneak into a fancy hotel pool
7. Visit Stinson Beach (my favorite spot in Northern California)
8. Attend some sort of food festival
9. Donate the summer clothes that I don’t end up wearing
10. Master my own signature cocktail
Have a fabulous weekend!

Oh boy, I have been put to shame, I need to stretch myself a bit more.
I said I’d have my first giveaway which I’m doing today – an Hermes book if anyone’s interested and I’m going to have a July 4th dinner – I’m in UK, so that’s not so usual here!
What a great list….. i need to make one too!
it will include: find a new flat, learn to use my camera and photoshop, going to a music festival… etc

Ohh boy…that is a very good list…I am planning to attend a few great wine festivals. Enjoy a beautiful outdoor swimming pool near us and make fresh, homemade lemonade each morning

Good list? I think so

yes definetely. I always have sunday brunch with my girls. Brunches are so cheap and yummy in Berlin
oh, and i´m always creating a playlist with my summer songs, coz i need to drive down the highway, open my windows and singing out loud to my songs. Fortunately we can drive without limit in Germany, it´s lotz of fun especially with the right music

I love the idea of having your own signature drink… You’ve inspired me to create my own list!
I’d love to Barcelona again this summer. But it would be a miracle if it happens
Hahaha – love rule number 6! I’ll have to try that one day! Great list – enjoy summer!
so cool. it’s certainly awesome to have you as a friend, since i love to to all the same stuff. thx for inspiration. xx
Aw I know a bunch of those I’ll be able to do(concert, food fest etc), but as for my own list, I just want to get to dive into our wedding planning, relax relax relax, go to my boat more than once this summer (this gets harder as not enough weekends), enjoy the giant park I live beside, eat the best lobster and chowder in P.E.I Canada on our road trip, bike a few hours a week, get a tan again, make chicken curry, get a big painting for our living room, bbq, and enjoy more time with friends
p.s donate your summer digs, or some, to me and then I’ll pass them on again after wards. closet swaps? Love your style, and budget tight for the wedding. :p

Great list! My number 1. Find an internship!
Beacause of my master’s thesis I’m supposed to work on nowadays, I’ve only managed to accomplish two things from your list so far…
Just a couple of weeks more and I’ll make up for it, though!!!
Thanks for sharing!

Lists really work. They help you not waste time when you could be having fun or doing something constructive. I made a list when I was on leave from work and it really worked!
Your list sounds like so much fun. I’m sure you’ll keep us updated on how far you get.
Nice list! We have a neighborhood pool and I haven’t even been yet, so I want to spend some time there.
I make lists for my weekends, but I should definitely do one for the summer. What a good idea! I think I might try to master the signature drink.
Oooh Stinson beach is a great choice !! Me and the hubby are going there in August for our anniversary;) Homemade ice cream is a close second:)
great list! I can’t decide which thing I would want to do first!!
I agree with your summer rules, but I think that the best rule is to chill out!! ^^
Great list! Number 5 is my favorite.

Thank yyou for sharing this little list of summer rules. I’ll keep them in mind even if I’m afraid that visiting the beach in Northern California would be difficult considering that I’ll be in Italy and Northern Europe the whole summer!

I just bought a Cuisinart ice-cream maker, so #2 on your list is totally happening for me too (peach ice cream!).
AHHHH reminds me i should get an ice cream maker soon

Ah no ur list has just depressed me…Its winter in South Africa *sniff, sniff*! At least i’m having some front row world cup action though!
Ah I love to do lists! This summer my ultimate goal is to go on a cupcake crawl in chicago!
My list is:
Go for walks after dinner and watch the sun set.
Drink beer on a patio.
Go for a boat ride in the Atlantic ocean.
Visit my mom in NH (NH Summers are the best!).
I can’t wait to see your ice cream!
I love this list. What a great idea!
I would love to go to a nice beach….
jen
http://blankwhiteframes.blogspot.com
perfect list! i think my summer signature drink would have to be something with lemonade and vodka something like at sams in tiburon.
i also want to go to lake tahoe this summer. i’ve never been during the summer. oh if my friends and i could charter a boat and sail around the sf bay and under the gg bridge and to sausalito on one of san francisco limited nice summer days that would be a amazing!
What a great idea for the summer! I always feel like the few summers months slip away so quickly, and I never really get to do all of the things I was hoping to do. I love your last goal; I’ve never thought of that one before, but it’s great! Being a New Yorker, I would also add go to at least 3 rooftop/decktop bars. There’s nothing like drinking outside on a warm summer night!

Organise a picnic with friends! Sounds so easy but it’s not! Trying to get everyone together is so hard.
That’s a very good list of things. On top of my list is – #1. Make time to have lunch with girlfriends during the summer. Great list and thanks for the ideas.
Want the easiest ice cream ever? It’s Ben and Jerry’s sweet cream base. You can add anything to it, or leave it plain. I love it because it is mild and light and has no cooking! In you you mixer add 2 cups heavy cream. Wisk in 3/4 c sugar a little at a time until blended. Wisk for 1 additional min. Add in 2/3 c half and half and wisk to combine. Then pour into your ice cream maker. Easy and yummy!
Oooh that is such a great list! I love it

I love your list! I may have to steal #2, 6, 9 + 10. I have actually stolen some time in a swanky hotel jacuzzi but a pool in the light of day would be an bigger accomplishment:) Just got a new Will+Son. ice cream maker too so very excited about my 1st homeade scoops! Thanks for sharing

Great list of summer things to do!
I will like to take a road trip this summer
http://www.modhumanvintage.com
i agree with all of those things. Except the homemade ice cream (I just don’t have that talent!)
might head off to the beach tonight and take our puppy – he’s never played in the ocean
so i’m excited!
have a great weekend!

I can’t wait for summer to come back to Australia! This post makes me miss it <3
You’re so right. Every season comes with its tradition and things that need to happen, or else it doesn’t seem right. I just need to take several trips to the shores of Lake Erie this summer, go on a beach vacation to Charleston, and celebrate my birthday/the 4th of July and everything will seem right in the world.
Such a great list! Have fun accomplishing it!

That list sounds great. I’ve always wanted to make homemade ice cream.
Love your list! Mine include a girls weekend trip (check!), hosting a summer party on my rooftop, and getting back up on a wakeboard (it’s been a couple years!)
http://asequindressatbreakfast.wordpress.com
Love the walks after dinner…especially after I indulge in a JP Licks waffle cone with mint chip yogurt.
1. Bake cupcake flavors/styles that I haven’t tried before (I guess I accomplished that last night with my Michael Jackson cupcakes)
2. Try a new fresh fruit, boozy drink.
3. Read a few new chick lit books by the pool.
4. Watch some summer blockbusters!
5. Attempt to stay on top of the World Cup madness even though I’ve never watched before!
xx

brunch with girlfriends.. that’s always my fave…and sneaking into the pool, too cute!
http://mandalyzing.blogspot.com
Is it tacky to just copy your list? So much for originality… My list includes wearing breezy sundresses as much as possible, making the salted caramels you featured here awhile back, saving tons of money for school (which means working the majority of my waking hours), and spending as much time as I can with friends.
xo Josie
http://winksmilestyle.blogspot.com
Ooooooh!!! I love making lists…haven’t ever thought of making one for summer though…
1) Make raspberry ice cubes
Buy some daring eye shadow–something bright w/ glitter
2) Have my very own photo shoot in all of the favorite dresses that I hardly get to wear
3) Go to the pool in a bikini and high heels
4) Paint my night stand blue

9) Watch the last season of LOST on DVD with my hubby
10) See Resident Evil: Afterlife on opening night
Happy Friday!

Delightful Bitefuls
I love making lists of things to look forward to – it always helps me keep a positive perspective on things!
I think I’ll: see at least 2 movies, master cooking Spanish food, and go hiking (or just generally enjoy being outside in the Boston heat!)
Uh, I’m up for that food festival. Beautiful picture by the way.

Hmm, well so far my list includes going to Martha’s vineyard, going to this flea market in hells kitchen, find a good farmers market an walk over the Brooklyn bridge! Love summer
xoxo Ashley
What a fabulous idea! A list of summer things is definitely something I’m going to do which will hopefully make sure I do get to enjoy summer and not just work the whole time!!
That’s an amazing list and right on the money with all these things being total summer essentials! Although i will have to settle for an east coast beach seeing as california is a tad too far for my montrealer self
Have a great weekend! xx

SUch a great idea – coming up with fun summer activities… I shall have to do the same, although I will say that I have already accomplished the outdoor concert: was fabulous.
if you love stinson beach.. you should really check out muir beach or even bolinas. Muir is my favorite, but i love bolinas because not a lot of people know about it. Both are such a beautiful trip to get to..

we have some of the same summer goals! Thanks for the list of fun things! I think I’m now going to add “sneak into a fancy hotel pool” to mine for the summer.
oooh LOVE this idea! I plan on seeing as many free concerts in the park that I can (since I’m in NYC), taking too many summer photos and eating as much watermelon as I can! gosh, I love summer-time!
list – amazing idea! signature cocktail idea – best. ever.
great inspiration. most of the time I have so much on my mind that I forget to take some time for things I love. A signature cocktail would be a great start
hmm, you’re like the second blog i’ve read about setting summer goals, and i like the concept! I think i’ll definitely add a signature summer cocktail, b/c i am the resident chef/mixologist amont my circle of friends. the summer play list goes w/o saying. and i’ve now decided to take my dog on his evening walk immediately after dinner, b/c i eat pretty late. Thanks for the inspiration, Emily!
Hey Emily – I know the thrill of sneaking in is unbeatable, but if you don’t feel like stressing, the Ritz Carlton pool in Marina del Rey is open to the public, and I think they’re still doing their summer Sunday pool parties! The hotel was built on public land, so they are required to allow the public in — but so few people know about it that it’s never crowded (well, until now!)!
Otherwise my vote is for the Standard downtown…
This is the perfect achievable summer list! Everyhting sounds fun, lovely or delicious!!xxxx

I love this list, Em! We always do this, too, and you know what…it just occurred to me that we haven’t yet. I’m so on it this weekend. And it will definitely include lots of mini staycations in the cute towns north of us. xo
As a fellow Marin girl, Stinson is one of my favorites too! It always tops my summer list – nothing like a hot hot (but rare) day at Stinson =D. The drive up Mount Tam is beautiful as well.
Thanks for the inspiring summer list!

How lovely is this!…quite possibly one of my favorite posts of yours…like, ever. Which is saying a lot, because I just adore this gorgeous blog of yours. Happy weekend + thanks for all the summertime inspiration.
All very worthy goals! And I’m willing to help out with the brunch one. : )
love the list! isn’t it funny how a certain playlist/song reminds you of that specific summer, forever. i’m planning on attending a food festival too, the Bite of Seattle! love it.
I love the idea of making a summer bucket list! I’m going to have to work on my own

2. Make some homemade strawberry lemonade.
3. Go on a picnic with my husband
I have a lot more I would like to do but we are so crazy with getting ready to go to Hawaii, that we haven’t done anything yet!

mine would be to:
make some new paintings
buy a few colorful summer nail polish shades
go to a nearby public pool at least once a month
try a new vegetable salad
I’ve never been to an outdoor concert but I’d love to go to one! I was so upset I missed Metric outside at Stanley Park, would’ve been great. I think I’ll make a list of my own!

Wonderful list!
I think I need to work on my own list.

All the best for you!

love your blog, so many pretty pictures
*sigh* unfortunately, summer just ended where I live
This is a great idea!! Think I’m also gonna make that!
I love lists like these! I’m trying to make the most of the English summer (which can be as temperamental as a spoilt child and therefore must be enjoyed while it’s at its best) by spending hours punting and lazing by the river in Cambridge, having picnics by the lake and feeding the ducklings in St James Park, walking the jasmine-scented streets of Mayfair, riding my bike at sunset and eating alfresco as much as possible.
Enjoy those lovely balmy days!

I need ideas for my summer music list! If you wanna ad your favorite tracks to http://open.spotify.com/user/kjersms/playlist/3bRuAqYDBGUHC9ZoU2J2Bx it would be great!!
I try making a list as well. I like to eat water ice (philly pride yah!), take day trips, lay on the beach for long periods of time, celebrate the 4th of july and I also give away old summer clothes I am in the process of doing that right now!
Agreed! Love 4,5 & 8.
