Rules of Summer – Part 3

May 10th, 2012

Summer’s just a few weeks away, so it’s only fitting that I’ve already started to think about some of the things I want to do before Labor Day. Since I’m a sucker for a to-do list (you can see past summer checklists here and here), I’ve compiled the ten things I’d most like to accomplish this upcoming season.

1. Visit a pick-your-own-berries farm. Then make this.

2. Try out a shorter hairstyle (something I haven’t done since um, I was five years old).

3. Take a spontaneous weekend trip someplace I’ve never been (I’ve always wanted to go to Montana).

4. Host a backyard oyster shucking + champagne party.

5. Take tennis lessons.

6. String lights in the backyard for impromptu al fresco dining.

7. Take a pasta making class here.

8. Go to a drive-in movie theatre – I never have!

9. Make a gallery wall of photographs in our living room.

10.  Watch fireworks by the water in Sausalito (where I’d go every year as a kid).

I’d love to know – what are you most looking forward to this summer?

Wonderful list, Emily! I love to-do lists, as well, so this is a great reminder for me to get started on summer plans!
*beach day trips with my husband and daughter, who just discovered the joys of a sandpail and shovel
*eat plenty of lobster rolls + french fries
*host more spontaneous cocktails and dinners on our roofdeck with friends
*bake plenty of desserts using fresh fruits
*dare to try mint green polish on my fingers or toes :)
*finally try raw oysters + champagne, thanks to your suggestion. Thanks for that one!

Montana? No. If you have never been to Chicago in summer, that is what you must do. No better city to be in at that time of year. I have been to NY, L.A. and SFO, which I know you frequent/live-in. Trust me, nothing beats a Chicago summer. Just sayin…

    ah….smores! I can;t wait for camping weather

  • http://holly-closetomyheart.blogspot.com/ Holly

i’m shocked about never being to a drive-in movie! it’s a summer tradition around here! pack the car with all kinds of goodies and sweets, we sometimes sneak in some take-out too, as many pillows as the car allows and squeeze in your softest and most comfy blankets too…..that my friend is a drive-in movie.

Well, in Argentina it is winter time but despite the season it is always fun to try new things. I am studing italian language which was my dream for many years.

  • Erin O’Brien

So happy that going to a drive-in theater is on your list! I grew up in Iowa with a drive-in theater nearby. I have fond memories of seeing The Lion King and Batman Forever, among others, there. Unfortunately it was torn down about 10 years ago but it’s such a retro experience with memories that will last a lifetime!

  • Kelsey

Just thought I would add that Montana is gorgeous. I visited last summer and I think I fell in love. You should go. Glacier National Park. It’s breathtaking.

Emily, this is such a fun list! I love that it’s filled with great activities that you don’t have to do but rather would be a pleasure to do. Just reading through it made me so much more excited for summer (as if I wasn’t already! :P ), so a bunch of the items just went on my own (unwritten) list.

Hope you’re having a great day and week!
