Pumpkin Bread Pudding

September 28th, 2011

Have you ever disliked a certain food or dish before you’ve ever tried it? That was how I felt about bread pudding. Though I pretty much live for carbs (and bread certainly tops that list) and I love a good pudding, the idea of combining the two just didn’t sound appealing. That all changed the moment I heard about pumpkin bread pudding. Since it’s a little too early in the season for me to be whipping up pumpkin pies, this sounded like the perfect compromise. It made our place smell heavenly, took minutes to whip up, and the warm, spicy flavors made for an ideal counterpart to our brunch menu (and then later as dessert that night).

  4. This is a great idea for a brunch party where people expect comforting breakfast foods and sweater treats. I also love the idea of using pumpkin because it’s so flavourful and diverse – it’d be easy to whip up a couple of pumpkin souflees at the same time for all those guests who don’t dig the gluten – I imagine that’s a thing in L.A. too!

  5. I can smell it from here. Sigh.

  6. I’ve always held a prejudice against bread pudding too but put pumpkin in front of anything and I’m sold. Another great pre-pumpkin pie idea is pumpkin granola. I’m making some next week!

  8. I’m with you on the bread pudding thing. For me, it’s not so much that I don’t like it but if I’m going to splurge on dessert it’s not going to be bread pudding. However…put pumpkin in the mix and it’s a whole other story! I am admittedly a pumpkin whore. :) (I’m drinking a pumpkin latte as I write this!)

  9. Coming from Australia- pumpkin in a can looks very odd, not to mention using pumpkin as a dessert and drinking it. I’ll have to take your word for its deliciousness.

  34. Emily,

We are so on the same wavelength! I just wrote a blog post on how much I heart pumpkin. I am usually super disgusted by bread pudding, too, so glad to see this one turned out well. After reading my post, my friend passed along a pumpkin-bacon ravioli recipe that I’m dying to try! Love your blog.

  45. I’m late in seeing this post as I am barely catching up on blogs and magazines for the last few months. School, work, and starting a magazine can put one behind. I love you for posting this recipe. I live for this season and all it’s pumpkiny(I know not a word but still) goodness. I make wonderful pumpkin spice with white chocolate chip pancakes for my 2 sons every Sunday from Sept to the end of Nov. But then I alternate between egg nog and ginger bread ones. This will give me a new treat to make them (minus the alcohol). Thanks, they’ll love you for it, also. :)

  46. I made this for my boyfriend’s family last night. HUGE hit. Thanks for the idea!
