Cupcakes and Cashmere

Portland Bound

August 9th, 2011

Each year my fiancé and I try to visit at least one city that we’ve never been to before (back in March we went here). It’s a great way to explore new places and I love the idea of discovering favorite spots across the country. On Labor Day Weekend we’re heading to Portland with some friends and I seriously can’t wait. Usually our vacations are pretty chill and lack any sort of structure or organization, so I’m ready to have a set list of all the places we want to hit. If you have any recommendations (food, shopping, or otherwise), I’d be much appreciative of any tips!

P.S. Are you an organized traveler or do you prefer to just figure it out as you go along?

    LOVE LOVE LOVE P-TOWN!
    Here are some suggestions:
    - Rose Garden
    - Stanich’s Burgers
    - Oba
    - Henry’s
    - Kells Irish Pub
    - Kennedy School
    - PGE Park (If you are there on a Thursday, it is $1 beer night for the minor league baseball games)
    - Nike Town
    - Jake’s
    - Bar At The Nines Hotel Rooftop
    - Portland City Grill (highest in the city at a whopping 12 stories)
    - Skip Mothers. I ate there 3 times during xmas break trying to find something and the food was just meh!
    - Multnomah Falls
    - Veritable Quandry
    - If you want to go wine tasting, hit up: Domaine Serene, Erath Vineyards, Anne Amie
    - Elephants Delicatessan
    - Nuestra Cocina (BEST BEST BEST Mango Jalapeno Margaritas I have EVER had)

I am so jealous. There is way too much to do. Enjoy. xx

you HAVE to spend a day on hawthorne. It is YOU. start at Jam on hawthorne for breakfast (delicious chai blueberry pancakes and unique scrambles), spend the afternoon walking through house of vintage and vintage pink (AMAZING deals on clothing and home decor), and grab a sweet treat at the waffle window or the food carts. It is my favorite place in all of Portland.

I love you blog, style, images and food inspiration! Thanks for being a great break in the work day :) I’m sure someone has already said this, but Powell’s bookstore is an PDX fixture. St. Honore has amazing pastries, Voodoo Doughtnuts is a culty hipster place (but is actually delicious too), the Japanese gardens are amazing, and American Dream has some epic pizza. I think you will fall in love with the wackiness that is Portland!

Also, Saturday market! This is not your standard flea market–the items have to be hand crafted and you have to pass a panel before you are allowed to have a booth.

The food carts. I went to the cluster downtown, but there is another cluster a little south of downtown called “Cartopia” that I wished I had gone to. Also, just a short drive (30 minutes) east is Multnomah Falls… really pretty to see… a nice drive too!

Im from portland, so i couldn’t help but give you some tips…
    1. Voodoo dounut is the place TO GO. you HAVE to. no choice. however, there is a Voodoo and a Voodoo Too. I recommend Voodoo just because it’s more original and gives you more of the portland feel. That is also where you can find the ‘keep portland weird’ sign in case you wanted a picture. Voodoo Too is more standardized and has seating and stuff. Either is good, but i reccomend Voodoo that i believe is on 3rd ave.
    2. Saturday market!!!! it’s on saturdays and sundays. outstanding. amazing. the atmosphere is awesome, lots of people watching, lots of people in general, tons of music and food and great vendors. MUST.
    3. Portland City Grill, best place to eat. very expensive though. definitely for the fancier type.
    4. Slappy Cakes! It’s on morrisson street. you go there for breakfast and each table has a grill and you order a bottle of batter and toppings and cook your own pancakes!! so fun!
Im sure im forgetting something, but thats the main things!!
    enjoy!
