Paint The Town Red

redchair1.jpg

Remember how I mentioned that we found the perfect-sized settee at the Melrose Trading Post Flea Market this past Sunday?  Well here it is, in all of its red, over-the-top glory.  While we certainly didn’t have our hearts set on the color, once I noticed the intricate pattern and wood work, I was sold.  I love having a piece of furniture that makes a statement and I’m now on the hunt for some quirky pillows.   Any recommendations are very welcome!

Some kind of Turquoise beading on a round pillow would be so amazing against the red ethnic style of the settee. Your house is beyond chic!

i imagine a splash of warm colours like orange and yellow would be awesome but i mean you could work a LOT of colours with this kind of red. gorg.

Great piece! In the past I’ve found that Pier 1 has a good selection of pillows, but when I was on the hunt a few months ago I found some I LOVED at Target.

This chair is so bold. I love it! I also like how your walls match the color of the fabric. I couldn’t help but to notice your many shelves of books. I’ve always wanted a room full of books that I’ll never read…seriously.

Great post. Keep up the good work! :)

31 Chasing Beauty { 03.11.10 at 3:40 am }

I love you new red settee! Great find! And the rug…to die for! I also think that a pop of turquoise would be amazing against the red. Maybe in a zig zag, ikat, or even a custom monogramed pillow from Jonathan Adler? Check out http://www.fabricadabra.com
They have some really great options, that aren’t horribly expensive.

45 Rachel Machen { 03.11.10 at 5:41 am }

P.S. I’ld love to see pictures of your whole house…your style is fantastic!!

46 raychel { 03.11.10 at 5:42 am }

Personally I think the settee would look ultra-chic if you painted the wood a glossy black and used some zebra print pillows to offset the classic frame of the settee, and classic print of your rug.

49 Jill { 03.11.10 at 6:00 am }

Love the read and the whole style of the piece – it looks delicate and sturdy at the same time. But I’m now totally distracted by your bookcase. We just built a bookcase on one wall of our bedroom and were planning to paint it white – now I’m thinking glossy black! (and I think the reader who suggested turquoise for the pillows was onto something, it’s an unusual but really striking combo).

50 Jill { 03.11.10 at 6:00 am }

*ahem* The “red”. Not “read”. S’early. No coffee yet :)

51 Sarah { 03.11.10 at 6:04 am }
52 Carole { 03.11.10 at 6:08 am }

You really scored with this settee! I also like the idea of turquoise in the pillows….

53 thebeautyfile { 03.11.10 at 6:10 am }

I love it!! I love that it picks up the red in the heart on the bookshelf behind it!

54 kristin { 03.11.10 at 6:12 am }

Definitely a turquoise. I thought of it, then noticed a lot of people suggested it as well. Try to match it with the Globe in the background. So a very light shade. I want to see more pics of your apartment! It’s so cute!

55 Hamptontoes { 03.11.10 at 6:22 am }

Fabulous find!

56 Parker { 03.11.10 at 6:27 am }

I was thinking could look amazing with some round metal studs/tacks over the braiding outlining the cushion ( would take a while but look great!) perhaps some black and white striped cushions and textures to contrast with the block red?

i love making pillows out of old clothes i know i’ll never wear again.. that way i have some sort of memory associated with my furniture.
my mom’s closet especially has some shirts with amazing prints that are a little too obnoxious to wear in public but would make perfect house decor. ;)

64 Miranda { 03.11.10 at 7:02 am }

I’m in love with it! it really is perfection in your living room! I love all the red accents in there with the rug and your wall and even some of the book bindings!

I love mixing patterns and fabrics. I’d probably do a fun animal print pillow but in muted colors – white or grey or taupe or something.

92 Amanda { 03.11.10 at 8:55 am }

love the new addition!!! as far as pillows, since its already a stand out piece, it might be great to have a throw layed over the corner of it. or it might look really cool with those long roller pillows – that look like a long cylinder!

93 Shana { 03.11.10 at 8:59 am }

Check out urban’s apartment section- they have some really cute and affordable pillows at the moment. Anthro, of course, does but our pillows from there ran us … about $100.00 a piece. Granted, they are show stoppers … but why buy something that would compete with that lovely piece?! I say- check out urban… etsy…

As far as rec’s on the pillow situation, I’m crushing pretty hard on some of Anthropologies throw pillows. here. Their so understated but still eyecatching and pretty. I really like the Triple Blooms pillow.

Congratulations on this amazing find!

147 Sienna { 03.11.10 at 2:21 pm }

I am in the process of furnishing my house and oh my, our aesthetics are practically identical! I can not even believe it! I’ve got a red wall, too, the exact same prints as you do, some statement pieces and lots of black accents as well. Very beautiful home, Emily!

148 Courtney { 03.11.10 at 2:23 pm }

Can’t go wrong with jonathan adler pillows!

149 Kelly @ Dare to be Domestic { 03.11.10 at 2:27 pm }

Oh wow, I am so jealous. You look gorgeous too!

152 Mrs. Sitcom { 03.11.10 at 2:40 pm }

That is FANTASTIC! I love it. How about a black-and-white zebra-striped pillow, and a tan/black animal print?! Would be kind of a funky/cool contrast with the piece. And maybe a smaller-ish turquoise accent pillow or two? Can’t wait to see what you decide to do!

153 Neile { 03.11.10 at 2:43 pm }

I just got this heavenly floral pillow from world market cost plus, very spring-y and matisse-esque! i know there’s one near the grove’s farmers market. great find by the way :)

154 Meghan { 03.11.10 at 2:46 pm }

What a great find! I love love love it. I like the idea of a turquoise accent pillow; I’ve always had a thing for red + turquoise together.

155 The Lil Bee { 03.11.10 at 3:11 pm }

You are KIDDING me with this settee. OMG. Your apt looks completely amazing. The red wall and black bookcases? Beyond. I need to see more! As for pillows, we’ve gotten ours over the years at DesignPublic.com, as well as a few at Ikea (stripes and stuff like that), and have always had success.

156 nikki { 03.11.10 at 3:12 pm }

I saw this! It looks adorable in your house! I think pillows with black and white would look great on it!

157 Victoria { 03.11.10 at 3:23 pm }

158 Cafe Fashionista { 03.11.10 at 3:51 pm }

160 jel { 03.11.10 at 4:24 pm }

169 Stephanie { 03.11.10 at 6:19 pm }

I LOVE it! It’s so adorable! Although I’m not usually a red kind of girl, I think it’s fantastic in red! Like a pop of red lipstick! I’d throw in some chevron patterned pillows with tealy/turquoise solid pillows. OR go chic-meets-ethnic print… sophisticated suzani. Looks great!

170 Maggie { 03.11.10 at 6:30 pm }

They have great pillows at http://www.madelineweinrib.com/

175 Alli Addison { 03.11.10 at 8:06 pm }

This is a great piece. I would suggest sticking to the traditional aesthetic of this seatee and do one of two things:

1. Keep it monotone and choose various red throw pillows in varying shades, textures and prints, but the prints must be classic. Try a bold stripe with a contrasting trim.

2. Choose a complementary opulent color such as deep cobalt blue to offset the large amount of red you already have in this space.

Or…incorporate both!

For reference, check out this amazing NYC apartment from Elle Décor’s December 2009 issue titled “A Glamorous Renovation” http://tinyurl.com/y9an9vw. Designer Miles Redd did an incredible job!

Enjoy your new find and yes, please do show more posts of your darling home!

176 Jenny { 03.11.10 at 8:30 pm }

Aqua or turquoise!!! Absolutely!!

177 WendyB { 03.11.10 at 8:42 pm }

Cute! I pine for a chaise lounge.

178 Chris { 03.11.10 at 8:55 pm }

Hey I think it is incredible that you have 177 comments that are all positive…Do you edit your comments? Because I find this a bit narcissistic. This is my first time seeing your post though. I am sure it is much deeper than just pictures of you in different clothes and with different hair styles….that dusty bun looks difficult.

179 Ellen { 03.11.10 at 9:03 pm }

LOVE THIS! So so cool. Does it even need pillows? I guess you want to make it look more inviting, but I think it’s chic without anything jazzing it up, too.

http://www.firednfabulous.blogspot.com/

180 Cherie { 03.11.10 at 9:12 pm }

Tres chic! I love it. I would do black and white, but I’m partial. Ballard Designs always has an amazing selection of pillows.

181 bargain bex { 03.11.10 at 10:01 pm }

i’m in complete agreeance with Cherie. i too was thinking black and white (maybe a bold damask pattern or stripes going every which way for the pillows)

182 Marta { 03.11.10 at 10:18 pm }

I hope you negotiated for that puppy!

183 toni { 03.11.10 at 11:11 pm }

you have a beautiful living room!! the settee is perfect! ;)

184 ElodieVeryPetit { 03.12.10 at 12:02 am }

so pretty ! u should definitely get wood colored pillows !

185 Maxine { 03.12.10 at 3:51 am }

How can you not have liked this colour? It looks amazing.

186 Tiffany { 03.12.10 at 9:17 am }

Hey I’m sure you’d agree when I say, check Anthropologie! Everything in that store in amazing and they have some pretty neat things in their housing dept. They set their sales on Tuesdays I believe online first.

OR.. I actually made all the pillows for my couch. I had a similar dilemma, painted wall an accent wall coral and have a gray couch. I just went down to Joanns and bought the matching fabric that I wanted. Sometimes thats easier then spending all the time searching for an already made pillow!
Good luck!

187 Emily { 03.12.10 at 10:52 am }

I’ve been reading your blog forever and this beautiful couch has made me finally comment!! It was just too beautiful not to congratulate you on. I’m with the first commentor, turquoise pillows would look amazing, though I’m not sure such a lovely piece needs anything at all!

188 Trude { 03.12.10 at 11:41 am }

Holy crap that’s cute! Can’t believe it was in that kind of condition, you don’t even have to worry about reupholstering. What a find. :)

189 ZBlock { 03.12.10 at 1:45 pm }

It’s as if it was made especially for you… I love a great find!

190 Anna { 03.12.10 at 2:16 pm }

Oh my goodness. I am dying over your bookshelves.

191 Ashley Lawson { 03.12.10 at 4:16 pm }

Gorgeous, fantastic find!! Wow!

200 Target-Addict { 03.15.10 at 2:35 pm }

You should try some of the Liberty of London for Target throw pillows to accent your new settee:
http://www.target.com/s/180-3030585-0073709?_encoding=UTF8&search-alias=tgt-index&keywords=liberty%20london%20pillow&searchSize=30&ref=sr_bx%5F1%5F1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=1038576&searchPage=1

Most (if not all) are already sold out online, but you can still find them in store. Most stores are keeping them on an endcap near the bedding department, FYI.

201 OlgaTurka { 03.15.10 at 10:06 pm }

Love your great find!!! DEF check out Jonathan Adler for the greatest most quirky pillows…and I’m a huge fan of quirky needlepoint…
