I’m not exactly one who readily embraces change. I like routines, things in an orderly fashion, and find comfort in consistency. But this past week, I decided to cut my hair – by almost half a foot. Prior to that, I had the same haircut for roughly 25 years. It had become so entwined as part of my appearance that I placed too much emphasis on its importance. Needless to say, I was ready for something different. I started researching looks I liked – and zeroed in on Elizabeth Olsen’s blunt cut that’s neither short or long. I’ll admit that when my hairdresser made that first cut, I nearly fell out of the chair, but I’ve since come around to it. It’s the only time I’ve had an actual style (not just long layered hair), but more importantly, it’s reminded me just how crucial it is to embrace change every now and again.

Estée Lauder – Parted Pastel Manicure

February 14th, 2013

I have a major weakness for spring colors, and Estée Lauder’s new pastel collection is pretty close to perfect. When the polishes arrived for the shoot, I couldn’t choose just one, which was the impetus for this simple nail art that combines two colors, side by side. The cotton candy pink and robin’s egg blue are such a fun combination and I love that there are infinite possibilities for this design. I hope you enjoy, and as always, I love seeing your interpretations on Facebook and Twitter!

Five Things

heart nail polish

{I made little hearts using white nail polish + toothpicks}

There were good lessons to be learned this week. We had our fair share of disappointment – with some unfortunate house-hunting news (turns out, if you’re self-employed, it’s very difficult to get a loan) and a major business deal that fell through. I felt like curling up in a ball and not leaving the couch, but instead I focused on being grateful for what I do have. It was a conscious (and somewhat challenging) decision to change my perspective, but I’m so glad that I did. Have a great weekend.

Skull Sweater

I have a lot of playful items in my closet – sparkly shoes and cheeky prints. But I’m typically pretty traditional, even verging on conservative, when it comes to sweaters. I see this one as a gateway piece – from the front it’s classic: a heather gray, cashmere boatneck. But from the back, the neon skull gives it an edge that really sets it apart.
