Sweater Dress

October 10th, 2012

Club Monaco Hat, Velvet Sweater Dress, Maje Belt (similar here), Prada Heels, Vintage Clutch, Helen Ficalora Necklace

You’d think a great sweater dress would be easy to find. Modeled after your favorite knit – one that’s soft, fitted but not tight, and flattering – and just elongated slightly. But somehow they go wrong far too often, resulting in variations that are overly short, skimpy, or uncomfortable. This one, by Velvet, manages to look put together – with either ballet flats, short boots, or heels, while still channeling the comfort of a sweater you’ve had for years.

Red Velvet Swirl Brownies

October 9th, 2012

All bets are off when it comes to sweets during the month of October (there must be some rule that calories don’t count leading up to Halloween, right?). I find all of the temptations – mini candy bars, caramel apples, and baked goods nearly impossible to resist, and these red velvet swirl brownies pretty much top that list. I made a batch last week and have since decided that they’d make an excellent addition to our Halloween party menu, perhaps renamed “bloody brownies.”

Apple Picking

October 8th, 2012

Ray-Ban Aviators, J.Crew Shirt, J Brand Jeans, Sam Edelman Booties

This past Saturday we drove out to Los Rios Rancho for some apple picking and barbecue. The weather cooperated wonderfully – it was slightly cool outside – which was nice, considering Rachel and I were going to wear boots and flannel regardless. We also discovered another spot where they made homemade cider donuts – apparently they’re a big deal on the East Coast, but none of us had ever tried them. Consider us all obsessed.

Five Things

{Mid-week surprise for my husband – a cute card + tickets to see “The Book of Mormon”}

I can’t remember the last time I was this excited for the weekend. Tonight we’re staying in and making homemade pizza (with fresh sausage from here) and tomorrow morning we’re driving two hours east to go apple picking with friends. The beginning of this week was brutally hot (as in, triple digits), but now that it’s cooled down slightly, I’ve clearly started taking advantage of all fall-related activities. Have a great weekend!

{Upcoming project – painting this wonderfully shaped credenza I inherited from a friend}

{Finally got around to trying Eggslut for breakfast – so good}

{Testing out our new kitchen torch on some marshmallows – Rocco was mesmerized}

{A nod to Dia de Muertos on our back steps}
