{The vibrantly-colored trees at the Constitution Gardens}
The last time I visited D.C. was in college, when I stayed with friends at Georgetown University. I immediately fell in love with the city – the history, its beautiful architecture, the quaint streets, and the colors of fall (coincidentally my last trip was also in November). But this time was different. It was quiet and reflective, instead of simply chaotic and hurried. I intentionally left my schedule open, to accommodate for those leisurely afternoons that I’m usually too busy to enjoy. The weather was unseasonably warm (it hovered at around 70° for most of our stay), which meant that we walked everywhere, which was kind of necessary given the amount of food we consumed. Here are just a few of the shots I took while in town.

I’ve never been one of those girls who ever passes on carbs, which has been well documented on this site – through bagels, doughnuts, english muffins, challah, pizza, cinnamon rolls - the list goes on. I realized this past weekend that I had never tried my hand at classic buttermilk biscuits. As with everything new that I make, I read up on the process and learned that a combination of cake flour and all-purpose flour gives you crispy crust and a flaky inside, butter produces better flavor than vegetable shortening, and rolling biscuits into balls (instead of cutting them) keeps them light and airy. I followed this recipe and was floored by the results. They would make a wonderful complement to just about any meal, but I enjoyed them in the afternoon light of the kitchen with just a touch of butter and honey.

Karen Walker Sunglasses, T by Alexander Wang Shirt, Club Monaco Skirt, VPL Boots, Prada Bag, Anthropologie Necklace
Weekend attire should be unfussy, but still pulled together. For a trip downtown to Handsome Coffee Roasters I kept things casual with a leather skirt (the perforations + scalloped edge adds such great texture), a thin shirt, and flat boots.
Also, for those in the greater Washington, D.C. area, South Moon Under will be hosting a book signing tomorrow at their new location in Fairfax, VA. You can check out the details here. Hope to see you there!

{Coffee + chocolate croissant (crumbs) from Proof Bakery}
Needless to say, this was an eventful week for myself and the country. We made it safely into New York, despite being one of only six planes in the air during the worst part of the storm (that’s the kind of unnecessary information you find out when you watch the Weather Channel at 35,000 feet). I’m thrilled to be on the East Coast, especially with my husband, who surprised me and tagged along. I’m looking forward to getting some work done and visiting with old friends before heading to D.C. for my book signing next Tuesday. I couldn’t be more thrilled to visit our country’s capital during this exciting time. Have a great weekend!
