About a week ago, I bought my first denim vest (which is now on sale) since my last one I had in 3rd grade that I paired with a Hypercolor shirt. For such a simple fabric, it adds a nice edge that a light chambray or full jean jacket just don’t offer. I’ve been throwing it over t-shirts and lace dresses, but have also found it’s just as versatile tucked under a blazer on gusty days.

Five Things

cell phone case

{I finally got around to replacing my dingy old iPhone case with one that’s shiny and sleek}

I’ve come to realize that executing a fantastic weekend takes some planning.  In my early 20s, I said yes to everything – and it was exhausting. As I’ve gotten older, I try not to overcommit myself, which has been a welcomed change. This lack of planning often leads to impromptu adventures and long, lazy days, but occasionally leads to pure boredom. I see now that it should be more of a balance – with some concrete plans, periods reserved for doing nothing (specifically naps, camping out in front of the TV, reading in bed, etc.), being with those you love, with breaks reserved for quiet time alone. I have a good feeling about this weekend and I hope you all enjoy the next couple of days!

Oscars Night – Movie Snacks

February 21st, 2013

Triple Feature Snacks - Oscars Party

I love having things to look forward to. It’s so important for my state of mind and helps even the most mundane days if there’s something fun on the horizon. And it doesn’t have to be anything major – remembering we have recorded shows to watch, an approaching dinner party, or an upcoming concert all do the trick. When the holidays wrap up – after all of the gifts have been opened and the new year’s begun, I love knowing that at least movie awards season is nearby. This borders on almost an unhealthy obsession, but all of the glitz and glamour, movie-watching, and nights spent viewing awards shows with friends is such an exciting time of year. In honor of the The Oscars (which are this Sunday!), I put my twist on three quintessential movie-going snacks (soda, popcorn, and candy) to make at home, but with an elevated twist: meringue candy kisses, brown butter sage popcorn, and a fancy Shirley Temple. You can find all of the recipes here.

I’m not exactly one who readily embraces change. I like routines, things in an orderly fashion, and find comfort in consistency. But this past week, I decided to cut my hair – by almost half a foot. Prior to that, I had the same haircut for roughly 25 years. It had become so entwined as part of my appearance that I placed too much emphasis on its importance. Needless to say, I was ready for something different. I started researching looks I liked – and zeroed in on Elizabeth Olsen’s blunt cut that’s neither short or long. I’ll admit that when my hairdresser made that first cut, I nearly fell out of the chair, but I’ve since come around to it. It’s the only time I’ve had an actual style (not just long layered hair), but more importantly, it’s reminded me just how crucial it is to embrace change every now and again.
