{Passports ready for packing}

This week has been insanely busy since I’ve been scrambling to get everything taken care of before we leave on Monday for a much-needed vacation. We’re headed to Costa Rica and I can’t wait to alternate between the pool and beach, eat great food and explore the country. And so that I can fully relax while I’m away, I have all my posts lined up for next week. Now I just have to pack up my suitcase with lots of light layers, bug spray and a little extra room to bring back Costa Rican coffee.

Guest Room

May 24th, 2011

Our guest room has remained practically unfurnished since we moved in. The problem is that it’s essentially two rooms in one – there’s an awkward little add-on that used to hold the bed, which left the rest of the room feeling disproportionately empty.

Yesterday I decided to move things around a bit and brought in the vintage settee and gold pouf from my office and propped the lamps (that had previously been in the living room) up on the glass console under the window. I scoured a local thrift store for old suitcases (for $15 each) and stacked three on top of each other and added a beveled mirror on top. It’s a fun alternative to a nightstand and felt immediately pulled together with just a few guest room essentials (water carafe, fresh flowers and a lamp).

Next steps: new bedding, art, a headboard.

{First strawberries of the season}

This week was filled with intense spring cleaning. After last week’s cosmetic drawer make-over, I’ve continued the trend and have since re-done our bookcases so that they’re more streamlined and organized. As some of you have already noticed, I also did a little bit of cleaning up on the blog as well. Bri Emery, of Design Love Fest, did a fantastic job sprucing things up around here and I couldn’t be happier with with my new sidebars and navigation. Since last weekend was essentially one long party, I’m looking forward to getting things back on track, with one extended outing to the Rose Bowl Flea Market.

When I packed for New York I intentionally left some space in my suitcase to accommodate new purchases.  Maybe it’s the awkward transition from summer to fall, but I left empty handed after numerous trips to my favorite stores that typically prove to be dangerous.  One of my last attempts was a trip to Barneys, where I must have tried on twenty pairs of jeans, until I found some that are as comfortable (they’re as soft as some of my pajamas!) as they are flattering.  I’m sure I’ll pull out my skinny jeans once it’s boot weather (so I can tuck them into these and these), but for now I’m completely smitten with the wide leg variety.
