Old Fashioned Onion Rings

May 20th, 2010

The name “onion ring” is truly deceptive.  It makes you feel like you’re simply eating a little sliver of onion and not much else.  Definitely not the case.  Last night for the Lakers game, I surprised my boyfriend with a batch of old fashioned onion rings (recipe here).  I had never fried anything before and promptly changed into an outfit that more closely resembled a bee keeper since I imagined hot oil splashing all over my arms (again, not the case).  They made for a fun and indulgent appetizer and had I been able to stop myself from eating so many, I’d make them again for the next game.

  1. delicious!

  2. Mmmmm those look so good! I’m now starving

  3. You are so brave! I am afraid of frying, so I always just stick stuff in the oven and hope it tastes relatively similar.

  4. So, funny story. I saw this onion ring post and immediately printed the recipe – I was ready to give it a whirl for my husband.

Well, I wish I could post photos with my comment – last night ended in a call to 911 and a major grease fire in our kitchen. I have a photo of all the onion ring ingredients on my counter but blackened melted cabinets and a black ceiling all around. It was quite the night all in the name of some homemade onion rings.

We’re all safe (my husband, me and two dogs) and we learned a valuable lesson when working with oil/grease in the kitchen – if it gets too hot it WILL ignite and when it does – grab flour, baking soda or a wet rag to smoother the fire. Whatever you do… DO NOT POUR WATER ON IT.

So.. that’s my onion ring comment and as for posting a recipe for the Kitchen Aid mixer… how about this British PSA (recommended by the Fire Department) as a Recipe to AVOID Disaster. Its one I hope nobody ever has to use but its sure one that i WISH i had seen before last night. Does that count for the contest?
