Old Fashioned Onion Rings

The name “onion ring” is truly deceptive. It makes you feel like you’re simply eating a little sliver of onion and not much else. Definitely not the case. Last night for the Lakers game, I surprised my boyfriend with a batch of old fashioned onion rings (recipe here). I had never fried anything before and promptly changed into an outfit that more closely resembled a bee keeper since I imagined hot oil splashing all over my arms (again, not the case). They made for a fun and indulgent appetizer and had I been able to stop myself from eating so many, I’d make them again for the next game.

It’s cheap to make, delicious and highly addictive snacks. Not a sports fan myself, I’ll watch the game just so I can have the excuse to eat them.
Those look to die for! It’s a good thing I don’t have adequate cooking facilities here in Beijing at the moment, or guess what I’d be making tonight?

Onionrings are so goood! Love your blog!
yummy
The thought of frying something on my own is rather daunting…I’ve always assumed it would turn my kitchen into a greasy mess while making my apartment smell for days. But you have made it sound so easy and the final outcome looks simply delectable! May have to give frying another thought
Lovely B.
I’ve never fried anything before either. I always assumed it would be really messy. Those onion rings look very good though =)

I don’t particularly care for fried or for onions, but I love onion rings. I too may have to give frying another thought – because onion rings out seem to be either those big wheel rings, or the whimpy little strings. These look perfect.
looks yum. you can totally bake them too. i’ve been searching for a good vegan recipe… still haven’t found one:(

Emily,
This is such a great idea! I am definitely going to have to try this. I now get off work on Fridays at 1:00pm, so I will have time to try out new recipes.
Oh my! These look tempting. I was just realizing last night that my usual healthy diet and work out must be getting a little too boring b/c the last two weeks I have been eating the most yummy treats! Last night I skipped the gym and ate gelato instead. Not the model of health, but a girl has to live on the wild side sometimes, right! xo
Yum! I will have to try these myself for my next girl’s night in.
btw- your photos are always incredible! Love your blog.

Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
looks so yummy! you should try frying in gee! (clarified butter) its used in for frying most indian treats and makes SUCH a difference and is soooo good for you, my mom has been doing it since I was little and even though we are from argentina not india so i’m not sure how she came across it? Everyone always comments on how great her empanadas and samosas taste and it’s all because of the gee!

Looks so yummy! I have a recipe for onion rings I can’t wait to try. You’re making me think I should soon.
Yummyyyy
This is definitely something I’d never even thought of when it comes to trying recipes. I’m so excited you posted, they look delicious and I can’t wait to try it out. Thanks!
i’m seeing this post right before my lunch break at work
I’m craving onion rings now and there’s nowhere to get them nearby ;(
For some reason, the texture of those onion rings remind me of my recipe for coconut shrimp. Is it bad that I’m craving onion rings and coconut shrimp at the same time? =)
YUMMMMY!!! I need to make these!
Those look DANGEROUS! Like if too many were in front of me I would probably eat them ALL!! Great recipe though and great idea…I am hoping for a Celtics-Lakers Championship series and then I will host a party and make lots of treats!
http://glamlatte.blogspot.com
Yum! Those look and sound so good.
Those look dee-lish! As soon as my school gets out for the summer, I am definitely going to attempt those!
Yummy! You inspire me all the time to try something new, whether its food or fashion. Thank you, Emily
Those look delicious!! I can’t wait to try out the recipe!
You have never fried anything before? It seems that all I do is fry. Haha
delicious!
Mmmmm those look so good! I’m now starving
You are so brave! I am afraid of frying, so I always just stick stuff in the oven and hope it tastes relatively similar.
So, funny story. I saw this onion ring post and immediately printed the recipe – I was ready to give it a whirl for my husband.
Well, I wish I could post photos with my comment – last night ended in a call to 911 and a major grease fire in our kitchen. I have a photo of all the onion ring ingredients on my counter but blackened melted cabinets and a black ceiling all around. It was quite the night all in the name of some homemade onion rings.
We’re all safe (my husband, me and two dogs) and we learned a valuable lesson when working with oil/grease in the kitchen – if it gets too hot it WILL ignite and when it does – grab flour, baking soda or a wet rag to smoother the fire. Whatever you do… DO NOT POUR WATER ON IT.
So.. that’s my onion ring comment and as for posting a recipe for the Kitchen Aid mixer… how about this British PSA (recommended by the Fire Department) as a Recipe to AVOID Disaster. Its one I hope nobody ever has to use but its sure one that i WISH i had seen before last night. Does that count for the contest?
