Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

The “Joy of Cooking” cookbook has been a staple in my parents’ kitchen for as long as I can remember.  It holds many of my favorite recipes, including one of the best oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever tasted (recipe here.  Just substitute 1 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips for the raisins) .  They have a slight crunch when you first bite into them with a gooey center that’s bursting with chocolate and oatmeal flakes.  I made a batch last weekend from my own “Joy of Cooking” that my dad gave me for Christmas a few years back.  Almost as special as the recipe itself is the inscription my dad wrote inside the front cover that I read every time I open the book (pictured below).

Aw, your dad has such nice handwriting- and what a lovely note! I shudder to think what a note from my dad would look like, but chances are everything would be misspelled and he’d sign off by calling me a jerkface.

(My dad is the first person to sneak up and nail me in the back of the head with a snowball every winter. Clearly, I don’t set my standards for our relationship very high.)

Those cookies need to get in my belly. NOW.

What your dad wrote is so sweet and caring. Whenever I see a post about your family it seems like you all genuinely care about each other and I really like that :)

Love your dad’s message. Must get that book for myself.

Those cookies look so yummy! I want, I want, I want! It makes me really hungry just looking at those pictures. Must get those rusty cooking/baking skills out and try to get into practice again…

And that note from your dad is so sweet! He must be very honest about his feelings and emotions. My dad is the type who shows affection by getting into all the things that are “cool” – house music, laptops, poker, Messenger. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, nonetheless… Your dad’s so cute!

I love love love your blog, by the way. It’s a fun read :)

Personally, I liked the Fanny Farmer cookbook on my mom’s shelf, and would often point and laugh at the name on the spine and imagine a farmer walking through a field where bare butts were poking up through the rows of dirt….

The note from your dad was as sweet as those cookies :)
His advice to your find your passion is a great one indeed!

How adorable is your dad? He seems like an amazing man. I was hoping for the recipe because this made me crave some oatmeal choco chip cookies and my dad has not yet gifted me with the cookbook (I have a feeling that will never happen, but that’s okay!) I bet I can find it online though.

What a great sentiment! My Swedish grandmother used to make the most incredible cookies for Christmas every year but sadly, she passed away before any of us could get the recipes. My cousins and I have spent the past few years trying to recreate her cookies and our childhood all the while having a blast honoring her memory. There’s just something about food that brings people together, don’t you think?
