Movin’ Out

After two years of toiling away in my small studio unit, I’ve finally decided to move to a larger place, which happens to be my boyfriend’s apartment. While it’s both exciting and a bit scary, one of the things I’m most looking forward to is some slight re-decorating. He actually has very nice taste (for a guy), but the current iteration of our apartment lacks some of the refined details only a caring girlfriend can provide.  I’ve since taken a liking to slightly off-beat pieces so here are a few of my must-haves.

West Elm’s Antler Table Lamp has such a wonderfully quirky take on home interior by bringing in an outside element from nature. Since I’m not exactly an outdoorsy kind of girl, I’m drawn to its sleek design made of white resin that will add a glamorous touch to an end table.

Domino Magazine has been like my design bible, providing me with exceptional ideas that have been surprisingly applicable. This faux fireplace, for example, is such a great way to enliven a space that has minimal architecture, and the mirror that’s placed inside adds a contemporary spin, while simultaneously making the room look bigger.

While my boyfriend is wildly opposed to the notion of having a (fake) zebra rug, I’m oddly drawn to the idea. Since we’re planning on painting the main wall of the living area a deep red, I think it would be a perfect way to accentuate the color.

What’s your take: to stripe or not to stripe?

I say Yay to Stripes!

And congrats/good luck for the moving in, it’s exciting! I also just took that step with my boyfriend (when we moved to Seoul)… it’s definitely an adjustment, but it’s so much fun!
My best to you both :)

ooo, i wouldn’t stripe. but that’s what makes it interesting; everyone has their own taste — and i LOVE that!

Congrats on moving in…and the bigger place ;) !

Hmmmm…I’ll admit that I’m deeply conflicted on the stripe. It’s a bold move, but I think you guys could pull it off if you really wanted to.
Can’t wait to see how it all turns out!

good luck! I hope it works out for you.
The idea of covering a fire place with a mirror panel is interesting.

BTW.. your subscribe button is broken.. I had to delete duplicated ‘http//’ in the URL. :)

Ooohh I love to decorate my house. It’s so fun and fulfilling. I recently sent retro with a 50 style sofa, Noguchi table and Le Corbusier relaxing lounge.

I love the idea of redecorating. Lauren and I are always changing around our apartment. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I would say since you and your boyfriends are now living together try and find a balance to please both sides so its a home for two : D

congrats on the big step forward!! and i do love that antler lamp! i feel like i stil need so much for my house.. at least our bedroom is done.. and unfortunately that zebra rug wouldn’t match our style.. but i do like it!

Is IKEA out of the question?

12 enc { 07.23.08 at 9:42 pm }

Can you get him to bend on the zebra rug? That thing is wild!

Love the decorations and your site! My sister just introduced me. I support the co-habitation decision – I just moved in with my boyfriend two months ago and we are having a great time. Nothing about our relationship has at all changed. He would NEVER in a million years go for that zebra rug (although I would probably beg for days on end) but GOOD LUCK with it! I thikn you will need it …
Thanks for being so awesome!

I love the table lamp and I say yay to the zebra stripes-go for it!!

Ah what fun! And how lovely too.
On the stripe front – I’m drawn too but I’ll always have Madonna’s LA house interior in my mind which her brother did – it was ghastly and too many zebra stripes. I’d defer on this one to boy and have your way on something more important!

Good luck with the move. I would go for the stripe!

I love the stripe. I have a room that’s a deep reddish-pink and wouldn’t hesitate to use that rug (except that my dog might get confused . . .).

Stripe! Red walls sound so good, I have been dreaming of having boldly painted walls for such a long time.

Enjoy both re-decorating and living with the bf. You are such a lovely couple!

Hey Cupcake! Thanks for the kind words on my post.

Surprisingly enough, I recently launched an apartment blog…on the stuff I like home-wise, plus photos of my set up. Its been kinda fun to keep it changing and to constantly challenge the space to re-inspire me.

Our tastes are kinda similar…Love Domino too (who couldn’t?)…check out my blog and let me know what you think…

PS…I’d stripe. There’s nothing better than an accent piece that makes visitors go “whoa! whats the deal in here?”

Congrats! This is very exciting news!
As for the zebra, guys feel emasculated by animal prints for some reason – unless it is MAJORly important to you to have the zebra rug, I’d let it go . . . You two can definitely find a sumptuous brown or other patterned rug to compliment the red wall. Have fun!!

I found this very special ottoman on sale at Brocadehome.com that would be just fab in your new space. http://www.brocadehome.com/bh/catalog/product/product_detail.jsp?productId=bh_prod103315&link=leftnav&navAction=jump&navCount=1&categoryId=bh_cat113006

Great post, as usual.

I remember moving into my boyfriend’s (now husband) place and the fun I had, uh — how do I put this nicely — removing all traces of his beer can and pizza box home decor theme.

I love all of your picks, and yes, a zebra rug would look absolutely fabulous against a red wall — tres chic!

To Stripe! ♥

Great post considering we are moving in a few months and I am excited to redecorate the entire place!!

Thanks for commenting!! ^_^ even so, if I see another top like it, I will snag it just in case ;)

Congrats on your move!
I love the antler lamp however I’m a little apprehensive about the stripe rug with red walls but that’s just because it’s not really my style
will u put pics up when your done redecorating?

First off, congratulations! I would like to follow in your footsteps one day. I, too, am in a tiny studio, and am in pursuit of a bigger place. I would love to live in my boyfriend’s house, but he’s very allergic to my cat. I can’t get rid of her…I love her too much.

Anyway, let us know how the move goes! Also, I’m a domino fan from way back. I always love to go to thrift stores to look for interesting pieces I can use in creative ways, and make over. Maybe you two can find something cool you could work on together!

My husband & I are moving out of our tiny studio apartment into a bigger place as well. But it wasn’t by choice. Our apartment home is getting foreclosed. Either way, we both think it’s for the better, as we’ve been here for over a year & probably wouldn’t have made the move to get something bigger right away.

I’m excited, but I am going to miss my little studio. ;[

34 Terren { 07.24.08 at 9:34 pm }

i see the zebra! haha

have fun moving in! is that a picture of you and your boy? if it is, you two look so good together. :]

35 Katlin { 07.25.08 at 4:28 am }

How fun! I’m also moving in with a friend and I was excited to decorate my room but just thinking about packing all my stuff and lugging it over there drains me! I’m not an animal print person, so I wouldn’t go for it, but that’s just my opinon! :)

36 WendyB { 07.25.08 at 9:33 am }

I just got a faux zebra rug myself so I’m all for it!
