Matzo Ball Soup

January 29th, 2013

soup final 1

When you’re not feeling your best, there are few foods more soothing than chicken soup (though Cool Ranch Doritos are a close second for me). In light of this year’s flu season, my husband decided to make homemade broth with matzoh balls. It’s a simple recipe that includes some non-traditional spices, to provide a slight kick. It takes a bit longer than heating a can of soup in the microwave, but this is the next best thing to having your favorite Jewish deli deliver.

Your husband made this?! Can I introduce my husband to yours!?! Although mine did good when I was sick too. He made a trip to my Mom’s house everyday and got me her homemade chicken soup :) I hope you are feeling better!

Secrets to good matzoh balls: be sure to season with salt (otherwise they have no taste!) and no peaking when they are cooking!

I grew up in a tiny little white Catholic town and didn’t even know a Jewish person until college. For YEARS I assumed the balls in this soup were cheese! D’oh! Friends have enlightened me since then though :)

I don’t think I’ve ever tried real matzoh soup before! I love hot soups when I’m sick, so I’ll definitely try this one out next time I feel under the weather. Well.. maybe before I get sick, since it’s better to prevent than cure!

I love matzo ball soup! This looks pretty good, but I bet it would have been much better if you hadn’t strained out the chicken and veggies.

When does the Seltzer make it’s appearance in the recipe? It’s on the list of ingredients but not in the step-by-step instructions.

See, the actual matzo balls are my least favorite part – it’s ALL about the broth to me. Mmmmmmmmmmm……..
