Martha My Dear

September 18th, 2008

If I were only a few inches shorter, I would still don a mask on Halloween and attempt to trick-or-treat with the other children in my neighborhood. Since that’s not exactly a possibility (and the idea’s a bit creepy), I’ve found other ways to celebrate my favorite holiday.

Last year, my friend Rachel, of Heart-of-Light, and I drove about an hour away to visit a pumpkin patch. Of course, we were the oldest ones there without children, but that didn’t stop us from jumping in wheel barrows and laughing our way through the make-shift haunted house. This year, we’ve upgraded just a bit and will be attempting our own Halloween decorations. Since I now live with my boyfriend, I’ve promised to keep them tasteful and simple with a little inspiration from Martha Stewart.

Paper mice – If these were spiders, I couldn’t deal, but these mice are such a fun option to decorate our entryway.

Silhouette Curtains – Not sure if the hanging body would bode well in Beverly Hills, but this would be so perfect for our two big windows facing the street.

Glittered pumpkins – Such a festive way to add a bit of sparkle to a table or mantle.

Do you have any annual Halloween traditions?

Those are such adorable options … but I’ll admit that our Halloween tradition is hiding from trick-or-treaters in the basement, watching a video. We live in a bad ‘hood, and get a lot of 40-year-old men banging on our door with trashbags saying, “My kid’s too young to trick-or-treat.” Bleh.

Well here we don’t have any tradition by Halloween, but slowly it starts being celabreated in clubs.

I am so pysched for Halloween – it is so fun to see all the amazing costumes that people come up with. Every year, we keep track of how many trick-or-treaters come to our house; in the 1980s it used to be in the hundreds, then it tapered, and now it’s back up around 70+ kids per year . . .

With respect to wearing a blazer when one is well-endowed: I think you should wear everything and anything – you have a great figure so fitted blazers will look fantastic – just be aware that you are going to have to tailor everything to nip it in at the waist! Let me know how it goes, Emily!

Oh, is it pumpkin time already? :) I actually hated Halloween as a kid, and I still don’t have much of a tradition for it.

My hubbo has a 12-year-old daughter who likes decorations, and when they moved in with me, they brought a glittery pumpkin and some other fun stuff, but it’s very “kid.” I bought an iridescent glass pumpkin last year, and I think I’ll start a collection, using that one as inspiration. I really like fall colors and decorations that reflect the season.

I love all those ideas! Halloween isn’t as big in NZ as it is in the US, but I might have to try some of these out :)

No Halloween traditions for me, but I’m loving those decorations! I adore Halloween, I love to dress up.

Very cute ideas indeed – although, living in a tiny old apt in NYC with actual mice I think I’ll pass on that one :)

We don’t celebrate Halloween here (only the people that want another excuse to party) but I always find this holiday very amusing. The paper mice are so cute and I love the glittered pumpkins!

Also, I’m currently running a contest on my blog to win a $25 gift certificate from a lovely online boutique. Hope you’ll check it out! Enjoy your day tomorrow :)

  • http://www.prettysandyfeet.com katelin

oooh what great fall decorations, i can’t wait to get my own.

  • http://theclothes.blogspot.com The Clothes Horse

Oh! I adore the paper mice idea–it’s lovely. I don’t have any regular Halloween traditions (sadly enough) but I like visiting corn mazes when I get the chance–it’s a lot of young people, but you can get away with a maze at any age…

I have decorated with the Martha Mouse idea for the last few years, and it has been a hit! I also hung black crows from our chandelier and kitchen cabinets (i should have taken pictures!). my friend did the window cutouts, and they were so fabulous. Everyone on the street loved them. Martha’s amazing – don’t you think?

    love love love halloween!

My husband & I have a Pumpkin Carving Party every year & invite all our friends… carving is so fun to do, but most of us wouldn’t bother to do it on our own (seeing as we have no kids!)- but as a group event it is always tons of fun! Plus everyone likes taking home toasted pumpkin seeds at the end of the night… yum!

I love Halloween. I love fall. My favorite Halloween tradition is gorging myself on the marshmallow candy pumpkins until I feel too sick to move.

I want some glittery pumpkins! And like everyone else I thought the paper mice were adorable. It’s always such a pleasure to visit your site.

That’s very much north American though isn’t it? We don’t have that tradition. One less fun thing to have. Tragic.

Your look gorgeous in that seasonal photo. enjoy your lovely autumn weather, Emily.

I love Halloween. Really, you are never too old to celebrate! Bravo to you and your friend for heading off to the pumpking patch last year. Martha always has the best holiday ideas. I love the silhouettes – I did something similar last year with a picket fence, cats, full moon, stars, and bats. It turned out really great and I’ll be putting it up again this year
