Cupcakes and Cashmere

Living (Room for Improvement)

October 27th, 2011

On a rainy day a few weeks back,  I decided to change around the entire layout of our living room. The room itself is rather awkward – it’s long and narrow, and our old setup only made it feel more cramped. I rotated the seating area, moved the TV from over the mantle to the console table, and traded in our wooden coffee table for a sleek, marble version. The room is far more inviting (and conducive to both cocktail parties and TV marathons) and while there’s still much to be done (I’m contemplating what to have on the mantle and how to fill up the massive empty wall), it’s since become my favorite room.

Details:

Coffee table (currently 20% off): Blu Dot
Tray: West Elm
Couch + matching chair: Z Gallerie
Rug: West Elm
Chair, Toucan, Prints: Vintage
Console: Crate and Barrel
Side table: West Elm
Pillows: Room Service
Lamps: Gilt Groupe

I really like how the layout looks clean, fresh and almost as if every item in the room is completely brand new. That’s the power in switching up things in your life every now and then!

I really like the bookcases on either side of the window and the ceiling beams! You’re right about the proportions of that room – I would NOT know what to do with it! Looks great!

I have the same awkward shaped room with floor to ceiling windows on one wall. Love what you did with the space! P.S. I’ve had the “Benny” sofa on my list of faves for some time. ..never thought of adding the club chair and it looks fabulous!

I really like this room, it’s so inviting. I believe it’s your home in which there’s a room that has a long narrow wooden table bordering the wall? That is actually my favorite room, such a practical yet aesthetically pleasing idea.

I have almost the exact same set up in my living room (even the built in book cases behind, kinda creepy how alike they are) Long, narrow, fire place in the wrong spot. Great job using creativity!!

I have a passion for decorating and I love how you mix modern, antique and sass! Have you thought about long curtains? I was thinking colored block curtains. For example the bottom 1/4 be a different color. That way you are not taking away from the fun printed rug. Make sense?

All in all, great job! Way to tackle the awkward shaped room!

WHY CAN’T WE SEE LARGER PHOTOS!!?!?!?

the pictures you post are SOOO SOOOO TINY. We can’t see any of the details in the photos.

You used to have it so that when we clicked on a photo we could see it larger, now it goes to a defunct google account.

PLEASE post larger photos, especially of design ideas.

    Thanks EMILY!!

I was unaware your home was essentially a re-purposed mill home. How quaint.

I really, really like the artwork leaning on the mantle with the toucan. And you managed to place the TV in a spot that doesn’t detract from the overall design of the room, but is still central. Nicely done. And Happy Halloween! What’s your costume gonna be? A chicken or a dino, right?! ;) xo

I would suggest a lamp or a simple chandelier. It will complete the interior. I love those rustic beams.

I love your vintage arm chair! I have been looking for the perfect cozy chair for a while now and it’s really difficult to find a good one that doesn’t break the bank.
