Kubrick Exhibit at LACMA

November 7th, 2012

{Alex’s costume from A Clockwork Orange}

Back when I was in college and still pretty unfocused on what I wanted to study/do/become, I took as many courses as I could to broaden my perspective. One such random class was all about Stanley Kubrick. I’ll admit that I initially signed up for the movie screenings and popcorn (no joke), but soon found out that it wasn’t as simple as that. His films were incredibly complex and at times controversial – something that was hard to grasp as a young media studies minor. But I’ve admired his work ever since, so when I found out about the exhibit dedicated to him and his work at LACMA, I jumped at the chance to see it. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend it, but for those of you who are unable to go, here are some of the things I loved most.

{The incredible array of camera technology on display}

{Movie posters that offer a glimpse of his eclectic work}

{A photograph he took as a sixteen-year-old that earned him a position at Look Magazine}

{A scale model of the war room from Dr. Strangelove}

{The infamous typewriter from The Shining}

{The original costumes for the Grady sisters – so creepy in person}

{I loved seeing all of his notes and excerpts he chose to incorporate into his films}

    I think this Kubrik film would have been the best one, but unfortunately it was never made. I’m sure the notes fascinating though…
