Kubrick Exhibit at LACMA

November 7th, 2012

{Alex’s costume from A Clockwork Orange}

Back when I was in college and still pretty unfocused on what I wanted to study/do/become, I took as many courses as I could to broaden my perspective. One such random class was all about Stanley Kubrick. I’ll admit that I initially signed up for the movie screenings and popcorn (no joke), but soon found out that it wasn’t as simple as that. His films were incredibly complex and at times controversial – something that was hard to grasp as a young media studies minor. But I’ve admired his work ever since, so when I found out about the exhibit dedicated to him and his work at LACMA, I jumped at the chance to see it. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend it, but for those of you who are unable to go, here are some of the things I loved most.

{The incredible array of camera technology on display}

{Movie posters that offer a glimpse of his eclectic work}

{A photograph he took as a sixteen-year-old that earned him a position at Look Magazine}

{A scale model of the war room from Dr. Strangelove}

{The infamous typewriter from The Shining}

{The original costumes for the Grady sisters – so creepy in person}

{I loved seeing all of his notes and excerpts he chose to incorporate into his films}

    So interesting! I minored in cinema studies and spent a lot of time studying A Clockwork Orange and his use of upbeat, positive music during killing scenes. Very genius!

    I took TONS of liberal arts classes while I was deciding what I wanted, too! I actually took history of rock and roll & mafia movies…I like to think my parents’ money was well spent, as I am INCREDIBLY well rounded. Hahaha. I LOVED Dr. Strangelove (or How I learned to love the atomic bomb) from my Political Theory class- it was done so well. Great, great post, Emily!! Wish I could visit the exhibit!

    Kubrick is not one of my favourites. I’ve seen some of his films and… no! Don’t like.
    I get bored usually and fall asleep somewhere in the middle ;)
    I love Hitchcock :D

    I am so in love with Kubrick’s work. Thanks for sharing, and welcome to the Big Apple!

  • Elise

    How were you able to take pictures? And quality pic at that. Typically that’s a BIG no-no for temporary exhibitions.

  • Shana

    I’m familiar with his film Barry Lyndon. Must see it again because I was so involved in how it looked–which was fabulous, that I honestly don’t remember what it was about.

    I’ve never seen The Shining, Lolita…I see a Kubrick fest coming at my place soon.

    Thanks for the reminder.

    My grandpa worked on the Shining !

    I absolutely adore Dr. Strangelove – it’s insane and hilarious. Definitely a must watch of his. And as much as I LOVED the Space Odyssey books (Arther C. Clarke was a genius), I’m afraid I can’t say the same for Kubrick’s movie version (despite him more or less writing it with A.C.C.). Great selection of pictures here – wish I could have gone!

    The two movies I saw from him, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining, both freaked me out. Get the shivers from only seeing that typewriter, brrr.

    Thank you so much for posting this! I was so excited I flew down from San Jose and stayed overnight at a nearby Bed & Breakfast just to see it. The B&B is Cinema Suites on Fairfax, only about 5 blocks away, a real charmer at a great price. This was easily the best exhibit I’ve ever seen. I even went back the next morning before I left for the airport just try and absorb and appreciate more and I’m SO glad I did because the guard let me touch Jack’s typewriter! I nearly passed out from geek overload and my boyfriend was incredibly envious when I showed him the pictures. That definitely earned a spot in the top 5 of coolest moments of my life!

    I look forward to your posts every day and I have your book too, which is wonderful. Keep us the good work inspiring us all :) Happy Holidays!
