Irish Soda Bread

January 5th, 2011

I have an unhealthy obsession with bread, but never have the patience to make it myself.  All of the kneading, waiting and rising frustrates me, which is why this Irish Soda Bread recipe is perfect on so many levels (it was simple to make and was out of the oven in less than an hour).   The hint of orange with the dried currants was refreshing and I was pleasantly surprised by the moist texture and hearty crust.  I’ve already added this to my must-make list for when we host brunch and can’t wait to experiment with different flavor combinations.

Just discovered your blog, I love it already! I adore Irish bread, my dad makes it constantly but we use raisins. It’s so easy to make!

This looks so yummy! I love Irish soda bread. I worked as a pastry chef for several months and this was one of my favorite bread recipes to work with. So easy and such an amazing result!

Is this [very delicious-looking] recipe for the stuff you actually get in Ireland or is it a hybrid version? I made the real stuff in Ireland and I can’t find a recipe for it :( I shall have to try this regardless.

This looks yummy but it is more of a modern twist on traditional soda bread. Traditional soda bread/farls is plain, it has no dried fruits. The best way to enjoy it is the most simple, toasted with some fresh butter and a cup of tea. It is also great served with smoked bacon :)
