I Left My Heart In San Francisco

sf4.jpg

It’s been one week since we returned from our trip to San Francisco and I still haven’t quite adjusted to life in L.A.  It’s hard to complain when it’s 75° and sunny, but there’s something to be said about the charm of a smaller city. I loved ducking into quaint boutiques and cozy bakeries that lined the streets of San Francisco and the cohesiveness of all the separate neighborhoods.  Here are a few of the photographs that I keep pulling up as a reminder of our lovely time spent up north.

sf1.jpg

A bakery that had warm baguettes and an impressive selection of fresh pastries.

sf2.jpg

Sweet, colored lanterns that hung from the trees.

sf3.jpg

A candy store in Hayes Valley that served cupcakes that were almost too pretty to eat.

sf5.jpg

You certainly can’t beat the fresh ingredients at China Town.

The city is pretty wonderful! I, too, am a bay area girl. I’ve lived here my whole life and I love being able to take a little trip into the city for some good food and inspiration.

PS: I recently discovered your blog and it is a constant source of inspiration for me! I have tons of clothes and love looking at your outfits to help me decide how to pair certain items!

San Francisco is one of my favourite cities in America…it just has such a lovely atmosphere. It’s different from any other city in the world. But I must admit .. I’m a little jealous of your 75 degree heat!

26 The Lil Bee { 01.07.10 at 7:42 am }

Em! I love those lanterns! I think you could put together a little homage to San Fran with some lanterns in your apartment…nothing crazy, just a few in the corner by your desk or something.

27 Runway Hippie { 01.07.10 at 7:49 am }

is that photo of the croissants from the boulangerie off of fillmore street!?

isn’t there something about san francisco! i’m in LA right now and even though i’m in a city it just doesn’t give me that feeling that SF does.
but LA is still fun :)

39 Jamie B { 01.07.10 at 9:02 am }

Ah, I love SF and the whole surrounding area too! I’m lucky enough to have my sister and brother-in-law living in Berkeley so I have reason to visit.

Have you discovered Sol Food in San Rafel yet? They make Puerto Rican food to die for–it can’t be missed! The atmosphere is airy, tropical, and relaxed and the food is one of my all-time favorites. http://www.solfoodrestaurant.com/. Thanks for sharing your photos!

40 Erin { 01.07.10 at 9:07 am }

you photos make me want to take a little road trip : )

haven’t been to SF in years… would love to go.

41 Jessica { 01.07.10 at 9:08 am }

75º and sunny….you’re lucky. In IL, we have 6+ inches of snow and 0º

42 Heather Clark { 01.07.10 at 9:09 am }

I have to say…I grew up in LA and now live in San Francisco and although I do love and appreciate both…you can’t beat walking out the door and have everything at your fingertips as you do in a real city. And how 5-10 minutes in either direction brings you to a different neighborhood that is a whole new world and has completely its own vibe. Not to mention no driving! I still love LA though and like to visit.

48 Jill { 01.07.10 at 9:56 am }

It’s been five months since the last time I was in San Francisco, and I still dream about it almost on a daily basis….

49 Patricia { 01.07.10 at 9:56 am }

Hmm…those croissants and that handwriting looks familiar! La Boulange on Pine??? Their almond croissants are among the best I’ve ever had, but I snatched up some caneles and sandy, hazelnut shortbread over the holidays.

As a Bay Area girl in LA, I always long for crisp, ocean air and hilly streets of San Francisco. Your photos are already making me excited for my trip back up in two weeks!!

50 Melissa { 01.07.10 at 10:06 am }

Those treats look yummy! And can you send some of that sunny weather to Chicago? It’s snowing and cold!! xoxo

51 Christina { 01.07.10 at 10:08 am }

Even though I had to go to San Francisco for work, it was a week in pure heaven. I can’t wait to go back.

Your pictures look great!

54 nicolemw { 01.07.10 at 10:19 am }

I’m a San Fran native and love how you caught the essence of the city in those snapshots. Now off to find those cupcakes…

55 Josie Maran { 01.07.10 at 10:45 am }

I grew up in the Bay Area, too and try to get back whenever I can. I do love me some LA, though! And we’re so close… :)

I live in SF where is this bakery?La Boulange? I may have to head over there on my lunch hour and snag one…great way to capture the beauty of this city. I must admit that although I live in SF I am so a SoCal girl missing that warm weather!! Oh and whenever you come back please hit up my favorite restaurant in the city…Burma Superstar!!

61 samantha hutchinson { 01.07.10 at 11:36 am }

I heart Union street! I was up there one year on Valentine’s day and they had red balloons tied to every parking meter for about three blocks – too cute.

62 Wanderlusting { 01.07.10 at 11:52 am }

San Fran is the best place ever, in the whole USA.

I can guarantee once (if, once, whatever ;) my books get published, that’s the first place I am moving to – if I had to leave Vancouver, which on days like today, I think about!

Going there in April too see my favourite band. Very excited :)

Great pics, I’ve missed reading you.

Hi Emily,

I am from Brazil and I spent 40 days in San Francisco last year…I love my country but San Francisco made me change my idea about living here for the rest of my life…I could spend all the days of my life there…it’s more than amazing, cozy and charming.
Cheers,

I could definitely go for one of those croissants right about now…

My husband and I lived in the Bay Area for about 5 months…we had to return to the midwest because he got a promotion (which is amazing, and I’m grateful!). We’ve been back in Indiana since August, and we’re closer to family now, but I have to admit that I’ve literally SHED TEARS over how much I miss SF…it’s my favorite city in the world! Can’t wait to get back for a vacation…a large chunk of my heart is definitely still there…and always will be! :)
