How To: Winged Eyeliner
The first time I applied liquid eyeliner, it looked like I had been in some sort of brawl. My cheeks were smeared black, my eyes were flooded with inky fluid and my eyelashes were fused together in one giant clump. It was not pretty. With just a bit of practice though, I now can get a romantic, winged eye in a few simple steps:

Products:
Eyelash Curler: Shiseido
Mascara: Maybelline
Eyeliner: Loreal
Lipstick: M.A.C. (Snob)

Great tutorial, even after several years of applying it i still have difficulty doing it. In future i think i wil try your dot to dot method. robbie xox http://www.theothersideofthepondmydear.blogspot.com
I’ve been doing winged eyeliner almost daily for the past few months. It’s so simple yet can look dramatic. Love it!
gorgeous! This never seems to work well on me but I think it is the shape of my eye/eyelid. I need to my makeup done one time to see if they can do it. I do love the dotting trick! and wow you are just stunning!
oh and what is your nailpolish? I love it!
very pretty!
I have to admit after years of practice this is still hard for me! If I do wear liquid eyeliner, I usually won ‘t wing it since it just looks unnatural on me unless I put on a lot (ugh asian eyes).
I only use eyeliner – no eyeshadow… But never that winged. Need to try it out! Good tip about the dots!
Milana from http://fashionstyleadvice.com
I find this extremely difficult to do! Maybe I’ll try it again with your tips

thanks! the dots between the eyelashes is the perfect advice!

hello, i like your blog
xoxo Eli
It’s cute. But it’s strange that you put first the mascara. About me, i apply the eyeliner first and then the mascara
you look stunning!

Great tutorial – thank you!
But I’m not giving up – I have to practice even more!
Eyeliner is the only thing I sometimes use for eyes beside mascara. But still sometimes (actually, often) despite many years of practice I don’t like how it looks
Not a fan of winged eyeliner, but you did a pretty neat job while drawing. Never knew the dots between the eyelashes could help.
Wow! I didn’t know that it was done like that! Great tutorial!
Great! i always apply the mascara first, but i have to try your way!
XOXO
Great tips!!! It’s always so hard to put the eyeliner…Usually it’s the last thing I put on, and I always make a mess with it, so I have to take off all the make up and do it all again from the start
I’ll try with your advices then!!!
That’s lovely. You make it look so simple. I always mess up the winged part.
you are right this can end up bleary eyed smudged and nasty- im going to give your way a go with all the tiny dots- never tried that before so fingers crossed!kisses katie.xx

I go on and off winged eyeliner. Sometimes I think a thinner wing looks nice with a red lip – very Marilyn, classic.

i love this look, but i can never get the ‘wings’ at the same angle. i’m going to try this method and see how it goes!
Ooo, the dots are a good idea – I will have to try that! thanks!
That looks amazing, I might try that out on the weekend.

Great tips! What nail polish color/brand are you wearing? I really like it.
xx
I always wing my eyeliner being it really flatters my eye shape (which is an almond shape). I’ve occasionally used liquid but for most days it’s a kohl liner just because it’s easier to apply. Your technique with the dots seems super easy, so maybe I’ll give liquid another go. Thanks for the great tutorial!
makes your face look stronger, i like

I love it , it looks really cute on you
Perfect wing! =D
your skin is flawless! i’m curious about the products you use for your face care/make up regimen…?
Ha! I like how you described your first attempt at creating this look.
Love it, keep up with the great work Em, fabulous x
you made that look so easy! I actually have the most trouble when I try to line under my eye!
I had never thought of using the dotting technique… but you’re totally right! If you don’t do something like that to cover up, you get the atrocious-looking liner right above bared skin. Thanks

Like many of the other folks that have commented…what color is your nail polish? I really like it!
I’ve been a master of the winged line for years, but have actually never tried the joined up dots along the lash line – so i’m going to do this tomorrow! Looking gorgeous as always.

Always good to learn!
I always freak out when I try to do even eyeliner and end up smudging it because it’s never eve on both eyes
Thank you, Emily! I’m so hopeless with liquid liner but this tutorial is absolutely fab — I’ll have to try it this fall!

This is a great how to, I never wear eyeliner, maybe I’ll start!

Very beautiful.

My problem is that my eyeliner is always smeared somewhere because it never dries fast enough.
I did not know about step 2, thanks!
What nail polish are you wearing? I love that color!
I would have never thought to do the dots in between the lashes – how clever. Thanks so much for this how-to’s! xoxo
BRILLIANT. This suits you so well.
I always try to do this, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. It’s nice knowing there’s an actual process that works for somebody. SO pretty.
Oh, score! I had given up on liquid liner after too many failures, but I’ll give it another go now that I have some guidance. Thanks!
Gorgeous! Whenever I’ve tried to do the winged look, I feel like the angle of the “wing” part on each eye doesn’t match up. lol. Maybe with a little practice I could eventually figure it out.

love it! great tip (:
Thank you for this… it’s always terribly tragic when I attempt winged eyeliner.

What a great how-to! Very “LC” … Thanks for sharing!
I’ve never been good with liquid eyeliner, but I recently found a cream liner from Urban Decay that gives nearly the same result! What is your favorite makeup brand?
gr8 tip! thx so much
Pretty! Love it! I’m a daily liquid liner gal – have you tried Loreal’s Telescopic liquid liner? It’s my current fave besides Mac’s pot eyeliner.
xx Vivian @ http://diamondsandtulle.blogspot.com
Thank you so much for the tutorial! I use Make Up Forever’s pencil liner because liquid kind of scares me, but this makes me want to give it a go! The pictures definitely help a ton in the “how to”! Thanks, Emily!

this looks fabulous on you! thanks for the tip

luv it! I didn’t know the tiny dot tip. very fab!
this is one of my all-time favorite makeup looks and I even cheat a little sometimes and just do the last half/end of my eye for the winged liner – makes it easier in a time crunch!
bex.
great tutorial!! I love your exaggerated wingtip!
xx

Gorgeous! I always get the phantom second line as soon as I blink. So I stick with the dry cake liner..

Thanks for the tutorial, but what I am more entranced by is the colour of your eyes. Stunning!
Just in time to practice with all the new MAC liquid liners that just came out – I’m going to try the dotting tip. I’ve never done that before.
Thank you for this! I love your tutorials and always want more!! Keep them coming, please!
thanks for the little dots suggestion! my liner always comes out a lil crooked

You make it look so easy!! Great Tutorial…

Hi Emily. I don’t know you and you don’t know me. I guess that is how the blogging world works, right? I found your blog thru my cousins. I absolutely adore you, your blog, baking skills and your style. Also your bf is a talented photographer! Thank you for your inspiration to me on baking!
You can definitely pull off the wing look! You are naturally beautiful. Thank you for the tutorial and all your wonderful posts.
This is so helpful!! Thanks! I’m going to try this next time I go out
im not very talented when it comes to putting on makeup…i think i would fail at this LOL

I would seriously never have thought of putting my mascara on first! Maybe that’s where I go wrong.
I do this almost everyday. Love it.
teehee…great tutorial! I try to avoid liquid eyeliner though because the last time I wore it was at a wedding and it ran all over my face whenever I teared up…I looked like I was in a horror film! haha…maybe I’ll give it another try.

The same happened to me when I tried liquid eyeliner for the first time. After 6 years of wearing it I can safely say that i’ve mastered the art!
x
great tip !
I like the connect the dots idea, but I always apply eyeliner before mascara because otherwise the mascara smudges too much.
hi emily, I like the nail polish, what color is that?
thanks for the tips.
Thank you so much for this!! It actually worked on me which really shocked me!!
^_^*
So pretty! Great tips, as usual.

Thanks for the tips, it looks beautiful!
Hellooo! I have been having cupcake withdrawal. I sit in a big open cube at this job and really cannot check blogs. So lame, right?! Anyway, I love this look. So pretty and I also like doing it with the kind of MAC liquid liner that comes in a shadow box and is applied with a wet brush.
Is it easier to do a winged eye with liquid?
Thanks for the tutorial.
so pretty and retro!
cheers,
Kim

This is such a great tutorial. I have yet to perfect the liquid eyeliner technique, I usually just use a pencil eyeliner. But I will try using your tips! xo

I love love love your how-to posts and product recommendations, they are always spot on….i adore your style!
that seems a tad complicated, but I think I’ll try it anyway. THnx
Always been a fan! Another tip, if you’re afraid of smudging, is to dip an eyeliner brush in water and then into your favorite shadow. Use this as liquid eyeliner. It doesn’t smudge too much.
sweet tutorial! i always manage to eff up this look. next time, i shall follow your instructions to a “t”.

I try it almost everyday, with the intention to get it right this time. But until now it has almost never worked… I’m going to try the dotting-thing immediately. Fingers crossed!

I had never heard of dotting the eye liner between the lashes, but that makes so much sense now! I’ve always struggled to make it look like the liner is right along the lash line instead of leaving a peak of eyelid between the two. Now I just need to try it out!
- Meredith
Great Demo… Thanks!
Oooh thanks Emily
I wish I could do it, I look like a panda when I try, haha!
http://www.raindropsofsapphire.com
Thanks for the tips. I’ll give it another try cos when you do it properly it looks great.
This is a beautiful look! BeautyXpose, the beauty blog I write for also features simple how-tos for other eyeliner looks.
Yours looks great! I use the same technique, however and one eye always looks more awake/bigger than the other. Maybe my hands are unsteady…
What color nail polish are you wearing? Its perfect for fall!

Emily, please do not laugh at me but I tried this technique last night and you have no idea how wrong it went for m
. I want it my make up to look a little different last night since Thursday nights is when I have special dinner dates with my BF (we lived together but we went on our first date on a Thursday and since then we have kept it a tradition. I know is a little silly). It was a complete disaster lol. I am not very good with liquid eye liner but for sure I am an expert with pencil and super dark eye shadows! Thanks for the tip
i love your nail polish! what color/brand is it?
How fun! I don’t even own liquid eyeliner—off to Target I go!
Good job! I would be a MESS!
Lovely tutorial!

I have to try it harder! the winged part still not work for me ;(
Thanks for the ‘dots’ tip i didn’t know that.
great blog
!
You can also use pencil on the upper inner eye-line instead of liquid.. I find that it’s easier and there’s less of a chance of messing up!

you have flawless skin! what do you use??
Perfect! I love the dotting between the lashes tip, I’ll definitely be trying it.

This is a great tutorial! You’re make up looks amazing! Also, a great alternative to liquid liner is fluid liner. MAC has amazing fluid liner. I think Maybelline has one too. Applied with an angled liner brush gives the same effect but less mess. It doesn’t smudge and never runs if it gets wet.
xoxo Anna
Wow you’re a pro
I kinda gave up on the liquid eyeliner, but with this tutorial, I think I’ll give it another try! x
Love this look! I used to be a hopeless wreck with liquid eyeliner as well, but with some practice I did get better
This was very useful!

Love your nail polish; please, please, please tell us what it is!!

your makeup looks beautiful in these photos. i wish i was skilled with liquid liner, i think i need an in-person how-to! hope you had a lovely summer! xo
thank you for very good method!
it’s very helpful
Fool proof!!! I tried it once and behold – a perfect line! My eye liner will be MUCH more used due to this post! Thank you:)
Thanks for this! I am so bad with liquid liner, so I use gel eyeliner instead. I can never manage to make both sides the same length!
interesting tip about the dots, but what I’m really blown away by is the fact that you curl your lashes and put mascara on before you draw the line! Don’t the curly lashes get in your way?! I always have to curl last…
Saved to my bookmarks! My problem though is that I don’t know where to stop the line! ;/
I love this it I especially love how its very Audrey Hepburn:)
One of my favorite (almost everyday) looks! I’ll have to try the dotted line trick. Fab!
xx

Thank you so much for this explanation!! I have tried so many times but it never looked good! Now Im enjoying doign it!! Thanks!!!
This is amazing It’s helped sooo much! Thanks!
MORE HOW TO’S PLEASE!!
seriously youre slacking on them!

Another helpful tip…put your mirror flat on a table and look down to do eye make-up. I did this for years and found it much easier than looking ahead. [And saved my pennies and now have permanent eyeliner tattoo -- and LOVE it]
I saw this post last night and went to bed excited to give it a try today. Like many others, would like to know the name of the nail polish you are wearing in these pics.
You make that look so easy! With a bit of practise I might achieve the look
what color/brand of nail polish are you wearing in these pictures? I love it!
Love it. What nail color are you wearing? Looks great for Fall.
Nail polish is to die for! Can you share the info on brand/color?
No matter how many time I try to do this it never comes out right which sucks,
I love this… I’m asian so I don’t wanna look too asian but I usually do this look once or twice a week and I LOVE it! Thank you!!!!!!!!
Thanx!helped alot! Love it!! I usually try mascara after I do the eyeliner, just so that I can reach the lowest part of my eyelid with the liner! Thanx again
I absolutely love your blog so cute. What a mix of some of everything. It makes me want to cook!
i used glamorous liquid liner for this look and it gave a great liquid look
