How To: Messy Bun
I’ve been wearing my hair in some sort of messy updo for most of my life. While it’s certainly a simple way to battle a bad hair day, I’ve surprisingly received numerous requests to see just how it’s done. It helps to have hair that hasn’t been washed for at least a day and the best thing is that it doesn’t have to look too perfect.

I love wearing my hair up in a messy type ‘do! Yours is adorable!
Great tutorial! I absolutely adore that hairstyle on you! Not sure if I’d be able to pull it off though since my hair isn’t as long as your’s.
You should post more tutorials! Keep up the good work.

I will try to make it!

Pretty! Do you think this would work for wavy/curly hair?
thank you so much for the tutorial!
Yay! I’ve been admiring this hairstyle of yours recently. I think it’s so cute and carefree. I’ll try it tonight.
One problem I think I might have is that it might not stay in place. I have long heavy hair and I think the whole thing might just topple over! lol. Any tips on how I can avoid this?
You pull this hairstyle off so well, but it just doesn’t work for me AT ALL (sadly). Probably doesn’t help that my hair just SLIPS through the band after a few minutes, haha.
I love your hair.
Nice watch.
You make me wish I didn’t cut my hair! You make this look so easy and you definitely wear it well!
luv it..its so easy to do.
thats so easily but looks so cool as well ,, will try it already:)
Thanks for the cute tutorial!
I just always feel that my hair isn’t voluminous enough for the updo
you’re the only person i know who wears their ponytail as high as me!! <3
I used to love to wear my hair in an updo, just got mine cut and they’re not long enough anymore :’(
This mini tutorial is so cute! (:
my friends and i JUST discussed how long it took us to figure this out when we were young. now it’s second nature to throw up a messy bun; back then it seemed like rocket science. wish i had this tutorial then!
Love it! You look so cute!

Love Love messy hair!
–your watch and bracelet jumped wrists midway through! haha! (:
Sooo cute!
Thank you Emily!!
I love messy hair, it’s such a cute look! I generally have my hair thrown up in a messy bun too, it’s much easier to wear than hair down and in your face! (“,)_SequinsandBangles_xx

a “how to” about the braiding from your recent post would be cool too
Fab! And I love your watch!! I’ve seen it in other photos too. A post on it, and your other jewellery, would be great!
very cute although i do think that you need hair of a certain texture to be able to achieve certain hairstyles, i think ihave wayyyyy too much hair but i’m gonna give it a whirl anyway! plus its a good excuse not to wash my hair today!!!
Thanks for the info! You really do make it look so simple. Why doesn’t mine look like that?! Oh well, I will keep attempting!
Yay! I was hoping for this! I think that is a hair style that I can even manage
. Thanks!!

I usually do the same thing, only tighter:)
I wear my hair like this daily….only I don’t look as put together. You hair is just flawless…
I Love your hair! Adorable!

Very cool How to. Love it
ha! I love it. I am queen of this look. Okay maybe princess, you can be queen. I am not picky.
Thanks for the tutorial. For some reason I doubt I will be able to do it as nicely as you do!

I’m so glad you finally posted this. I have tried and tried to perfect the messy bun and I swear my hair is anti-messy bun
I love it!
you make that look extremely easy and super cute.

You have such great hair for this!
Jeals:)
Ach, I wish my hair were long enough. It’d just stick out in all directions and make me look like I’d stuck my finger in a light socket.
My pretty, pretty friend:) I haven’t washed my hair in a couple days (not by choice) and might just try this hairdo today. My own bad hair day solution is a tight pony on top of my head a la Pebbles. Not quite as cute!
YES! Im SO glad you posted this – your messy bun always looks so perfect!!
I normally gather my messy bun at the nape of my neck, but I will try your style out the next time I don’t feel like wrestling with my brush.
wow, you make it look so easy ahaa, I wish I had your hair xx
This slightly makes me want to grow my hair out… but only slightly.
You are so pretty, not everyone can look good in a messy up do!
I wish I could pull this look off as easily as you!! You look gorgeous!

I am so happy “the messy bun” was still a fixture on the runways for fall. I am definitely not done with this look!

if only i had hair long enough to put it up into a mess of a bun *sigh*
Love it!!!

i’m guessing your hair color is naturally dark brown? i have medium brown hair and i’d love to do mines like yours (with the blonde) you should post a picture if you get a touch up
i will definitely keep this as reference for when i want to make a messy bun cause it’s so cute
Love it!!
Cute tutorial! I think it works best with your hair that seems to be very full with a lot of texture and kind of light (if that makes sense)? My thick, stick straight, Asian hair is so heavy and the floppy part never looks like a nice loop like yours. It literally just flops arond lie one big weight. Love your hair!
xx Vivian @ http://diamondsandtulle.blogspot.com
LOVE it! I’ve admired your bun for a while. Thanks for the how-to. Quick question – what do you do for highlights? How often do you get them? I don’t color my hair, but the dark days of winter in Vermont make me feel like I need to brighten it up around my face.
That hair-do looks so awesome with your hair Emily! Not everyone could pull it off. xo

Ohhh how I miss my long hair.

I wear my hair like this from time to time too b/c it is such an easy way to look effortlessly put together. I have so much hair so it becomes tedious to try to style it all the time. It’s totally cute on you!
I love look of messy buns.

I love this look, especially for spring and summer with all those fun beachy dresses headed our way:)

Love it! I’m such a dummy when it comes to fixing my hair so this is perfect for me. I’m reposting (with full credit to you) on my site. Thanks!
Haha, this is a great tutorial, I love it! I have three hairstyles that I do, hair down, hair half up, and hair in ponytail and that is all. I really need to mix things up!! Thanks for sharing!
wow, great tutorial! i’ve been wondering how people do messy bun & & & now i know!
so cute! i don’t think I could pull that hairdo off, but you look great!
hahahaha this is tooo cute

love this! I usually end up putting my hair up in some form of done/not done up do…it’s so comfortable and easy and stylish. of course mine usually ends up looking like a big, curly mess but it works!
I too have been rockin’ the messy bun since about age 11. Once you go bun, you never go back. It’s so hard to wear my hair down! Thanks for the how-to.
GORGEOUS! I can’t wait for my hair to be long again! I can barely make a pony tail!

My messy bun looks nothing like this, your is much cuter. I fear when I try this it will not turn out as cute. Thanks for sharing!

My hair is still a wee bit too short for this, but I’m definitely going to try it when it’s long enough! Thanks for the step by step.
I love this! Thank goodness for messy updos.. they save my life everyday hahaa.
xoxo
So excited you posted this! I’ve been wanting to see this how to for so long. Def trying this out when I get home, although I’m doubtful my wavy hair will come out looking as perfect as yours does.
see now, that looks fabulous on you, but i’m pretty sure that would end up a hot damn mess of me!!!

Gorgeous, only certain hair can pull off that hair style! Looks good

Cute! My hair would so not do that but it looks good on you!
amazing how you’ve managed to make a sloppy bun look stylish! thanks for the how-to.
When my hair is longer this is my favorite way to wear my hair.
Simple Adorable.
So easy and looks great – thanks!
great tutorial! have a feeling that when i do it, i’ll look like a geisha, but looks amazing & effortless on you!
great tutorial! a few days ago i was actually wondering to myself how you did your hair.. lol thanks for sharing
Effortless glamour! The perfect look for a hectic day
http://thestylistla.blogspot.com
thats brilliant
i would really like theway you have done that,

thanks
I did that today – I usually add a headband too for the days when I don’t have time to do my bangs
LOOOOOVE IT! I’m SO doing that tomorrow!
thank you!!! so cute. how do you get the hair to stay in place around the elastic — just tuck it in at the end? adorable!
I love this! I think I’m going to run to the bathroom and do this right now!
Great tips! Thanks for sharing!
I am SO doing this everyday for school! xx
You have the best hair! Love how you cover up the hair tie – a nice touch!

Very cute!
I’m very bad at doing my hair, but this looks like something even I could do. Definitely going to try it. Thanks for the post.
Cute! You made it look so easy even I could do it( I think…)

It looks so cute on you! It’s that long hair with all the great texture.
you are too cute. I look like a fool when I try the messy updo, but on you it’s perfect!
I kind of think you look like Pebbles (from the Flintstones) but I guess that’s not always a bad thing?
Love it on you, but my frizzy Botticelli curls look *too* messy when I do this. Oh, to have straight hair….
This would be a great addition to the “five minute face” routine
Perfect! If only I had seen this before I had all my hair cut off…

<3 your DIY. I have so many layers that strands stick out from all sides which makes it difficult for any style to stay in place.
Gorgeous. I love a messy bun! I wore one the other day and I swear my husband called me a “duck.” I couldn’t quite tell if that was a compliment or whatever, but I found it endearing and will do it again!
My hair is not quite long enough to do this special messy bun. Love the tutorial though… People always used to call it “the flop” when I did it back in highschool…hahahhahaaha
This is awesome – I wear my hair like this or in a ponytail nearly every day too, and it is nice to see that others find it fashionable…with girls taking so much time to straighten their hair I sometimes feel sloppy.
Aaaah yes!!! The messy bun!!! My hair has been getting so long, and that’s been a lifesaver!!! Love your tutorials!
Love your tutorials!
Just tried it…love it!
Oh and also love the watch.
http://www.theworstwurst.blogspot.com
fast, cute and simple. U r a hero!
Love the Bun! I have been envious of your hair for so long, I am such a fan of any messed up do, much more fun than neat, and much more manageable.
Also- watch envy, SIGH.

It is so funny that you posted this. I was flipping my hair up on top of my head last night to make dinner in my “sloppy bun” that I’ve been sporting I guess since HS. And I thought how DOES Emily do that? I love this tutorial! I almost had it right – now I just have to let more hair go willy nilly to get it to look like yours! Thank you!
yup i think i was one of the dozens of people who asked for this tutorial, so thanks! my hair still won’t cooperate but at least now i can practice lol
One of my fave ways to wear my hair–whether curly or straight!
Perfect!
xx
I threw my hair up like this for a last minute sorority function and got so many compliments, I ended up wearing it out to a casual dinner with my boyfriend after! Thanks so much for the how-to!!
I wore my hair in a messy bun to work today because my hair was dirty and somebody asked if I had seen how to do it on your blog!
I had to look it up and see how you did it because there is really no method to my madness when throwing my hair in a bun on the way out the door! *Face Doctorette*
I really LOVE the hairdo! I tried doing it like 20x yesterday and couldnt get it right =/ My hair isnt as long as yours but im still going 2 try and get it right! Thanks for the idea!

I am going to try this tmrw. Looks so easy and cool
The hair do was great, You look so cute in that.
But my hair is so curly and does not look good, it looks dry and frizzy always!
Bises,
7jades.
Emily, you’re so cute! I wanted to tell you that I can never get a ‘messy’ bun, it always end up too perfect and ‘ballerina’ style. Well I tried your tricks and it worked for me! I wore it to work even the other day, love it

cute. I love doing these too- although my hair is not quite as long as yours so the effect is a little different. I think one thing that makes this work is your highlights- you’ve got a great colorist!
I did this today and got nothing but compliments on it
I never look as pretty as you are in this hair style :-/
Too cute! I’m waiting patiently for my hair to grow out so that I can do this as well as a messy side braid. Can’t wait!
that is adorable, just wish i had strait hair to play with. Mine is so curly
Very cute – I do something similar to my hair on the weekends – but have never tried wrapping the hair around (new idea :})
PS I adore your blog – make it a great day!
Gorgeous! Thanks for the tips, although I think my hair is too fine to hold this updo :*(
The perfectly messy updo only occurs rarely when I’m throwing my hair up to brush my teeth for bed.. and there are never any witnesses! And after reading this tutorial, I thought HA! that will never work on MY curly hair.
But this worked a charm! Thanks heaps
I love this!
I tried it out and got some compliments on it!
xxx
awesome tutorial. my hair is not long enough to make it look as cute as you but hopefully I’ll be able to sport the messy bun soon!
I’ve just tried to make your strawberry meringue recipe you suggested…. Mine are not as beautiful as yours, but they taste delicious! Where did you find the cupcake liners? They are very fun.
HOW AND WHEN DO YOU COVER THE ELASTIC WITH YOUR HAIR?! THAT PART ALWAYS MESSES UP FOR ME!
HELP!
