How To: Dewy Make-up

August 10th, 2009

I keep hearing that matte make-up is going to be huge for fall, but I still think there’s nothing prettier than a dewy finish.  It radiates light and makes your skin appear fresh, young and energized.  Here are my steps to achieve a glowy look that’s perfect for daytime.

Products I use:

-Tinted Moisturizer: Laura Mercier.
-Bronzer: Bare Escentuals.
-Concealer: TimeBalm.
-Shimmer Powder: MAC.
-Highlighter Cream: benefit.
-Eyelash Curler: Shu Uemura.
-Mascara: Maybelline.
-Cheek Stain: Tarte.

Just marvelous! I’m also partial to Spotlight by Benefit. It’s a rosy tinted liquid highlighter — so it looks a little more believable on a pale skintone like mine. :)

Great tutorial! And you’re so beautiful, as always :)

  • Elyse

I love this look! Could you maybe do a tutorial for matte makeup though?

great tutorial. I am a fan of the dewy look as well. you look gorgeous in the end result, but I have to say, you looked just as stunning at the beginning. no fair! :) luckily, I have the bronzer you used and I believe I have some highlighting products by benefit somewhere in the bottomless pit called my makeup train case!

Just lovely! I’m a fan of the dewy look too – which is sometimes difficult w/my dry skin. Our steps and products are almost identical but I use Stila’s tinted moisturizer w/SPF.
Q:on the Tarte cheek stain – do you find it makes you breakout at all? I love their cheek stains but after a few days of it, I seem to start breaking out from it.

I am loving the look. Can I ask what shade of bronzer you use? And do you own any of the beneFit concealers? I am in Australia and so most of these products are cheaper to buy on-line, but harder to match your skin tone. I also use the tinted moisturiser in Sand, so I am guessing the concealers/bronzers would suit as well. Is the cheek stain ‘flush’?
sorry for the questions! great blog. I stumbled on it via Cup of Jo and have spent the last few days trawling old posts – thanks for sharing!

  • MSL

Gorgeous but you do have an advantage before ever beginning the make-up process!:)
Don’t forget to apply SPF everyday–you live in sunny CA and that tinted moisturizer with SPF ain’t gonna cut it. You will thank me for it when you get to be about 40 and things start becoming noticeable. Can I suggest La Roche Posay–the BEST–you won’t even notice under make-up yet you get the broadest SPF available (CVS Pharmacy).

  • Becky

I love that you have helped me figure out what to do with my makeup! I am desperate for more!!!!

Question… do you think there is a cheaper product you could substitute for the highlighter cream/pencil? I don’t know that i can spend $20 right now but i really really want to try this!!! Any suggestions??

This is such a beautiful look! Another way to achieve a ‘dewy’ look is to do all face makeup other than eyes and sit in a hot bath for a few minutes. It’s like a two in one of getting clean and achieving a ‘dewy’ makeup look – result!

  • Natalie

Just tried this tonight and I love it! My new summer routine, I think! Thanks :-)

  • Alexis

This is such a great way to do make up. I did it last night for a party and i got so many complements :)

I never knew the whole white highlighter pencil thing. That makes so much more sense than cover-up under the eyes. I was looking at some pics from this summer and I had huge raccoon eyes. I’m trying this for sure.
