How To: Dewy Make-up

I keep hearing that matte make-up is going to be huge for fall, but I still think there’s nothing prettier than a dewy finish.  It radiates light and makes your skin appear fresh, young and energized.  Here are my steps to achieve a glowy look that’s perfect for daytime.

make-up-how-to.jpg

Products I use:

-Tinted Moisturizer: Laura Mercier.
-Bronzer: Bare Escentuals.
-Concealer: TimeBalm.
-Shimmer Powder: MAC.
-Highlighter Cream: benefit.
-Eyelash Curler: Shu Uemura.
-Mascara: Maybelline.
-Cheek Stain: Tarte.

thanks for the tips.. your skin looks perfect at the end

Great tutorial! You should try under-eye concealer, too – I find it makes a huge difference in the brightness of the eyes and makes you look much more awake! :)

This is a great look. Very natural!

I agree, Em—I’m always more into a dewy look. I use Nars The Multiple on my cheeks and brow bones for a similar effect and have loved it for years. You look so pretty:)

Looks amazing, thanks for the tips! I’ve found that Benefit’s High Beam is a great tool for the look!

14 Sarah { 08.10.09 at 6:43 am }

i love laura mercier’s tinted moisturizer and concealers (my current favorite is the undercover pot). every now and then, i’ll branch out…i’ll try TimeBalm next, I think…..:)

I agree- I am not the biggest fan of the matte look!

21 Erin { 08.10.09 at 8:08 am }

You look so pretty! Highlighter is the best. I use it in the corners of my eyes when I’m tired, makes you look right awake! Happy Monday! XO!

22 Wanderlusting { 08.10.09 at 8:18 am }

Very pretty – Stila Illuminating Moisturizer is the best in my opinion – always makes me look radiant. However I naturally have a very oily face so I have to keep it easy – I tend to go for the matte look to balance it out.

I have that cheek tinte – love it.

23 Kristina { 08.10.09 at 8:33 am }

Well, if my face started out looking like yours, I think this would be pretty easy!

24 Emma Jones { 08.10.09 at 8:36 am }

i definitely need to get a highlighter

34 TheBeautyFile { 08.10.09 at 10:22 am }

Pretty- I think the cheek stain is a great alternative to blush for that dewy look. I’m as big fan of the highlighter…for so many places on the face…little teeny bit goes such a long way!

35 Heidi { 08.10.09 at 10:35 am }

Gorgeous! Dewy over matte any day. I kind of cheat and apply some serum on my face over my tinted moisturizer and powder. It adds a good dose of dew w/o any grease.

36 Elizabeth { 08.10.09 at 10:53 am }

beautiful! i love your makeup posts. keep it up! :)

37 Joan { 08.10.09 at 11:10 am }

What mascara from Maybelline do you use? I use “colossal volume” or something (the one in the yellow bottle) and it works really well… only I think I may be allergic to something in it =(

I just love your lashes and was wondering which one you used. Thanks!

38 Haley { 08.10.09 at 11:12 am }

absolutely lovely

39 Jen { 08.10.09 at 11:12 am }

I love the end product! I usually don’t wear a lot of makeup AT ALL, but your how to looks like you have nothing on! Oh and I have to ask, did your bf take these too or did you take them yourself?

40 Kate { 08.10.09 at 11:20 am }

Your makeup is always so flawless. Love Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer— such an amazing product.

41 Ellen { 08.10.09 at 11:20 am }

Beautiful! And you make it look so easy!! I will have to give it a try. Thanks!!

42 leigh { 08.10.09 at 11:34 am }

you are so fabulous! and laura mercier is a godsend, seriously. i can’t live without that tinted moisturizer. well, maybe i could live, but it wouldn’t be pretty.

ps: i have an austin street style blog, http://www.commonbirds.wordpress.com. stop by if you’d like!

I use almost all of those products, you look beautiful!

44 Rachel (Heart of Light) { 08.10.09 at 11:41 am }

This is pretty much my daily makeup routine! I’ve never gotten over our love of that Neutrogena shimmery lotion we found in college.

45 Dawn { 08.10.09 at 11:45 am }

just tried it – PERFECT!!!

46 fashion court { 08.10.09 at 11:47 am }

the dewy look is the best. i honestly have no patience with makeup so i basically just throw on lipgloss or benefit posietint.

47 Couture Carrie { 08.10.09 at 11:55 am }

Gorgeous, darling! Will have to try that Benefit highlighter cream!

lovely meeting you too! xo

49 debtonaire { 08.10.09 at 2:41 pm }

so pretty! is the benefit highlighter Mr. Frosty or something else? thanks for the great tutorial . . .

50 debtonaire { 08.10.09 at 2:51 pm }

oh, i just got the link to work . . .the Benefit product IS Mr. Frosty. thanks!

51 Cammila { 08.10.09 at 2:56 pm }

Just marvelous! I’m also partial to Spotlight by Benefit. It’s a rosy tinted liquid highlighter — so it looks a little more believable on a pale skintone like mine. :)

52 Farrah { 08.10.09 at 3:39 pm }

Great tutorial! And you’re so beautiful, as always :)

53 Elyse { 08.10.09 at 4:23 pm }

I love this look! Could you maybe do a tutorial for matte makeup though?

54 Laken { 08.10.09 at 5:16 pm }

I love that you do tutorials! Thank you :)

55 Carissa { 08.10.09 at 5:53 pm }

great tutorial. I am a fan of the dewy look as well. you look gorgeous in the end result, but I have to say, you looked just as stunning at the beginning. no fair! :) luckily, I have the bronzer you used and I believe I have some highlighting products by benefit somewhere in the bottomless pit called my makeup train case!

56 connie { 08.10.09 at 7:42 pm }

gorgeous gorgeous..you are!

57 Hola!Design { 08.10.09 at 7:52 pm }

58 modernmommablog { 08.10.09 at 8:19 pm }

I’ve always been a matte make-up kind of girl. I never knew how to try the dewy look. Thanks for the tips. I’ll give it a try.

59 french cloud { 08.10.09 at 9:12 pm }

Face Stocholm has a highliter named Dignity and it is amazing!

63 Podszewka { 08.11.09 at 7:21 am }

I will try make up like u ;-) )) hehe

64 Vivian { 08.11.09 at 7:49 am }

Just lovely! I’m a fan of the dewy look too – which is sometimes difficult w/my dry skin. Our steps and products are almost identical but I use Stila’s tinted moisturizer w/SPF.
Q:on the Tarte cheek stain – do you find it makes you breakout at all? I love their cheek stains but after a few days of it, I seem to start breaking out from it.

65 mindy { 08.11.09 at 5:02 pm }

i’m so trying this….thanks for the tips! i’m sure it doesn’t hurt that your skin is absolutely flawless!

66 Alicia { 08.11.09 at 7:53 pm }

I tried a lower-key version of this today and man!!!! It worked beautifully. Thanks for the tutorial! =D

I found your blog through stumbleupon, and spent the rest of the week reading the entire thing. I just wanted to thank you, because I tried this how-to today, and I look AMAZING. I’m definitely going to keep reading.

so perfect!!!

80 Peta { 08.23.09 at 7:40 pm }

I am loving the look. Can I ask what shade of bronzer you use? And do you own any of the beneFit concealers? I am in Australia and so most of these products are cheaper to buy on-line, but harder to match your skin tone. I also use the tinted moisturiser in Sand, so I am guessing the concealers/bronzers would suit as well. Is the cheek stain ‘flush’?
sorry for the questions! great blog. I stumbled on it via Cup of Jo and have spent the last few days trawling old posts – thanks for sharing!

81 MSL { 09.15.09 at 7:41 am }

Gorgeous but you do have an advantage before ever beginning the make-up process!:)
Don’t forget to apply SPF everyday–you live in sunny CA and that tinted moisturizer with SPF ain’t gonna cut it. You will thank me for it when you get to be about 40 and things start becoming noticeable. Can I suggest La Roche Posay–the BEST–you won’t even notice under make-up yet you get the broadest SPF available (CVS Pharmacy).

82 Becky { 09.23.09 at 10:03 pm }

I love that you have helped me figure out what to do with my makeup! I am desperate for more!!!!

Question… do you think there is a cheaper product you could substitute for the highlighter cream/pencil? I don’t know that i can spend $20 right now but i really really want to try this!!! Any suggestions??

bgrimnes{at}gmail{dot}com

thank you!!
