How To: Braided Updo

April 14th, 2010

For most of my life, I’ve wanted thinner hair.  When little girls in my class secured their entire head of hair with a single little clip, I suffered from headaches whenever I wore pigtails.  Over the years I’ve slowly learned to appreciate my hair, especially when I can turn a classic braid into a romantic updo.  Here are my steps to creating the look I sported here.

Ugh…Emily, you do NOT want thin hair. Trust me. You can’t do anything with it. No curling (it falls down), no half up styles (or you can see your scalp), no clipping up (it’ll just fall out of the clip).

It’s really sad. I would much rather have your hair.

I’ve found my new canoe do! (and/or night out on the town when I have not time to curl or straighten do)! Thank you girl! ox

How lovely! I suffered from thin hair envy too as a young girl and to this day get painful pony tail headaches. Great tutorial for us abundant-haired folk. Although I need to now grow mine about 10 inches.

Wow, Emily, that’s a great hairstyle, but I couldn’t stop staring at your hair color! It’s growing out SO BEAUTIFULLY and I actually love the darker roots and underneath. Is there a better picture that I can show to my stylist to see if I could achieve this color?

great tutorial..:) I had the same “problem” when I was younger, always wanting thinner hair..and always when I went to the hairdresser they used the razor to make it a lot “less”..:P but now I’m happy about it..still..I just recently cut almost half of it off and soon I might cut more..I want to try out the big thick fringe..:) and if I had really thin hair I might not be able to do that either:P

I can totally relate to the pain of having thick hair when you’re a little girl! Yes, we sound like those girls who complain about being too pretty and being discriminated against. But. I’m not one of those girls who can just throw it up in a bun with one elastic. No… it’s a web of pins up there! I have painful memories of painstaking updos for ballet! When my hair is long enough, this is going to be perfect! Two months away, maybe? Thank you so much for this tutorial, gal!

    This is so fabulous!

I just tried it but can’t decide if it looks bohemian-chic or like Martha Washington. Hmm. Try again?
