How To: Braided Updo
For most of my life, I’ve wanted thinner hair. When little girls in my class secured their entire head of hair with a single little clip, I suffered from headaches whenever I wore pigtails. Over the years I’ve slowly learned to appreciate my hair, especially when I can turn a classic braid into a romantic updo. Here are my steps to creating the look I sported here.

Great tutorial! And I am so glad my hair is almost long enough to try it!

Yay, the tutorial I’ve been waiting for!
hopelessly romantic…and a charming update to my favorite spring side braid.

Super I’m going to give this a go pronto- thanks for the how to and it seems do- able!! X katie Fashionclocked.
Gorgeous!
What a nice hairdo. I did something very similar, just the other way around (a knot of the braids on the lower back of my head), but will try this as well, thx for sharing
Whish my hair was longer ! It’s lovely and really easy actually ! Thanks !
it looks beautiful! unfortunately, even though my hair is long it is too straight for this..
looks great on you though!
i was wondering how to this when i read your post yesterday! iv always had thick hair and wished my whole childhood for thinner hair! funny the things we wish for as a child! lol xoxx
Trop jolie cette coiffure ! =)
Love the hairdo, unfortanetly my hair is too thin and too short
Love this style! My hair is only shoulder length but I can do the same style if I fasten the braids at the nape of the neck on the hair line rather than on top. Yours looks so gorgeous though! x
I’m scared my hairs are not long enough
(
Oooh I don’t think my hair is long enough yet. I’m one of those girls who constantly feels the need to get a trim. If only I could wait it out!
That looks so nice!
This is a great look. Thanks for another brilliant ‘how to.’
An inspiring little tutorial
Will try it out in a few months -once my hair reaches the length needed.
Would have loved some different angle photos of the end result, though…
it looks great on you this hairdo. great tutorial!
Great How-To! You look so sweet with your hair like this
http://www.sarabbentley.blogspot.com

yay! I was hoping you’d do a How To on this look after I saw you sporting it in an earlier post…it’s easier than I thought it would be! Thanks again
really lovely!
I feel your pain. I was the little girl who had to have two buns in ballet because my hair wouldn’t fit into one normal-sized bun.
Thanks for this tutorial! Methinks I have a potential hairstyle for my wedding…
Oh, wow, that’s lovely!
I was beginning to lose hope for us thick-haired girls!
xx
Aww soooo dreamy.. I love braided updo.. You look really amazing!
xoxo
This is such a lovely look, but I am not good at braiding my own hair. Maybe I can at least accomplish a side braid.
I love your tutorials!
One day i’ll try to make this look on me.
kiss
what a great look, so cute! you’re lucky to have such beautiful hair, mine will not grow
I love this look and glad you’ve grown to love your thick hair! I have thinner hair and always wanted it to be thicker. I guess we always want what we don’t have.
my hair is a bit too long right now as well !! i will def try this one day
love it!

It looks great with your highlighted hair! I love seeing all the colors weaving in and out.
http://everydaytorunway.wordpress.com
LOVE it! I’m going to try this today!
very cool. this will be a great summer look! trying to keep my long think mane out of the way has always been a chore for me as well. as a child my mom turned to the french braid and various forms of that in order to keep everything intact.

The grass is always greener isn’t it? What I would give for your thick locks!
Really cute. I was actually wondering how you did it in that last outfit post and I am glad you shared the how to.
Love this! Just wish my hair were long enough to braid like this.
beijos-Tiffany
I learned! Awesome!
Cute! Unfortunately, my hair is way too short for this. Sad.
YAY! i love it. thanks for sharing. I have quite a few layers so it might look messy, but I’m definitely going to try it. If it works out I’ll make sure to mention you in of my next blog posts.

Cool!
I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really like your hair like this and thank you soooo much for teaching others how to do it!! I have a Giveaway going on over at my blog so take a look if you have a chance:)
http://www.afashionfixation.blogspot.com/
Believe me, it’s soooo much better to have thick hair. It gets thinner as you get older!
Ahh I was wondering how you did that!! Thanks for the post!
I have always wondered how that look is mastered. Thanks!
Hey! I am going to get my hair colored tomorrow and I’m dying to know how you do yours. It’s fabulous.
I was hoping I would find a post like this today
Thank you!!
Very nice tutorial! I’m going to try this!
It seems so easy! Now if only I could master the actual braiding part of my hair. It falls out while braiding, my hair is “silky” and thin.
i have fine, stick-straight hair and have always wanted thicker, wavier hair! it’s the law of hair dynamics to always want what you don’t have i believe.
So simple yet still beautiful
http://tresladies85.blogspot.com
Thanks for this tutorial! I am going to try this!
You always have such great tutorials×D
love the hair-do…you luck so pretty.

I love the bohemian princess look! It’s the ultimate effortless chic up-do and would be perfect for a spring wedding or special event. It looks especially hot with your highlights, it give you tons of dimension.

Great tutorial! Think this looks beautiful on your highlighted wavy hair. Will have to try it this week for sure, but I’m sure it will look different with my stick straight hair.

I was wondering how you got your hair to look this way. I love it! Thanks so much for sharing!
Boo, now I want my long hair back!
I wore this Heidi braid look often as a kid and loved it. You make it look so modern and fresh.
I love this! I am looking forward to trying it, especially since my hair is finally getting long enough. Thanks for taking the time to show us how!
Beautiful! It looks great.

i wish i could do this with my short hair
Thank you for showing me this because I was going to actually ask you how to do it because it looked so good in your previous post! Thanks!
You have gorgeous hair! I’ve always wished for thicker hair like yours. Great tutorial! I’m really into braids right now, so I’ll definitely try it.
Adorable!! I too have super thick hair and I always resented it. Now I definitely appreciate it more!

thanks for sharing! i wish i had more full-bodied hair so it would look as good as yours. lovely tutorial!
You make that look so easy! Oh, how I wish for thick hair!
YES, thank you for posting this Emily! <3
I wish my hair was that long. It looks beautiful!
I’ll trade you for my wimpy fine hair!
But you can thin your hair if you want. My mom has it done. There are “thinning shears” that cut out a portion of your hair to thin it out.
This is gorgeous! You look absolutely lovely. I also wished for thinner hair, or at least less of it, when I was younger, but I’ve come to appreciate it!

i love this look on you. i will have to try it – although, i’m sure it will NOT look half as good.
LOVE IT! I’m definitely going to try that, my hair might need to be a little longer first, it used to be that long though, haha.
http://aclosetfashionista.blogspot.com/
You’ve always wanted thinner hair?! Well as someone’s whose hair has mysteriously gotten thinner, it sucks. I miss my thicker hair but since our hair changes every 7 years I’m hoping it will come back. This style looks gorgeous!
Love it! So cute and simple.
i love your “how to” posts!!! i really want to try this but i have thin hair..hopefully it will look as great as yours =)

Thank you for sharing this! I was wondering how you did it! Can’t wait to try it out
http://delightfulbitefuls.blogspot.com/
LOVE!!! Thanks for showing us, I was definitely wondering! Also, I wish I had thicker hair.. not that my hair is thin but I crave the volume of thicker/more hair
Soo grateful you posted this! I am always looking for hairstyles that work for thick hair. After you rocked this look in a photo session I wondered how I too could pull it off. I’m going to Vancouver, BC this weekend and will totally rock this look!! I’ll post and reference your tutorial and exquisite photo shoot.
your hair is beautiful. i can’t wait till mine is long enough for this!
I have to say that your one of my favorite blogs and I always look forward to what your post will be all about!! I think you have beautiful hair and I def apprecite the hair tips! I really like the contrast colors you have in it also =)
Your hair tutorials are things I can actually try. Looks great too!
Great post Emily! Love the braids!!!! Now if only my hair were long enough
This is such a cute hairstyle and a great way to pin up your hair so it stays out of your face. I probably wouldn’t be able to pull it off though because my hair is pretty layered. Thanks for the tutorial, though. I definitely plan on trying it in the future.

Looks gorgeous! Makes me wish my hair were longer now.
Wow – this looks amazing!! Sadly, I’ve been hit with the thin hair stick so I could never create this kinda magic. It looks absolutely beautiful though!
LOVE this, wish my hair were longer!!
ex oh ex oh.
charming frivolity.
I always wanted thinner hair too – mine is SO thick! Now if only I had your length I could try this hairstyle! Very cute.
OH MY! Beautiful! I was waiting for this post
My hair is long enough to do this, but maybe someday? Or maybe I will have to try a shorter version of this somehow…the wheels are turning.
thanks!

i was waiting for this post! looks beautiful and i cant wait to try it on my hair!

I am definitely going to give this look a try. it is perfect for summer when you just want your hair out of the way!
http://secondstoryview.com/
I love the updo – so cute! Sadly my hair is short and on the thin side so I won’t be able to achieve this look for some time
You call them bobby pins too! Do you know they call them ”kirby grips” over here in the UK!? I mean, who the hell is kirby??
This looks insanely adorable. I think my hair may be too thin, but I am trying this as soon as I get home. Totally inspired!
http://www.ontheracks.com/
I go back and forth with my hair too. It is so thick and I have tons of it! But, I get to do fun things like braids! I am going to try this weekend! I love your site!
You’re lucky to have such great color/texture to your hair. If I did this, I’d look like Chun Li.
Aw, now I’m missing my hip-length hair. I used to put it up in a similar style, but the braids would wrap all the way around my head!
Hmmmm you have such LOOONG hair so it works…I wonder if it would look similar in style on my shorter hair . Cute how to!

Love this hairstyle.. I actually sported it a few weeks ago.. milkmaid braids!!
thanks for sharing.. yours look fabulous. I have the same probably with my thick hair.. I can’t put it up for too long or I get headaches..
xx Love & Aloha
I adore the look on you and my favorite part is the different highlights coming out in the braids! I used to have “calico” colored blonde hair when I was a girl and my braids looked so cool…all different colors, it’s the best!
no fair! i’ve always had somewhat thin hair, and it’s gotten even thinner now that i’m in my 30s. oh well…
you look so adorable in your braids!
xox alison
oof! i just cut my hair and this tutorial makes me wish i didn’t! super cute
http://lambonthelam.wordpress.com
My goodness. I have done this hairstyle many times, and now I know what I’ve been doing wrong. Your way is much better! I’m going to try these instructions because your hair looks lovely. Thank you, Emily.
I love your website, I recently found it and I am now following. Great tutorial, cute look! I to worked for Conde Nast so we have some things in common.
I’m trying this tonight! I’m not too hopeful since I still don’t know how to French braid, but we’ll see. I was telling a friend of mine today that your blog helps me be better at being a girl. Seriously. Your tips are freakin’ awsesome.
I’ve loved this hairstyle for a while, but thin hair just can’t really pull it off. Lucky you
http://life-as-rachel.blogspot.com/
love it! Only thick hair can pull this off though, you are right
Awesome tutorial. My hair is pretty thick too. I normally do a front headband-ish braid to get my hair out of my face, but once it get’s past my shoulders I’m totally trying this too!
http://jaclynclaire.wordpress.com
What a great updo. I love it becuase you can dress it up or dress it down. My hair isn’t that long yet, but i think I am going to try and come up with a litttle twist so I can achieve something similar with my shoulder length hair. Thank you!
i have the same problem of toooo thick hair. i actually noticed your hair done this way in your earlier post and was thinking i should try it since you have super thick hair too. so thanks for the how to!! (and sorry for the rambliness)
Adorable! I will have to give this try as you always have great tutorials!
http://www.hjrcherryblossoms.blogspot.com
Ugh…Emily, you do NOT want thin hair. Trust me. You can’t do anything with it. No curling (it falls down), no half up styles (or you can see your scalp), no clipping up (it’ll just fall out of the clip).
It’s really sad. I would much rather have your hair.
I’ve found my new canoe do! (and/or night out on the town when I have not time to curl or straighten do)! Thank you girl! ox
So glad you posted this tut. When you had it on in another post, I was hoping that you’d do a “how-to”. Its so cute and seems quick to do. I’m trying it next morning.
http://rosemallowandcoke.com
Thanks it’s so beautiful!!!
This is so cute – like a modern milkmaid but way modern
Beautiful! I would change your hair for mine without doubt, mine is thin, thin, thin…
So pretty! I wish I have longer hair :-/
Perfect! So glad that you posted this how-to. It actually looks easier than I thought it would be. I’ll have to give it a try this weekend. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this, I know how you felt as a child, my hair is sooo thick…every new hairdresser is kind enough to point it out too! Totally gonna be trying this. Love your blog by the way

great tutorial..:) I had the same “problem” when I was younger, always wanting thinner hair..and always when I went to the hairdresser they used the razor to make it a lot “less”..:P but now I’m happy about it..still..I just recently cut almost half of it off and soon I might cut more..I want to try out the big thick fringe..:) and if I had really thin hair I might not be able to do that either:P

I can totally relate to the pain of having thick hair when you’re a little girl! Yes, we sound like those girls who complain about being too pretty and being discriminated against. But. I’m not one of those girls who can just throw it up in a bun with one elastic. No… it’s a web of pins up there! I have painful memories of painstaking updos for ballet! When my hair is long enough, this is going to be perfect! Two months away, maybe? Thank you so much for this tutorial, gal!
This is so fabulous!
I just tried it but can’t decide if it looks bohemian-chic or like Martha Washington. Hmm. Try again?

I did this for my High school ball, and everyone said they loved it. It looks really good.
There are so many ways to do your hair. I really quite like this way. It is very unique and one that I haven’t seen that is “over used”. I also really like the idea of pulling out a few strands so that it doesn’t look too perfect. Great idea.
soo cute
Ooooh que c’est beau, en plus c’est hyper facile
