How To: Bookshelves

October 19th, 2010

Bookshelves are one of the most underrated spaces in a home, but when done right, can make a huge impact.  Our new place has two big built-in bookshelves and I’ve been organizing and rearranging since we moved in.  While I’m still far from being finished, here are a few of the things that help make the space feel personal, unique and functional.

Use bookends.  They help break up the space and these particular ones I found these at the flea market feel so dramatic.

Group similar items together.  It may seem obvious, but it’s not always something I’ve done and it makes it so much easier when you’re looking for something, not to mention more aesthetically pleasing.

Don’t be afraid to showcase nontraditional items.  Instead of hiding board games in a closet, I keep them out for a fun, playful vibe.

Embrace things that aren’t perfect.  I would never trade in my battered copy of The Catcher in the Rye and choose to keep it on display, alongside books that remind me of my childhood.

This is so perfect! I organized my bookshelf very similarly to this when I moved into my new apartment a few months ago and then the other day, I re-arranged it, but I feel like it’s more boring now. I am going to re-arrange it all over again.

Old books – Yes. A bookshelf is just not complete without them. Really liking your bookends. Love the way you’ve made your bookshelf look so inviting.

Very nice. I was uber excited to see Filth by Irvine Welsh. I’ve read all his books, starting with Filth. I didn’t sleep for days trying to finish it. Great book. It might be time to re-read it. All his covers are like pop art!

Hats off to you! These bookcases look just awesome. There is nothing I don’t like about them, they are simply perfect, seriously. To me, bookcases are a very, very important part of a home, nothing reflect the personality and interests of the homeowners as those do. So why not to make them look nice?

Haha, I read Catcher in the Rye when I was 9. Not a good read for a little kid! I don’t think I had ever even heard the word, ‘goddamit’ until that book. Ha ha. Have you read “Franny and Zooey”? That’s my favorite book by him. Not as popular, but just as good (even better) in my opinion.

I love your blog! I have just found it through Google, but you’re in my favorites now!

My boyfriend and I just bought a house and we discussed having a large bookshelf. I was definitely inspired by your bookshelf! Yesterday I bought two sets of bookends online to go with the antique/classy theme of our room :)

Are you sure that’s your copy of Catcher in the Rye? It’s condition looks suspiciously like mine. Built-in bookshelves are such a blessing.

  • Emily

You should consider painting the wall spaces between the shelves. It is such an amazing, dramatic look, especially if you do most of them the same color then throw in a random pop of color.

  • Kate

I love how the books are all not straight like at a library– so boring! Love how it’s like a modern bookshelf– you know what i mean?!! Love this! Thanks, Emily!

You know a post is good, when it causes you to re-paint your book shelves and sort through 200 books.

This is just beautiful! I’m just starting out on decorating my first home now, and your bookshelves advice is spot on.

FYI, the first image in this post is a dead link. :( Too bad, as I suspect it was a zoomed-out shout of the whole bookshelf ensemble!
