How To: Beachy Waves

June 2nd, 2009

A few weeks ago, I posted this make-up tutorial and received follow-up requests for a lesson on how to create loose waves.   I’ve heard about a million different ways to curl your hair, but this five-step process has proven to work the best.

Love love love your hair :)
    I need to get a curling iron… maybe I have it God-knows-where.

  • http://rhert51519.blogspot.com Rachel

This was EXACTLY what I was looking for! I got your link off Victoria Hart’s blog and I’ve been trying to find a good curling iron and a how to for ages. Thanks so much!

I was also wondering what 1.5 hot tools curling iron is the best? They have about 6 different lines and I’m not sure what the difference is…

  • Anushka

Emily, this tutorial helped me more than any other wavy hair how-to I’ve ever watched! Thanks so much for giving me the perfect waves I always wanted :)

  • janice

Great tutorial! I have the same curling iron. FYI you can take the clamp off. Remove the metal rest from the iron, it takes a little elbow grease, but not too difficult. Take a screwdriver and unscrew the screws from each side of the clamp and remove. Now unscrew the screw that holds the spring in place. You can put the metal rest back on by putting the two screws on the side back on and snapping the rest back in place. Viola!! You life is a little more simpler!!

Love this! My hair is so thick that nothing ever seems to work. I have a curling rod (no clamp – just a hot rod) and I will try this with my hair again using smaller sections.

It worked!!! I feel like I’ve finally been let in on the secret to beautiful waves – it’s how you hold the iron! Thanks for the “how-to”! I just started reading your blog – LOVE IT!!!!

  • http://www.sarahwj.wordpress.com Sarah

Just discovered this…trying it this morning!

  • http://www.hippyhappytink.blogspot.com Terri-Leigh

I have been dying to know how to do this!

Thanks for the simple steps, can’t wait to give it a go!

    I know some of my own readers will want to know to;

that’s why I put this up on my page with a link to yours!

    Ta!

I actually roll the hair around the iron in the opposite direction with each sections… towards face, away from face, towards face, away from face (make sense?). It helps to get that more “naturally wavy” look and prevents on monotonous wave that goes around the head… I hate that :P

  • Susanna

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for this how-to on beachy waves. I have literally tried every how-to on the internet and this finally gave me the outcome I was after. Thanks so much!

    Hi Emily!

A short note to tell you I shared this post of yours on my blog – http://www.dailylooks.com/wavy-dilemma/

    Love your hair.

  • http://www.magpieandmuttonfly.com Amy

Oh, I’m so excited to try this–thank you so!

  • Holly

I do this… but I keep the clamp down and just wrap around the whole curling iron… will it make a difference holding the clamp open?

First time visiting… and I Love it!!

  • http://www.ladylamode.wordpress.com beka

I luv this but its kinda hard to do when your hair is naturally curly, and when u straighten it and do this it doesn’t hold:(

  • Julz

This works great – they make an iron rod now for this technique. no clamp and a heat safe glove to protect you fingers.

  • Lacey

My hair DOES NOT hold curl unless I DOUSE it in hairspray and other product-which doesn’t give it the beachy look-and looks awful the next day. Any suggestions?

great tip for not using the curling wand clamp! much more natural and avoids those “bridesmaids” curls

  • http://cinemacyd.blog.com Cyd

You seriously need to do more how-to`s…preferably on hair.

  • http://www.littleredpurse.blogspot.com Leah

I wanted to let you know that I tried this out this weekend and it looked great. I got so many compliments. Thanks for the tip!

Have you heard of the Sultra bombshell curling iron? It supposedly is amazing for creating waves like this, but it has a pretty steep price tag.

  • http://drycfc.blogspot.com derya

what is the brand of hair maker

  • http://brownonrice.wordpress.com Ethel

I wanted to share that you can actually take apart the clampy thing and it’s so much better! It’s just the barrel like the ones they sell for a ridic expensive amount. Just an fyi. =)

  • ym

hi can i know what size curler u using? 28mm or 32??

  • http://ckavalis@gmail.com Christina

If you don’t have naturally straight hair should you curl your hair after you let it dry naturally or should you iron your hair first and then curl it? Your hair is beautiful by the way!

I used this tutorial the other day and everyone commented on my hair! Thanks so much!

I actually just tried this. Worked realllly well, results were a little different of course but all in all still the same. Looks adorable.

  • Lauren

I’m going to be honest. I was skeptical if this would work or not when I tried it. For months I’ve been trying different ways to curl my hair and every time it just doesn’t turn out right. I tried your tutorial last night and IT WORKED! Like a charm! I loved how my hair looked, and my hair is impossible to curl. Thank you so much!

  • athena

loved it i’m doing it all the time! thank you sooo much! Kisses from Athens, Greece !

  • http://www.sexsellsinc.com Fashion Man

Fantastic color. I’m usually a fan of darker hair on women but I really like your color.

  • http://www.cosmicnoodles.blogspot.com Stephanie M Andrews

Thank you thank you thank you!

I have poker straight hair, and am constantly griping about how I can never have wavy/curly hair – but this technique works!

And it holds! And I’m soooo freaking excited!!!

You are a hair angel ;)

  • http://www.houseofglambeauty.com Christine

Great how-to!! Glammies everywhere thank you :)

  • potop

yo, your nose is to big! my advice would not to pose from the profile anymore! I should probably do a how to on that.
    good luck with your waves!

  • Arden

I LOVE your nose! I just found your site for the first time today (through your Apt Therapy feature – congrats), and in all your photos was thinking that it’s b/c your nose isn’t a tiny plastic surgery nose that you have a look that makes you stand out from all the other pretty (but more boring looking) blondes.

Aaaaaanyway, my reason for posting is to ask if you can do a “how to” for your hair color. It’s really great! I imagine a pro does it for you, but maybe they would collaborate and reveal the shade for the base, etc.

LOVE your site – great inspiration (and now I want CHEESE STICKS!!) :)

  • http://lellaboutique.blogspot.com Vanessa

I do this using a straightener and it works surprisingly well! Such a great look!

  • Kelly

thanks for the tip… ive been trying to master the beach sexy hair for years now but im trying it tonight

  • colleen

thank you! tried it tonight, came out great…

  • Julie

I have an extra curling iron I’ve been using for this. My hand would tired from holding the clamp open, so I removed it! Now I can do the whole process much faster.

  • texasgirl

VERY NICE! i “liked” it but i “love” it lol

  • shana

    Completely excellent job!!!

  • Jiya

The make-up tutorial sounds great and i wanna give a try for it.. This is the first time i visit your site and i had a good time too… The love your style and beauty…
